Great stuff Del - just watched the simple skills relay one as well. Some stuff I knew already and a few revelations that will help me in future. Thanks for adding positivity and mate-ship to the community. I know the community is awesome already, but your attitude and ability to impart and share your own knowledge is a great example of why that is. My bike recently out-grew its warranty period, meaning I don't have to have Honda service is as a warranty condition, so I got the workshop manual, a decent torque-wrench and have just done the 48000Km major service, saving myself a fortune and learning a lot too! Very helpful, will store it away both mentally and in my playlist. All the very best and ride safe :)

Hey buddy... good to hear from you, and i think like you that the biker community has a certain sense of family about it... i dont think i would be as motivated to send out the message and reach out to my fellow man if it was the car community.. also cars are too fragmented into different genres and groups.. bikers are one family and we all need to stick together... last statistic i read, we were just 1% of road users..! pretty tight group hah... take care buddy.. all the best. Del.

The ohms difference you saw (.03 to .04) when you measured your first glass fuse was through your hands and body. It's helpful to be aware that if your hands are touching both leads, you're reading parallel resistance through your body.
@RenchRanch

Another function of the Multi-Meter that is extremely useful is the continuity checker (also know as a diode check). I know you can check continuity with the other modes but there is one built-in for this task. The symbol is the sideways triangle with the line on it. On most MM's it will "beep" if the leads are touching together when set to this mode. This is a very useful way to check for a short (a wire grounding against something it's not supposed to), or that a wire isn't broken along its length. When you hear a beep you know that the 9Vdc battery inside the Multi-Meter has a path from the positive wire to the negative (you can just touch the leads together to test it). I beep test stuff as a quick way to verify a circuit before I crack into using the Volt or Ohm meter. Great video as always, clear and concise. The image quality of the video looks wonderful. Cheers! It's good the video shows one doesn't have to have a really expensive professional meter to do the sort of checks you will do as a home mechanic, but, for the people who don't already have one, may I suggest spending a couple of Pounds more for one which has an audible continuity check function. You should still expect to pay less than 30 Pounds and, as a bonus, some of those meters come with a temperature range and probe as well, which is very useful at times. Anyway, audible continuity check function, you won't regret it.
@JVerschueren
@JVerschueren 7 лет назад
I've worked in electronics for most of my career thus far as well and I agree with you. This sort of multimeter is not fit for purpose in electronics or professional applications. However, for basic troubleshooting on bikes, cars and around the home, they're perfectly adequate. Just that, like I said, I consider an audible continuity check a must/luxury one should afford oneself.
@davidholden2658
@davidholden2658 7 лет назад
Agreed, I'm no electrician but the audible continuity check is a great feature. Much easier than reading the resistance off the screen, especially if you're working ion something in an awkward place.

@martincarey8620
@martincarey8620 7 лет назад
Nice one Del, well explained... I always use the water comparison too, to explain voltage, current, power and resistance. One very key point is that if you ever use the Amp setting (with the red lead in the Amp/current socket), then you MUST put the lead back into the voltage socket when you're finished, because the current setting is basically short circuit, meaning if you use the meter thinking you're checking voltage afterwards, then you will short the battery out through the wiring, blowing fuses, and also destroying your multimeter. They are also extremely handy for telling if your alternator is working on your bike or car... If anyone is interested in how to check for this, then I'm happy to advise on here.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
Yeah, its more obvious and literal than we think... the current must "continue" along the lead and not "resist", so the reading for "resistance" must be zero, they you have perfect "continuity"..! aint hard once you think methodically aye.!

Nice "basics only" video, but I think there is one pretty important basic thing to know about multimeters that was not covered: don't EVER try to measure current "directly". That is switch the meter to measure amps and connect it directly to a current source like a car/bike battery or even worse - the mains. You WILL blow the fuse in the meter, or if the meter doesn't have one (some of the cheap ones don't) blow the meter itself and possibly your hand with it. All the amps ranges in all the meters (except clamp meters, but that's a different story) are about measuring current flowing in a circuit. So if you connect the meter set to measure amps directly across a battery, that's essentially a dead short. That's why the amps measurement usually has it's own separate input jack - so that you don't blow your meter accidently while switching through the different ranges.

As an auto sparky by trade, that was a great little introduction. Couldn't have done it better myself hahaha

Thanks David, it's pretty simple stuff aye once you understand the device and what you're actually reading!
