For many years, I've been utilizing tropical houseplants as an essential element within my aquariums, paludariums, and ripariums. Doing so has allowed me to streamline my process and maintain these setups more easily. That’s because of the many benefits that plants provide. They make it possible to spread out maintenance sessions significantly.
Believe it or not, it’s straightforward to do with the correct information! I’ve experimented with various techniques and plants over the years, many of which I share in this video. I can confidently say that it’s easier to care for setups that have riparian houseplants. Riparian houseplants are also more manageable than their regular potted counterparts.
This guide thoroughly explains why these plants are beneficial, how the work in nature, and how you can incorporate them into your nature designs.

I always love when things work out like that. Good luck on your project, Hope it turns out how you hope it to! Tanner has inspired me to do all sorts of stuff over the time I've been watching him. I found him from aquariums but he has sent me on an adventure learning and setting up all the other "ariums" and it's been great fun

@DanJT10if you have a chance to get green neons instead of or even both of them that you should. IME through the years , health issues are hot the only reason green neons are my favorite ....they have better schooling tendencies, providing that you have 12 + but the minimum is 6 + !!! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

It is so great that you added information about plant toxicity. I have cats, and it’s important to make sure that I use non-toxic plants. I’ve been using a variety of Calathea. Not sure if you are interested in adding additional information about hardiness (or if you have the same experience as I have). But I’ve found the rattlesnake calthea to be more hardy than others, and less likely to drop leaves into the water (where they melt). Great episode!!! I love that you included options for different “planting methods”! Thanks so much!!!
@juliemill22
@juliemill22 4 месяца назад
What do you mean when you say the leaves "melt"? I noticed that was said in the video and my thought was that the leaves decay, but will that negatively affect the tank? Is it very bad for this to happen, or is it just something that would be good to avoid if you can? Thank you! :)
@capuchinosofia4771
@capuchinosofia4771 4 месяца назад
@@juliemill22 the decaying leaves will rot (melt) in the water and leech all the "bad stuff" thats usually removed by plant or waterchanges. When a leaf or more melts, then, it leeches a lot of that bad stuff and the spike in those can be bad for the fishes in the tank
@juliemill22
@juliemill22 4 месяца назад
@@capuchinosofia4771 oh ok, so it’s like it puts the bad stuff back in the water that the plants are meant to take out? That makes sense, thank you!

I'm just annoyed that he strictly speaking is following an incorrect (but often used) definition of vivarium. Using the wrong definition doesn't make it easier to understand when you then run into a situation where people does use the terms correctly.

Resources like that plant list that are Tanner-curated will help make a LOT of us feel more confident in our choices; thank you for that! Video is timely too; I have been keeping turtles and have been learning the hard way that you really can't use plants that don't grow vertically if you actually want to keep them. My plan B was an over-under bog filter in a separate bucket with the bottom stuffed with hornwort and pothos rooting down into it to keep the turts away from them, but the pothos is getting a bit much to manage and it's time to make some better decisions on plant stock.

if you're using the hang on planters, instead of using lava rock or sponge , use marbles. this will hold the plant up where you want it and if you wish to remove the plant, the roots slide easily out of the marbles...unlike lava or sponge.

This video has been a blessing, honestly. I got a lovely white fantail goldfish (hes about the size of a house key, fins included) maybe a month ago and he's been growing up in a 10 gal with two mystery snails while I set up his new home, a 29 gal complete with driftwood, river stones, and the dirt-in-mesh idea you've shown in previous videos to avoid messy substrate. I have a ton of plants too, both aquatic and above water that I'm so excited to use. And today I got my beloved fish a new buddy, a gorgeous black oranda goldfish. He's setup in a bucket right now, but in about 2-4 weeks the two of them will be introduced to their new aquarium to thrive for the next few years.

Tanner, watching this made me realize-we are potentially watching history in the making with you. Scratch that, I think we are… You’re like, the modern-day/younger & American version of Amano, like in your own style! But you’ve also expanded beyond aquarium and aquascaping design and show us many techniques for keeping bioactive systems, reptiles, amphibians, inverts, all with mosses, and terrestrial and epiphytic plants. I could see you opening a school or something one day because this video and others you’ve made show how streamlined you’ve gotten this process! 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
