Thanks for sharing. Those packages from the store are really dirty and germy, as they have been on the floor, handled by dirty hands, and on the check-out conveyor belt with raw chicken packages, bug spray, cleaners, and other hazards. I never set the packages on my clean food surfaces, unless I have washed them well. Maybe you washed the tray after setting the bag on it, and it got edited out, but just wanted to mention for people who don't realize this. Happy dehydrating!

Great point! I didn't wash the tray, but washed the bag before starting everything else. I agree with you that we never know where bags and other packages have been, and it's a good idea to wash them. I'll make a point of mentioning that in the future.

Chill... The package is meant to handle dirt and grime and all the cocky in the world! The inside is what matters and the inside is still fresh and clean

I found this video today...trying to make room in the freezer....I have 4 of these bags in the freezer. Today's project! Thinking of using a waxed paper or parchment to line my trays
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry Месяц назад
It is a great way to free up space in the freezer, for sure! The only problem with lining the trays is it make take longer to dehydrate, but that is the case if you use the fruit leather trays as well. I hope it turned out well for you!

I'm from the country, and we do a lot of blueberry harvesting in the late summer, very early Fall...what you call "regular" berries are not "normal, authentic" blueberries to me. Wild blueberries naturally grow in the wild, and they're more tasty, in that I mean their flavour is very concentrated and yes, they are definitely smaller. The "regular" blueberries you mentioned don't have even half the taste as wild blueberries. I also find your "regular" blueberries akin to something that's mutant, lol. I've taught my grandchildren the difference between the wild ones and the store bought ones...same with the strawberries that are sold in stores...they're abnormally large, lack the sweet, condensed flavour of wild strawberries... saskatoons...the same thing. I prefer the berries growing in the wild and so do my children and grandchildren.

Wild blueberries are the "regular" berries. Cultivated blueberries are larger but less sweet and have far fewer nutrients than wild blues. The wild blues are so full of so many antioxidants and phytochemicals. (That is why they are blue on the inside - all the way through - while cultivated blues are white fleshed.) Best berry on the planet. Cultivated berries are more tart, and though they are also delicious don't compare to many berries in nutrition. Thanks for the great tip about dehydrating from frozen!

Great information! I haven't checked lately, but at least at the time, the wild ones were a bit less expensive. It's unusual for the healthier option to be less expensive, so that's a double win! Have from dehydrating from frozen. It is so much easier, and you can get around to the dehydrating when you have time for it.

I don't have liners for my trays and I'm on a pretty tight budget. Can I just put parchment paper on the trays? I rescued a dehydrator from a dumpster, cleaned it up and it appears to work just fine as I've done onions and green peppers already.

you can cut thin cotton fabric, like old sheets, air can flow and they are washable!

Would you use the fruit trays next time that will probably take even longer but less mess🤗
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry Год назад
No, I think I would do it the same way. As it is, blueberries take a long time to dehydrate. The main thing is to put a fruit leather tray on the bottom, so it can catch all the drips. Another thing is you can let them thaw first, and drain off all of the juice before dehydrating. But even then, I'd put a fruit leather tray on the bottom. The good news is, even though it's messy, the trays washed off easily without scrubbing.

I'm so glad you said this! I was going thru the comments looking for anyone who could mention the frozen berries possibly dripping onto next tray. Because if so, I'd like to catch that run-off hoping to preserve it for later use.

Yes, I suspected that was the case before buying them, but decided to try them anyway. I do think most of the time I will dehydrate the regular blueberries, but these will be good for baking.

Question: I heard with fruit you have to puncture the shins but, but with frozen is it not important to do so? I’m thinking because the when the water freezes it breaks down the skin some but I’m not sure.
@StockingMyPantry
@StockingMyPantry 2 года назад
Hi Jamie, great question! You are absolutely right that it's because they're frozen that you don't have to puncture the skins. That is one of the great benefits to starting with frozen fruit!
