I’m on Invisalign’s right now and have been for a year, so I feel your pain dude lol. The lisp does go away as you get used to them, but every single time you change trays it’s going to feel weird for a bit lol
Good stuff. Comparing Linkin Park to Deftones is like comparing Limp Bizkit to Black Sabbath. Dive into Deftones with more songs from Adrenaline and Around the fur (Like Birthmark and Be Quiet And Drive) and then take in their masterpiece "White Pony" from start to finish.
@@bevrosity say what you want, but Hybrid Theory and Meteora overall are as great as some of the best stuff Deftones has ever released - it's just they both have different approaches to the genre.
@@Jason17300 Before He ruined his vocal cords back in 99-01 his range was crazy good. His screams were stupid good. Even around the self titled era his shit was still there but sadly the drugs and alcohol killed his voice
Samuel Morales Cruz But also, chino was never a trained vocalist, he always just did his own thing to the point where it caused his vocal cords irreparable damage
No they are nothing like Linkin Park. I'm 36 and at 14 this album came out, my brother showed me this video and still, Deftones is my FAV band to this day.
Fredrick Cosma linkin park covered this song live a couple times, and I must say Chester did the screams pretty similar to chino. There's a few videos on RU-vid of it
This album came out 1997 and Linkin Parks first album 2000 so it's pretty close... but Deftones first album dropped 1995 and they had been a band since late 80's/Early 90's. I think many people put them more in the realm of Tool/Rage Against the Machine era, and are also regarded as GOATS. Their later albums become much more progressive and experimental while keeping the core Deftones sound.
More Deftones Gems: 7 Words, Be Quiet And Drive, Knife Prty, Minerva, Beware, Risk, Rosemary, Hearts/Wires... Or just anything from their first eight albums :D
I’d love to see Be Quiet and Drive. Around the Fur and Diamond Eyes have always been my Deftones favorites. It’s difficult to go wrong with any of their category, though.
Yes, young Drew. This voyage has been one to watch. I wish I could go back 20 years to my teens and listen to Tool and Deftones again for the first time. But doing it vicariously through you is nearly as good. Keep it up brother.
Aaah... Good old days. It was 1997 and i was 15 - and the first time i met "drop-D" tuning on the guitar. "What kinda sorcery is this?" i told myself. Good reaction. Thanks.
Such an overlooked album of theirs. Deftones is one band to never follow trends and that album was released in a *very* trendy time for music and it got extremely overlooked. I always wondered if the passing of Chi had any impact on that cycle?
Guys I loved that album when it came out and it spoke to me for sure the music is really cool too much to describe right? so I wont! Really nice batch of songs all the way through there and the drums always on point.
TheDeadStretch I would consider that very likely for later releases of theirs, although he didn’t actually die until 2013, and the accident itself didn’t happen until 2008, both of which were after that record was released
@@connorsmith377 It's just one of those things that seems the band had to sort of "disappear" for them to work through the whole situation and such. I still have some memories of those live update videos of when Chi was in the hospital.
First time I heard this.. late '97. The album Around the Fur had just been out and the band were all over Kerrang magazine, and getting weekly spins on both the late nite MTV rock show, and the 2fm metal show. This, and "Be quiet and Drive, from the same album totally got me into the band. I remember taping this song onto cassette from the radio at the time. The debut album Adrenaline had a much rawer tone and approach. It was this album though , that totally broke them into bigger tings, incorporating a DJ into the band to showcase those cool sound effects you mentioned there. "Around the Fur" is still my favouite album from them, it totally takes me back to that time of my life. A lot of the album is heavy like this, but theres also a cool ambient noise washing into the metallic crunch of guitars. It layers a serious sensitive side soothing tings over and gave the band a very distinctive, different edge to them over other bands of the emerging era at the time- Korn, early Limp Bizkit, etc. The ambient, shoegaze sound they love and use harks back to Irish band, My Bloody Valentine-a big influence on Chino. This particular album, along with the acclaimed follow up, 2000's "White Pony" are brilliant, and ya cant go wrong with them. As for Linken Park, - absolutely, they were an influence on them. Glad you enjoyed the song, lad!
Chino has described his writing style as mostly stream of consciousness and feelings of the moment. He said he wrote these lyrics one day when he was sitting in an apartment or hotel room I forget where and it was really fucking hot and he just wanted the sun to go away. Simple but relatable. I've never worried too much about what Deftones lyrics are actually about; just how they make me feel.
Welcome to early Deftones my man. This and Adrenaline were their best albums, IMO. Adrenaline is fire start to finish. When are you getting to Rishloo? :)
Glad to see more DEFTONES on your channel! Great reaction as well! It’s been well documented through out the years in print and video how LOT’S of bands use DEFTONES as their base sound. Linkin Park chose to simulate DEFTONES sound to make their own. They toured with each other in decades ago and Chino is still buddies with Mike Shinoda. Good videos on RU-vid about Chinos relationship with L.P! 😎
I went to see Deftones in Glasgow, early 2000s, Linkin Park was one of the support bands. So there is definitely a connection there, plus Deftones were one of the main forces in Nu Metal at the time.
The comparison between Linkin Park and this track is apt to an extent. Deftones' earlier material and Hybrid Theory era Linkin Park both fall under the Nu-Metal subgenre. Deftones have a difficult sound to categorize because they consistently change from record to record. I feel that's likely why you were surprised by the discrepancy in material you heard from White Pony and this track.
I love stuff from their later albums alot more, koi no yokan and diamond eyes are by far my favourite albums. Sextape, prince, rosemary, goon squad and what happened to you are absolute tunes.
Glad you enjoyed the heavier side of Deftones. Other tracks along these lines include Around the Fur, MX, Hexagram, and their Grammy-winning track Elite.
That was the first track off of this album. You should role through this album track by track like you did with Tool. You will find yourself appreciating this band like you have Tool.
Saw them live when attending the very first ever annual Knotfest in Iowa (where I'm from) This song live, had the crowd pulsing like crazy, was instantly a major fan after that. Went from respect to love seeing them live.
This was three years before Hybrid Theory came out but both definitely mixed r&b/hip-hop styles with heavy metal riffs and shouts. It was more of an era thing than one directly getting from the other. This will forever be my favorite Deftones song
I bought this album when it went out... And I love Deftones, but never got caught by Linkin Park... So, subjectively, I can't compare both :). But that reminds me OOOLD memories, with that feeling like if it was yesterday, I'm still the same kid more than 20 years later...
Makes perfect sense to link them with LP. Deftones came some time before LP, but the main similarity is the front man being able to crush both the melodic:emotional and power:thrashy. Both are incredibly impressive singers to be able to pull it off. But just from the timeline, it would perfect sense that Chester and LP would’ve been inspired by Chino:Deftones. I saw LP live in London, and Chester’s vocal blew my fucking mind
drew..like i have mentioned before..you are on the right path..deftones rules..after their 2 first raw, agressive albums came their (arguably) masterpiece named "white pony"! you shouls discover that one next!
If you like Deftones heavier side definitely check out "Engine No. 9" and "Elite" Such a great band with lots of different sounds :) And yeah, Deftones came before Linkin Park, so I'd say Linkin Park sound like Deftones haha
You MUST MUST listen to more Deftones. As far as "hard rock" goes....they're #1 for me, with Tool at a close second. And they are definitely a band that aged very very well. Imo, their best albums are albums number 5 6 and 7. How many bands get _better_ around album 5 lol? It's rare. Their later stuff also has a more shoegaze vibe and Chino's vocal melodies get more interesting with each subsequent album. You need more Deftones in your life Drew!! Go down that rabbit hole!
Funny you mention Linkin Park because they covered this song a few times in 2002 and 2003 Live. In fact they even had a demo track titled A.06 which is definitely inspired by this song.
See the thing about Deftones is that they don't really have a set sound. They have a huge range of sound, some quiet chill tracks, some rip the skin off your face tracks, and some super experimental thing. However, deftones is one of those bands that can pretty much do anything and the sound amazing. If you don't believe me check out these tracks: 1. Minerva 2. Swerve City 3. Rosemary 4. Gore 5. Hole in the Earth 6. Needles and Pins 7. Knife Party 8. 7 words 9. MX 10. Entombed 11. Triangles/Pyramids Basically you can put on any Deftones track, I mean any and be amazed but in a different way because no 2 tracks sound alike.
Best pair of headphones I have ever owned, Bowers & Wilkins, B&W puts Beats, Sony, Bose, Skullcandy to shame. You can hear every piece of instrument being played, lyrics are clear to. Highly recommended headphones and surround sound.
Fun fact: Their first album Adrenaline was one of the first cd's I ever owned. Bought it when it came out simply b/c I liked the name of the band lol. (Back then we didn't really have platforms to listen to music first before buying, other than the radio.) Now, over 20 years later they're still one of my favorite bands. You should check out "Back to School (Mini Maggot)", "Minerva", "Bored", "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)", "Around the Fur", or "Diamond Eyes"
I miss when Deftones went hard like this. First song I heard from them was Bored and its fecking heavy, dude goes off on vocals, get chills every time I hear it.
Defotnes is one of those bands that can do multiple genres really well. They have a lot of amazing heavy stuff. I suggest Korea off of White Pony. Heavy as fuck but still beautiful.
Deftones were out before Linkin Park, so yeah, its the other way around. But they got the power to go from ethereal to absolute savage in both the instrumentals and the vocals. "When girls telephone boys" or "Hexagram" are both heavy tracks from their amazing, yet underrated self titled album! Other heavy songs include "Damone" or "Royal", but there are many many more.
Can we give accolades to the 20-ply Vented maple snaredrum from Orange country drums and percussion that Abe Cunningham uses on This song! The snare contributes so much to the rawness of the song! RIP Chi 🙏🏼
