This period of Deftones is the sexiest heavy music ever made and, oh yeah, Rodleen Getsic vocals are amazing. Perfect counterpart to Chinos effortless voice.

Deftones "You've Seen the Butcher" from Diamond Eyes (2010)

The beat here is in 4/4. What makes it sound so cool is he's displacing the rhythm. In other words, the snare hits (the ones that cut through the mix) that would usually fall flat on the 2 and 4 are being shifted behind the beat. So if you were to count each bar as follows, the snare hits fall on the ALL CAPS letters instead of directly on 2 and 4 like they would in a standard beat: one-ee-and-uh-two-ee-AND-uh-three-ee-and-uh-four-EE-and-uh Hope that makes at least a little sense haha

This is a fan video made up of clips from several others. This is definitely a grower. It's become my favorite track of theirs over the years. As far as the new album goes, I guess I'd suggest Pompeji or Radiant City.

You mentioned Tool in the vid here- did you hear that Maynard had Covid back in March? He's only just started talking about it. It totally fucked him up - and he is still going through daily aftershocks from it. Heavy coughing, and lung issues. I had no idea, but Jaysus, it shows how different this ting can effect you. I hope Deftones/Gojira goes ahead In Dublin nxt year, but to be honest, Im not countin' on it. Im first in line getting tickets if tings look up for gigs in general, but again, we will see.

Abe Cunningham does create beats that are often off beat. But what sets Abe apart for me is the tone of his drum kit. It’s quite unique

The fact that you talk about the drums so much makes me so happy. Abe is such a phenomenal drummer. He has such a perfect way of laying down a very solid beat (be in the pocket), but put in little fills, snare rolls, cymbal accents that just build the song up so much. The drum tones on this album are perfect. You can actually tune drums, and the snare and kick are just so punchy and solid, they just hook you into the beat and help hold you there the whole time. That "unique" feel you get from his drumming is that he keeps away from your typical "2+4" snare hit drum beat. Great video!!!

I like the new Deftons album, of course I had to listen to it many times to understand what they trying to convey to listeners, by the way, i recently found a similar band in sound, brought me back to 2000s, which is somewhat similar to the old Deftons - Rock & Roll Queen - 20x🙌

Abe Cunningham, the drummer, plays the same simple type of pattern. It’s so simple but yet something about it gets you going. He’s the reason I picked up the drums.

My favorite track off White Pony.

Interesting choice with this one, brotha. I love the 90s "shoegaze" alternative rock feel to the main riff. A real hazy, wash of ambient noisy riffage and Chino's whispery, floaty vocals give it a heavy dreamy vibe. New album is good- Im happy with it. "White Pony" is perhaps still their most celebrated as it sweety combines the heavy dreamy noisy riffage, with some electronica , and some crushin' metal themed music ripping tings up. If you liked all this- you are gonna LOVE more Sleep Token!

Brah when I first heard the girls screaming I was hooked hahaha I had never heard anything like that in a Deftones song or in any song for that matter. I heard Knife Party the whole way through probably about a few months ago for the first time. After that this is one of my favorite Deftones songs.

Abe The drummer what he does is he’ll play in 4/4 obviously... but the variations between the kick and the snare are played within a triple subdivision.... it makes it “feel” odd or off timed like it’s a bit fast but it’s actually not

Abe Cunningham's style explained. I think he is one of the top drummers of all time. It kind of sounds like he has a jazz drum background to me.

Nice! I like what you said about the mellow but noisy sound, that concept can be extended into some very extreme but somehow relaxing music. The drums are in regular 4/4 time but the bass/snare pattern is unique so it makes it feel like it's odd-time. If you listen to the cymbal it's just going 1-2-3-4. I'd recommend 'You've Seen The Butcher' for another great Deftones song. And Haken!

The snare is just in groupings of 3. Its a common 4/4 pattern where the snare lands on the upbeats between the count of 2 and 3, then landing again on 4.

the snare is tighter...........................................you can get different thickness skins for your drums so the snare has a thinner and tighter skin and the toms have a thicker skin.......you can also adjust how tight you want your skins as well, so the punchy sound your hearing is a very tight snare skin
