@@jamelakajamal 😂 that's how some of their songs are...if you listen to 'Passenger' for the 1st time it sounds like something epic, but he's just singing bout riding in a car
this was written in Seattle during the hot summer of 1994. Trapped inside of his room by the heat and sun, Chino Moreno boarded up his windows with aluminum foil and wished for "An apocalyptic-type thing" where all of the people on the streets would disappear and the sun would go away. He called this dream world "his own summer," which is where the song title comes from.
@@jamelakajamal It's so much fun to watch you do these videos - reminds me of when I first heard this stuff - especially Deftones - and how it just blew my mind. Also, bay area represent.
Accurate description? Umm I suppose it sounds neat to say that, but it doesn’t have any real descriptive meaning. What, they only play songs at night? They suck human blood... metaphorically? For real it’s a terrible description. But funny to think about I suppose?
"For real... WHAT IS THIS?"😂 I love the Deftones so much and I never understood what he was saying. Then I'd read the lyrics and understand it even less. 😄
This song has such an incredible depth. I know there are so many ways to interpret it but here's mine: To me this song is about depression and karma. "The clouds come and shove the sun aside"; how we feel when we are depressed, messed up in life, lost something meaningful. "No sun in my summer" is just a metaphor for being depressed and feeling alone. "Hey you, big star, tell me when it's over" is like looking up at the universe and asking God when will this feeling go away. "I think god is moving it's tongue There's no crowd in the streets And no sun in my own summer" refers to karma (god moving his tongue), and whatever he did has left him all alone and depressed. It's his "own" summer. Everyone is out enjoying the summer, while his is a sad, dark and lonely one without sun. "I try and look up to the sky, but my eyes burn" means he wants to heal/change/get out of the state he's in, but he's just being burned by God and has to wait for the karma to take it's course. "The shade is a tool a device a savior" the shade is a way for him to feel alright - to get away from the burning heat (God's punishment), and in the long run, it's his savior - he must feel remorse and take the time to heal and learn from his mistakes.
well its actually Korn that did that whole Soundtrack. But they got soooo screwed from the director that they couldn't even resell what Jonathan Davis wrote. So a lot of bands got together and did the whole Queen of the damn. which had like Disturbed and many others. but orginally. all songs on Queen of the Damned was all done by Korn. Just sucks they got screwed in the process of the movie.
@@tjohnson2789 It's actually only 1 guy from Korn that did the sound track. Not the entire band. And Sony said no due to contract limitations. Which is why the sound track was then put together by members of various bands including 2 members of Korn, but no one from Korn could do any vocals. Here is the list of people that did the sound track: Jeff Scott Soto was hired to do the vocal work but instead five of Jon's friends from other bands were chosen including Wayne Static of Static-X, David Draiman of Disturbed, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Marilyn Manson, and Jay Gordon of Orgy.[2] Head and Munky from Korn, Sam Rivers of Limp Bizkit, L. Shankar, Vinnie Colaiuta and Terry Bozzio rounded out the studio musicians.
Hey Jamel, Primus and Deftones in one weekend! Hot damn! My wife’s favorite band is Deftones and she just sat through all four reaction vids... we could feel your excitement! You’ve Seen the Butcher Passenger Be Quiet and Drive Just to start... rabbit hole indeed cause these guys have a deep catalog! Looking forward to more!
As a MASSIVE Deftones fan, I think this is a bad song to introduce people to, unless they're already Tool fans. I see it as more of a song for fans of both bands, and not a song to introduce people to the Deftones. You have to have a knowledge of both bands to really appreciate that song.
Cheers to you getting into all my favorite bands this new year. Deftones and Tool (and all dude projects of both singers) have saved n changed my life for the better. Love to see someone enjoying the magic
Some great tunes on all their albums! White Pony of course (Digital Bath, Change, Knife Party,...), Koi no Yokan (Leathers, Tempest,...), Diamond Eyes (Diamond Eyes, Risk, Rocket Skates,...)
Banished From The Dwarf Planet you don’t know shit about drum writing either apparently. Ab’s drums plays counter to Steph guitars while most basic drummers would try to compete, or overplay what the guitarist is doing. It’s this opposing sounds brings interest to a song. It’s really the difference between a great drummer and whoever you think is good.
It was used in the original Matrix movie. Ironically, I just watched your Change in the House of Flies vid. That song was used for the movie Queen of the Damned, which was a vampire movie. Love the react my dude!
Great reaction! Nice job exploring and analyzing of the lyrics. I got the album when it came out. They splashed onto the scene with this big hit. I never have read the lyrics though. I just knew that it rocked.
Deftones my man Jamel! This band has some real gems. Back to School and Be Quiet and Drive are in my opinion songs of our generation in the middle to late nineties. Incredible group of musicians. Thanks again for the top tier content.
Dude, I stumbled across you last night. I got hooked immediately. Off today and have been watching video after video. I love it man. You seem to really enjoy discovering all this music. That's awesome! I'm a metalhead, but I love all kinds and eras of music. Too often we get get caught up in one scene and miss out. Dude keep it up!!😃
My man you are killing me with the vampire talk. The disbelief. Loved it. Yeah when I saw this video title I knew you'd love the beat/riff but find the lyrics as odd as I do
I fucking love Deftones. This was the tune that got me into them. I’m from the Central Valley here in California, they’re from Sacramento, and it gets just as unbearably up there as it does here. So, I can relate to the song a lot! Haha.
I’ve listened to this song for over 20 years and I’ve honestly never paid attention to the lyrics until now. Always just banged my head to the song because it’s one of the best metal jams ever.
this song teleports me back to when I was 15. My friend gave me a mini-disc with a bunch of sick bands, including this song. I listened to this shit non stop for like two weeks.
Your reaction vids are brilliant! I did interview Chino the lead singer a few years ago and part of how he writes lyrics is as a reaction to the music him and the band composed together. Deftones write, produce, and record their musical ideas before he does lyrics and vocals.
Back in the 90s there was some magazine that came with a CD every month. I bought (or rather my dad bought for me) the one at a news stand that had this song on it. Other than this song and Change I don't remember much about them, other than it was back when MTV still played music videos and iirc this one had sharks in it. I would set the VCR to record 120 minutes often times while I slept at night so probably still have an old VHS tape with this on it in a box somewhere. Also I learned how to play this song via tabs in a Guitar Monthly mag. That is my entire experience with this band/song. Have a nice day everyone thank you for reading my comments blog
Chino has a strong skateboarding background, and “shove it” its a skateboarding slang. Man, you are a reaction machine!. Been following you for a couple of days and its good to know how many good music you have reacted to already. I will give you a band’s name that inspired deftones an many others from our generation: PORTISHEAD. There are lots of good songs, but Glorybox live would be my recomendation. Keep it up
Thier on a level all on thier own. No band like them each band member brings a style that no one has or will come close to. They represent what it is to be cool.
I love that you do reaction videos to most genre. I’ve not scrolled through all of your videos but if I may suggest a couple of songs. Number one is Alice In Chains, Love Hate Love live at the Moore(sp?). Brilliant song. And if you do any electronic music, check out Nesatovo by Beats Antique. They’re an electronic group that takes old world music and puts it to a beat. Both very unique in their own rite.
