Defying Expectations: Late Potato Planting Pays Off! | 2023 Fall Potato Harvest
This season in our Wisconsin Zone 5 Garden, we waited longer than we have ever done to plant our fall potatoes, and were afraid that we had waited too long.
Spoiler alert, we got a great result from this fall potato harvest 2023!
The potatoes we planted were store bought potatoes and not certified seed potatoes. We got these red potatoes for .79 cents for a five pound bag, and most had already chitted at the time of purchase. So, essentially, there is little cost that has gone into this planting, and we are so excited to show you this result that took a mere 81 days from the time of planting.
We hope you enjoy this potato harvest video, and are inspired to do your own fall potato planting next season.
Thank you for watching this late potato harvest!

Nice potatoes.🤩 There is a report in 1852 who explain IS possible to plant potatoes Bégin february to novembre in France . I tested that and August potatoes still work. I put them with Jérusalem arkichot and i get out in winter together. Love for all of you from Tours in France❤🇲🇫

Southeast Texas , yes fall potatoes is a must already one month in the grown. You see , me and potatoes have an odd relationship 🤔. I get so excited to find out what's underneath that i endup picked them up way before time 😂😂. I need potato jail for at least a month or so .. 😂😂😂 Nice harvest right there ! 😊

Hey hey from Iowaaaay! I’m so glad you posted that video this summer! I had some seed potatoes that nearly rotted in a bucket, but you inspired me to plant them anyway! I haven’t harvested yet, but I poked my hands in the grow bag yesterday and I’m pretty sure I have potatoes about that size! Interesting about the temperature, so think I will pull them up this weekend -wish me luck! Congrats on your sweet harvest!!

My successful failure. I MAY have pulled up almost as much as I planted…maybe. I know that they didn’t have enough sun and the soil was COLD when I was pulling them out. I probably didn’t water them enough either. So this was a learning experience and planning to do better next year! In the meantime, I think I’ll fry these bad boys up and enjoy my LITTLE harvest :)
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 9 месяцев назад
@DawnBarb but they are fresher than the ones you planted, so a definite win! The watering was a key for us.

I live in Zone 3 Northwest Minnesota and planted some of my purple potatoes after garlic harvest one year (end of July) and harvested them in late October just ahead of garlic planting and I was amazed. They produced a better yield than the early spring planting. I don't plant my potatoes very deep. Most times just below the surface then cover with a good hay mulch. Potatoes typically do much better in a cooler, moist season. Some of my best potato harvest have been in years when it is cold and wet all summer. The variety of reds you have there look like the red Pontiac (my favorite red potato). The red Pontiac are an 80 day potato and average around 2-3 inch diameter and are very uniform in size and shape.

Fantastic! I like to put my little ones whole into beef stew or vegetable soup. Sometimes I take all the little ones and make them into herbed baked potatoes. Again, they are used whole without peeling.

I had extra seed potatoes in my basement that I planted out August 1st. I harvested them a few days ago and was pleasantly surprised with the poundage as wellnas how large some of them are. Huckleberry Gold and Blackberry are the varieties I planted

We live in Wisconsin, zone 5b. I planted 6 seed potatoes in a very large grow bag. It was a purple variety (purple skin and yellow center) in late June. The vines finally died off but were still green (October 17th). NO potatoes at all. Quite disappointed. What did I do wrong? All my other potato vines in four large bins produced 50 lbs. Congrats on your red-skins. I want to try those next year.

I am sorry to hear you didn’t get anything. 🙁 When you say no potatoes do you mean not even really tiny ones that just didn’t develop at all or just roots? I am thinking there are so many things that might have happened but I am wondering about feeding/mix makeup as a start. The fact that you were so successful elsewhere makes it even harder to fully understand. I am also thinking some varieties might struggle more in the short term and maybe the reds we used are more suited to early potato production.

I transplanted about 10 plants to bring indoors. Most are fingerlings a couple are some kind of blue or purple.

Gee you grow a lot of potatoes!! However having said that...I do believe you can grow potatoes all year round!! We are heading into our summer here in Australia and I've got potatoes popping up all over the place!! Boggles the mind cause our summers are brutal!!

And….there will be more harvest videos coming. 😁 we will definitely be growing over the winter too, but indoors. What varieties are you currently growing ?

@@GutenGardeningI have been ordering my food through a local farmer!! and I have been growing ones leftover that have been chitting!! So as for variety I couldn't tell you!! The problem with local farmers is that I think they have been stunting the growth of their potatoes!! Been taking them a lot longer too germinate!! But yeah sorry I couldn't tell you about the varities!!
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 9 месяцев назад
@uppanadam I wonder if they spray to keep them from chitting. We have seen ones we have grown from the store take a lot longer but eventually they seem to still chit as you said. Well, variety doesn’t matter if they grow for you and are delicious! :)
@uppanadam
@uppanadam 9 месяцев назад
@@GutenGardening They do chit!! Just the weirdest thing is they take three months too sprout!! And I know i've had potatoes spout like in a week!! So I don't know what's up with that??

You mentioned a nutrient soak you use before planting your potatoes. Do you have a link to this? I am always looking for tips to use in my garden.

How many lbs came from your 5 lb experiment?
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 9 месяцев назад
We actually only planted about 2.5 lbs in this bed (though each bag we purchased contained 5 lbs). The resulting harvest was 7.5 pounds, or about a 3x yield. Which, given how late we planted l, we are very pleased with.
