Hi Lars, gave it a try and after much coaxing my mother-inlaw touched the water, now she is gone but the pipes are thawed. 2 birds with 1 stone, only I now need a good lawyer.

Hello from Michigan USA! I've seen a welder used to thaw copper pipe before when I was a kid. My basement is built so that enough warmth from the ground comes through to keep my pump and pipes from freezing up. I've also used electric heat tape and insulation when I lived in a trailer. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance.

Oddly enough, I have heard of both of these ways of doing it, but never actually seen them (welder or electrical drain snake) used. I know if you remove either side of the line, and hook up only one side (say the common, doesn't matter), then attach it to a car antenna...you make a worm rod (for catching worms for fishing). They pop right up out of the ground. Nightcrawler shopping.

Over sheathed and insulated home electrical wire is refered to as Romex. Non braided= solid copper wire. Run thru a circuit breaker. Great improvised drain snake heater... Maybe a ceramic shield with a space over the "heater" would work.....but I too would just stay away from any metal pipe with it. ⚡ Best Wishes Lars..🤠

Wish I could say I thought this would be useful, but I live in a rain forest and drains don't freeze here. my neighbours pressure lines froze this week as they were shamefully installed. a hair dryer fixed that. denial works most of the time here. Very cool idea though thanks Lars.

A plumber friend told me years ago that he hooked up an Arc Welder to old Galvanized water line under a house & said the pipes were glowing red, he said bad idea for copper as it would melt the solder. I point my kerosene heater at my crawl space and pipes thaw quickly... thx Lars, great tip !

Lars, we call it ROMEX wire. 15 amp wire is 14 gauge, 20 amps 12 gauge and so forth. We have for example 12/2 with a ground so that’s 12 guage wire, a black is hot, white is neutral, bare wire is ground.

Lars wouldn't a handful of salt mixed with the water help conduct the electric current better thus heating it up faster? Just a thought! I believe the frost line in the ground were I live in Kentucky is about 32 inches deep so we have to bury our water pipes to at least that level underground to keep them from freezing then of course the lines above that have to be provided with some kind of heat source or insulation or both! I assume the frostline were you're at goes deeper or it's permafrost "froze all the time" at a certain depth.. Russian ingenuity never ceases to amaze me! Cool fix👍

I did not see any videos of the building of your new home since you made the foundation. It is looking good. As for your improvised pipe defroster, could you not put electricians tape over the coils, of course allowing space for water to enter, but insulating them from copper pipe, to use in metal pipes?

I had an exposed p-trap for a bathtub that froze up once. To get it unplugged I used a funnel and some plastic hose attached to the funnel. I put the hose down the drain and poured boiling water into the funnel. The hose guided the hot water straight to the ice blockage and melted it away very quickly.

Maybe give a little warning on the bubbles being created consists of hydrogen and oxygen which will make for a boom and/or fire if ignited by say .. an electrical spark !

I said in the video that you should NOT do this with metal pipes. It will short circuit the two windings.

Without earth or proper ground it can sting the user. The defrosting/heat part is coming from the fact you are basically making a short circuit.

Another great idea from Survivor Russia thanks. I bet if you added a little salt to that water it would speed up the process! A friend of mine has an old electric machine that you hook onto both ends of a metal pipe and turn the dial and it electrifies the pipe like a heating element and melts out the ice but it's not terribly safe and it emits an evil Buzz..

Good advice for most folks Lars, not me. I used to make these in prison years ago to boil the water in my cell. 2 matches, 2 razor blades, and 2 bed springs. Plug it in boil the kettle. 🤣 Mind you if a person does not know what the hell they are doing? That could be a 1 way ticket to a morgue. Take care, stay safe, and warm.

Noice, thought and question :) if you want to use in a metal tube can you use a wider rigid pipe/sleave as a collar over the exposed wire (still letting water inside)?. How do you plug the hole in the tube you shown to stop water leaking back through later?

No, it's a proto-type we made ourselves for our own SR brand :) It's solid. So far it have made it +1 year being used by me, a lot!

What do you think it's drawing? Have you measured with a clamp ammeter? I'm curious because 32 amps like you said is much more than it would use, But it would be based on the capacity of the wire and the resistance of the water in that 2 cm gap no? Great video though This is good for an emergency situation, Even if it is rather dangerous.

No I have not measured it, but it's much slower than a electric "kettle." They boil the same amount of water faster. The 32 amp breaker was the only one I had which is not in use. I would guess it draws 2-5 amps or so. The breaker is just there in case of short circuit. I of course have other breakers "behind" that setup.

I guess it's the brown "Cosmoline: stuff? I just boiled water in my mess kit, in order to get it out. Try and use some steel wool /Scotch Brite and dish washing liquid. Scrub and boil water in it. If does not help, then repeat and/or try to boil some tea in as well. The acid in the tea will help. the Soviets used this stuff on everything! From firearms to canteens lol

There is no way my power company would supply electricity generator to deal with electricity outage. Its not even practical in cities. For isolated dwellings its doable but again where I am, I am sure the power companies have some clause to avoid responsibility.

I have already purchased knives you have shown that were made for me by Native Siberean People. Anyway, this knife is based on an archeological Danish pattern. And I have a DNA test showing that my ancestors were 12% Nordic people.
