Planting Potatoes in June for a Late Fall 2nd Harvest 

too funny! "it thinks we're still gonna eat it." this might be some artificial intelligence happening!!!

Currently letting some store bought potatoes grow in a dark cabinet because there were no seed potatoes anywhere. I did find out the organic ones work best for this due to the fact they aren't sprayed with inhibitors.

The store bought ones are sprayed with a sprout inhibitor called sprout nip. So if you want to sprout them try adding warmth and humidity and keep it dark.

I think if you take a little dirt from your garden and rub it all over 1 potato from the store and had a 2nd as a control that you didnt rub dirt on, you would find that the dirty tater would sprout faster.

Would this still work in areas that the ground freezes, like Canada. Our ground freezers down about 4 feet where I am.

In Zone 5. on 3rd season of some potatoes left to over winter in the ground. Comes back no problem. I was surprised.

That's what I do. In my country the variety of the potato is listed on the back of the bag so I can even find the specific kinds I want. I can also have a bigger selection in my garden because I can buy smaller quantities. Now I have some left over from the previous year that starts sprouting in spring so I use them and only buy new ones if I want to try a new variety.

Aldi's potatoes sprout really fast, so that's perfect! I'm glad you said aldi's!

When I first asked my green thumbed aunt about growing potatoes, she asked her husband. He said get a mellon baller and scoop the eyes out, plant that and eat the rest. He learned how to grow taters when times were hard. That generation can grow anything!!!!

I heard you shouldnt plant sprouted potatoes from the store because they have pesticides on them. Thats why you should buy seed potatoes specifically for growing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, me neither so I use vases, planters and other containers. It's not the same as having a garden but rather satisfying. Give it a try! 😉

Hill or earthing up is kind of old fashioned. It means you plant them shallow so don't have much trouble digging them up.I plant in containers now,very deep and also bury containers in ground.Nothing more to do until harvest. Then just pull whole container up and tip contents in barrow and search for potatoes. Put spent soil/compost in hole and plant garlic. Minimum 5kg or 12 lbs per bucket. Iv'e had 15kg from one. Almost a bit too easy. :)

Check out "HomeGrownVeg" RU-vid channel. He experiments a lot with containers, and has successfully planted store bought potatoes that grew "chits" (eyes) in 10 inch containers that yield him over a pound of potatoes 10-20 weeks later. He's got a great accent, too, lol

@@joanncreekmore4067 Depends on variety. Usually two potatoes for 30l for main harvest. Four for earlies. You have to guess a bit when to harvest. Later the better.

haahaha thats pretty funny!! to me at least-- & probably bc it's so relatable!! lol that truly all sounds very much like my yard & the countless oddities I've uncovered over here throughout the years😂😂😂 -- so much of which remains a mystery to this day . . . . 🌌🛸☄️✨️🔮...haha. this year's findings, while diggin' that earth: •two sneakers (&Nope-- they were Not matching sneakers. ha ha ha!) •lots of rope •lots of glass (of course...classic) •lots of pieces of wrappers of some sort? (think: candy wrappers) •a pretty neat lil eagle- shaped silver pin annnnnd 1 honorable mention, my #1 favorite find (so far)//pride & joy: •an absolutely stunning piece of fossilized/ "petrified" wood. !!! yeahhhh babyyy !!! it's honestly a pretty nice sized piece, too.. *this particular treasure was not from this year, though. i actually found it about 9 years ago or so...when i initially started digging/ cleaningup the yard/setting up garden space after having just moved here. &ever since then, I've hoped to stumble upon another piece, but unfortunately so far no luck. I have to agree, I'm in zone 5b and it's nice to know he's closer by than like, California lol it's so disheartening to try and figure out if you have time for a crop and all the videos are people being like "It's been a super mild winter this year and as you can see my watermelons are just loving it!"

@@kiashaw I asked in a Texas Hill Country group and a few had planted them pretty late. And since these were sprouting in May, nothing to loose. I think I wouldn't spend money and plant until a bit cooler. I do plan on making a video when I decide to harvest.

All you need to do is develop better Time Management skills, get organized, decrease procrastinations and you will be The Director of your own Destiny. To decrease procrastinations, I was taught "Do the Worst thing First" * everyday. The thing you want to put off for later, do it first thing that day and get it out of the way. It works. That's what I do, kind of. I remove the potato eyes with not much potato, and grow those. So I eat my potatos, skin and all, and still get potatos to grow from just the potato eyes. Works for me.

Some plant nurseries give away used garden pots for free. Folks bring the empty pots back to the stores, for reusing or recycling purposes.

I got from the same place too. Mine are chitting, which I saw the definition being the sprouting process of the eyes to decrease time to harvest

I got several varieties from the same place. Planted out mid April. Short season, midseason, and late season. Most are 3 ft tall and blooming.

Paladin Smith I’ve planted 3 king Edward potatoes in my potato experiment pot! Those are my “fall” ones at the moment. Have some Desiree and swift to harvest soon.

They are the fabric containers. I’ve been having great success with this type of gardening since trying it out last summer

Where are you in California? I’m in Rancho Cucamonga (10a) and just planted potatoes at the beginning of the month. Had a hard time finding seed potatoes and then thought I was too late. Good to hear I might not be. Just starting to see some growth poking through the soil. Lucky you with a root cellar. Not sure what to do if we actually get a decent harvest 😳

Always try. Even potato peels grow great potatos.
