To be fair, there is a groove to their stuff that has a lot more in common with hip hop than most rock bands. You could easily imagine someone rapping over the instrumental to Change, for example.

I've seen these guys a hand full of times live. I remember seeing these dudes for the first time back in 1996. Down in South Florida, Broward County in some dinky little rock club. Forgot the name of the club, but it was small, cramped, hot & sweety, but everyone EVERYONE was head bobbing & grooving. Best D-tones show for me by far. Bless up Chi!!! That dude played a solid bass man.

Chino Moreno may hold the starpower within deftones but Abe Cunnintham is the most talented member of the group when it comes to handling his instrument.

They get lumped in with the Nu-Metal crowd because of who they toured with, which is a shame, because they pretty much invented mathcore, and have always been legit.

Deftones and Tool are too bands that bridge the gap between the metal world.

(definitely not bragging)...was in a few local bands back in the day and met my handful of "rockstars", and I had the true blessing of being able to hang out with Chi 4 or 5 times...honestly the most down to earth and sweet musicians, if not human beings, I have ever met. Still think of him to this day.

I don't think it's correct that metalheads shunned Nu-metal because it wasn't 'pure'. Nu-metal was just flat out awful. And they looked like idiots too. Deftones are the only band who got the mix of groove and heaviness just right, without it sounding cheesy. At the time I thought Limp Bizkit, Korn etc were absolute shite. And still do, and now sound horribly dated. But Deftones were something special and it's sad they got lumped in with that atrocious metal genre.

Flappy Terryfolds they definitely got unfairly lumped in. They’re more of an alternative post-hardcore band to me.

Unfortunately everything needs a label and Alternative Metal is the label they got stuck with. There’s a lot of elements at work in their music.

Seen Deftones 8 times... I got drunk one show on my birthday weekend at the Orlando HOB and was right in front of Chi Cheng. Everyone was yelling Chino so every time it got quiet I would yell, Chi Cheng in the motherfuckin house! He kept pointing at me and smiling with his perfectly crooked teeth. I had no idea that would be the last time I would ever be able to see him play live again. What an awesome memory, bass players don’t get enough love. Rest in paradise.

I was going to say, people new to metal think bands like Korn, slipknot, and deftones are poser metal bands, but people who have been around have nothing but the utmost respect for those pioneers.

@@lukehewko260 I disagree in the 90's Slipknot, Korn, Deftones were all pushed away to "numetal" because the gatekeeping metal heads of those days didnt feel they belonged with regular metal. Opinions changed as these bands continued to put out hits and now they're respected by most metal heads.

Ive noticed 3 types of deftones fans. 45% think white pony is the best album, 45% think around the fur is the best album, and 10% think adrenaline is the best album. for me its white pony but around the fur is not too far behind.

@@JungleScene White Pony in terms of just overall quality and production. Around the fur for me because it was the first deftones album I bought back in the day. I can stil remember driving around with my friends listening to it in the late 90s.

Absolutely. My Deftones listening increasingly trailed off on their later stuff. These two albums were amazing.

I specifically remember being embarrassed at a party in the 90's cuz I thought they were called "Death tones". Lol.

agreed on the drum sounds. the drummer is incredible but the sound engineering is always top notch too. The producer on this album was the great Terry Date, who also has produced for Pantera, Soundgarden, incubus, Ozzy, Korn, Smashing Pumpkins.... Terry Date has his fingerprints all over 90s rock and metal.

Even as a diehard Deftones fan I have to admit that gore took me a while to get into
