I had this same question, but with a solution. D3pro vs smic2s + nicama v2 pro preamp (Amazon). I doubt anyone has used the nicama, but assuming it's decent, this combo would be the same weight and form factor as the d3pro. Is this a crazy idea? I only have the money to buy one shotgun mic for on camera and booming (when I have another person shooting). I figure this is gonna be the best quality audio and best bang for the buck. I think this combo will even work on a small gimbal like the weebill S with my a7iii and Tamron 28-75. What do you think?

Nice video! Do you have any recording tips for using a XLR mic like this when filming run and gun style. Record audio externally or use a XLR adapter on the camera? To get professional quality audio. Cheers!

What camera are you using? GH5 has an XLR hot shoe mount, and there are a variety of accessories / mounts you can use to attach a mixpre3 to the bottom of your camera.. and then rig the bebob micro 45wh to power it and you’re all set. I actually have an update vid coming for rigs like this soon!

I use a Sony a7iii. Usually with the Ronin S or a cage, and a Atomos Shinobi. Might be a problem using a hot shoe mount with the cage at least? Looking forward to seeing your video on XLR rigs :)

The first batch of the S-Mic 2s came phase inverted to the S-Mic 2 which I verified as I had pre-ordered my 2S. What is your thought on this? Is this a deal-breaker?

I think it’s a feature to improve indoor recording and reduce phase cancellation issues, from what I’ve heard other reviewers saying (I have no real knowledge about this particular issue, Curtis Judd would probably be more qualified to answer) - but if it’s just on a single batch of 2s and the rest are not phase inverted I’m positive deity will swap it out for you, I know the guys over there and they are on top of customer service.
