One of my earliest memories is walking with my grandfather through his garden and he would pick a huge ripe tomato, slice it in half, sprinkle a little salt on it and we would eat it. I guess I have loved them ever since.
It is a low end cabellas unit from china. Only good for veggies because they lied and it can't get hot enough to safely process jerky. Going to get an Excalibur someday to replace it. We used to use a small round one and it just took to long. Thanks for watching
Great info as usual. I grew the Principes this season after seeing a prior video from you drying some and how much you liked them... and WOW - they are so flavorful! A very prolific plant, as well. I have yet another batch drying in the dehydrator (after drying a while they smell like chocolate to me- what's not to love ?!) ... and I have to remember to save some of the fresh ones for seeds. Thanks for the upload.
They are a flavorful tomato developed specifically for drying. Try the slices with crazy salt. They have amazing flavor and are very crispy making them easy to chew. Thanks for watching.
I have a food saver and it does the same thing. It takes a long time to seal. I just got finished putting my tomatoes in the dehydrator. Great video, thanks.
I absolutely love these videos about gardening and preserving food. It gives me confidence to try it myself and so far, I’ve been pretty happy with the results. What kind of dehydrater do you have? Mine is a much smaller, round table-top one.
It's the only way to know exactly what you are eating anymore. We started with one like that but it took to long and we got tired of putting up with the constant fan noise. This one is a Cabelas. Works good for veggies but not hot enough to safely process jerky. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for another great video my friend. Hope that you and the misses are doing well, Try an stay cool.( OH! ) careful with some of those moves, in doing your rain dance my man. Speaking from my own experiences. You want to make sure anything that you my throw out to the left or right come back to you and to the right areas that they came from and back into their right positions as well. Ha, Ha, Ha. A few years back I was getting into one of those in our back yard, just having some fun with the misses, just to make her laugh. I truly loved that womans laughter. Nothing would or could make my day more. Anyway throw out the old back. Boy did that bring the dance to a close. Ha, Ha, Ha. After that every now and then she would walk by me on one of our really hot days, every once in a while, when rain had been in short supply and look at me and start to giggle and she would do a little wiggle, not say a word just keep on walking to the back door with that wiggle of hers going on, look out and say, you know we could probably use a good rain dance sweetie, just so to get some water into the garden. Then start back with her little giggle again. At which time I would tell her go get an Indian rain maker honey. My days of rain dancing are over I'm afraid. And she would just breakout into the biggest laughter, which would bring a few on myself as well. We would joke with one another almost all the time back in those days. Well hang in there guys love your videos my man. God Bless.
Thanks. I watch the weather before deciding when to do mine 😲. Looks like the tropical storms may make it up to us in a couple days and I can say that it worked ⛈⛈. Have to have some fun while I still can. Thanks for watching.
Where can I find the dehydrating mats that you are recommending? Love your videos, especially the gardening and cooking ones. Avid watcher for a long time.
I took your advice and tried the vacuum smooth side up and the other mistake I was making is that I had the machine set on moist instead of dry. So glad you told me what I was doing wrong because I bought a large amount of the Armor bags that you had posted. Another question that I had is I'm looking to extend my garden and want the soil light so that the plants don't get pot bound and I see that you put mulch in with yours. Will this help the soil or hurt the plants come spring. Sorry to bother you but you have the best channel and all your video's are truly amazing!!! Thanks for everything Ed!! Maybe a dehydrator will be in my future!! Lol Thanks!
I bought 600 of the bags in assorted sizes and have not had problems so it seemed like something with the settings or having them flipped. I put at least 6 inches of grass clippings around the squash and pumpkins and it will be decomposed by spring and ready to turn in. We use the dehydrator a lot a couple weeks of the year. Just wish that I had bought a better one for making jerky. Thanks for watching.
wow you do such a great job!! Again I am starving lol! How about a tour of your root cellar / food storage area a good video topic !! Thanks for sharing!
When you dehydrate tomato for cooking later do you re -hydrate them first? That looks like such a good idea! I have a Nesco dehydrator and it's round. It does a wonderful job on everything I have tried. Even jerky. I also did buy the small grid lined plastic liners so No problem on the tomatoes. Very interested!
I just bought an Avid Armor and returned it. There's a video about trying to use it but it just didn't work right. This foodsaver is actually much better working then the Avid armor was. I am looking for a good chamber machine for things like sauce. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 That is interesting. I watched your review and could see your problem but mine has never had that issue. I am happy with mine, especially after killing five food savers!
We really like this foodsaver. It is easy to use and seems to have equal vacuum to the avid armor but it is very controllable. The Avid armor was not useable in the pulse mode we use most. I was going to buy one of their chamber sealers also but now am looking for a different brand that doesn't require a good review for the full warranty. From what I an seeing it's worth spending a little more for one big enough to hold pint jars.
Those tomatoes look wonderful. I love your idea about encasing some of the dried tomatoes into epoxy for a tabletop! That would be so unique. I hope you do that. Thanks for all the great info you give us. ❤️❤️❤️ When you said you were going to flash freeze those bell peppers, will you show us the machine that does that, and/or let us watch you flash freeze them. Thanks.
They do come out nice looking this way. I have always wanted to try one of those epoxy river tables and bet the tomatoes would look awesome. Maybe someday start wit a cutting board. Thanks for watching.
Judy Abernathy most people place the food in a single layer on a cookie sheet and put it in a freezer until frozen. Typically overnight will be enough time. Then you can take the food and place it in a vacuum sealer bag and seal it. This helps keep the food from freezing in a big chunk that is hard to thaw and cook. Hope this helps.
awesome job on the tomatoes...I will have to try that way...do you have a video on the peppers? if not can you do one to show us how you flash freeze them and vaccumn pack them for stuffing? loving your garden videios as usually! :-)
I’m not sure I understand why you put them in the bags then take them out again to store? You dryer is fantastic, it would have taken me 2 days to dry in my Excalibur. Thanks for sharing this.
I was told you have to let them equalize a couple hours before vacuum packing. It lets them cool and firm up so damp spots and air pockets can't form like when they are pulled together hot and pliable. This really sucks won't go over 152 deg to safely process jerky that was the reason I purchased it for. Going to get an Excalibur someday. I don't think this will last much longer the way the interior panels are starting to crack.
Has only worked once this year 😬⛈⛈. Hopefully next week the tropical storms will bring some moisture up this far that Iwill take credit for. Thanks for watching .
Do you make tomatoe powder from the skins? I have never tried it. I think the roasted tomatoe skins would have a nice flavor to it. Thank You for Sharing 👍👍😊
Just did a video about the foodsaver and the dehydrator is a Cabelas. I wouldn't buy it again because they misadvertised the temps. Thanks for watching
thanks for making it... I'm in Florida, but from the mountains of PA.. it took a few yrs, but i think i got this FL gardening down, producing,..... crazy days.. to bad the youth don't know the older way's, they will starve, or get shot steeling? lol
Soak them in warm water for a couple hours. I don't recommend any. I have not found a good one yet. Did a recent video about this one. Thanks for watching.
There is one about the pasta dish. The chicken breasts are just stuffed wit a mixture of spinach, tomatoes, and grated mozzarella. I will make a video next time she makes it. Thanks for watching.
It's about 1/2 and even more if you buy foodsaver bags. The time saved makes it worth it for us. Plus I really like the 6 inch wide bags for small items. I save the rolls for items like racks of ribs. Thanks for watching.
We have been doing the halves for years. This is the first time for slices and I like this way best. They retain 100% of the flavor. Principles are a drying tomato that have the best flavor. Thanks for watching.
Cabelas and I wouldn't buy it again. Only good for veggies, doesn't get hot enough to safely process jerky as it was advertised to and I bought it for. Going to replace it someday. Thanks for watching.
Cabelas. It's a cheap Chinese rebranded one that is only good for veggies. I do not recommend it because it doesn't get hot enough to safely process jerky. Going to get a better one someday. Thanks
It's a Cabelas and I would not buy it again. A rebranded cheap Chinese dehydrator that is only good for veggies. Does not get hot enough to safely process jerky like they advertise and I bought it for. Thanks for watching
That is what works best for my dehydrator but everyone is different and you should find what works best for yours by doing several runs at different temperatures.
