Elite clearly hammered the nail in the coffin with Deftones' refusal to be associated with the new "nu metal" genre, which was gaslighted by radio stations that played songs with "screaming vocals" by bands like Limp Bizkit because they were much more willing to be pegged and exploited by the MTV head honchos that dominated their record label. (This will all count towards 60% of your final grade in Selling Out 101)
Those live drums would be absolutely deafening. Abe beats the shit out of them. I have partial hearing loss from rehearsing with our drummer and she didn't hit half as hard.
Chino needed help. You can see it in how he sings in the first bars. They even say one more time, and he is tired. He's having to throw himself at it instead of just being heard by the mic. Jesus. Love him. You can't scream like this for years and be okay. He needed the sm57 or whatever microphone jobbie it was called (good for the more spoken or sung bits but for screaming he has to exert more pressure. More throat breaking. Poor guy because the mic has less bass basically cos it's an all rounder) and something with more power for the screaming parts. He wore himself and his voice out and had to slow it down. He stops half way here because he can't sustain it all the time it's killing him and no one's telling him. Chino and Abe
That's what I was thinking, I noticed him saying 1 more time. I wasn't thinking abt the mic but I remember in a interview chino said he would push himself
Seriously, that's their spot in Sactown California. Now I know why Zack Hill would make music with these guys a lot before Death Grips. There's a fuckig legit skate ramp in there.
This video is the first time I heard elite from them this was early 2000s and i heard it online , so eventually I heard the studio version and ever since then this has been my favorite deftones song. I havent seen this video since then and I've looked for it couldnt find it until just now , that's cool lol
I think Abe's a better drummer than he gets credit for. A buddy of mine describes him as "generic," and that's not really fair. His beats are basic, but they've got a lot of intensity and strong groove. That said, Deftones is much more than the sum of its parts.
eriel oct he's much like Dave Grohl, simple and never really does anything too complex for the song but it's really effective and creates some very memorable drum beats (I.E. Scentless Apprentice for Dave and Digital Bath for Abe)
Everything you guys are saying is wrong lol. His beats are extremely linear and complex, they hardly repeat the exact same way and swing immensely within his fucking POUNDING dynamics. If your friend doesn’t appreciate his drumming then he simply doesn’t know what he’s talking about lol
People lump them into the nu metal category but that's a crock of shit. The Deftones have such a unique sound that it's hard to categorize them. But, if I had to, I'd label them as alternative metal since they fuse so many types of rock/metal together.
THIS is the Deftones I fell in love with. All the way back to Adrenalin. Crushing riffs, awesome drums, killer screaming/singing. What the hell happened. The new album was on of the biggest disappointments to me. They had seemed to be evolving into an absolute machine. Then we get what is basically another Team Sleep record. UGH
I've got some friends that do well to listen to these lyrics: YOU LIKE ATTENTION. IT PROVES TO YOU YOU'RE ALIVE. STOP PARADING YOUR ANGLES.... YOU'RE INTO DEPRESSION. COS IT MATCHES YOUR EYES. There. I feel better now.
know what...about a week ago...while taking a shit...i've noticed that the hook thingy at my Dickies worker twill pants was labeled ELITE...now i know where they got the title of this song...DEFTONES 4EVA!
kidkenobi i have seen deftones 7 times in concert and they have never played that song live i was just saying i like listening to it on white pony, and i have seen them a handful of times and they have never played that song live i wish they would it kicks ass when ur ripe you'll bleed out of control it gets me amped every time i hear it.
It definitely takes a toll on your throat, and voice, by singing like that song after song for a whole set, and afterward it hurts. But after practice you can find out to achieve the same effect without doing nearly as MUCH damage. So yeah it tears your voice up over time, but no as much as if you were, say, screaming at somebody when you're pissed for an hour or so, and you're all hoarse afterward and can barely talk. You don't lose your voice nearly as quickly when doing what Chino does.
Although it did have an effect, it was only 1 of 1000000 events which shaped their lives to make them who they are, so they could bring their own elements and create this nice music. It also took them a lot of fuckin hard work punk
Halusky is right the drums are quite simple not sure about the other instruments though I mainly play drums lol, but nah Deftones are really good but I think he just meant the sound is simple musically for this particular song. The vocals are killer though!
