Ever wanted to be good at something, but practicing was really helping? This video describes the steps it takes to practice deliberately, because it is how you practice not how much you practice that makes all of the difference.

My wife has this strange and amazing ability to recall 'stories, jokes, events, etc'! The way she can recall and tell a joke amazes me. I feel envious of her this ability. Because I cannot at all tell a joke after reading or hearing it!!! I thought, her that ability was her innate 'nature'!! And I cannot tell a joke like her, because I don't have the 'ability'..... But it turns out,she actually practiced telling jokes since her childhood..She learned to tell jokes from her father, who encouraged her to remember and recall jokes,stories....In my family, nothing like that happened!! The point is,most things are 'learned'! Yes,there are some advantages,if one has physical superiority! But then, nurturing and developing skills matter the most!!

Great video, excellent breakdown and template that I can actually use. This video was fantastic and expertly put together, I have read Anders Erickson book on deliberate practice but was left without actionable steps, this video provided exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this wonderful video. Keep up the great work and God Bless.

Robert Frost's poem was actually meant in a sarcastic tone, both paths where depicted to be identical or similar enough where the slight difference didn't matter, he depicts the subject (himself?) as wanting to take both paths but realizing he probably wont go back due to time. It was actually a comment on how people justify, evaluate and qualify past decisions and how we think when confronted with choices we can only take a fraction of. Sometimes we make up reasons to make us feel better about choices that likely had equivalent outcomes. I think it's speculated the poem got one of his close friends killed, well not really as there where many other factors leading up to it. A man named Edward Thomas was one of his close friends decided to "take the less traveled road" and died in battle WW1, ironically; if you have any knowledge of history that path was one that was actually VERY traveled by young men of the day. Also there's the Dunning Kruger effect also has a problem, ones own incompetence doesn't only effect the individual but the assessment of other experts. They could pick the wrong "expert" and end up less competent. It's why we have institutions for disciplines that can be taught. Also motivation is a skill that needs to be practiced or at least can be, there's that paradox of being unmotivated to be motivated requiring motivation break that spell. Other then that, seems like sound advice.

Nice video! The official book on the science of expertise just came out recently. It is called "Peak: secrets from the new science of expertise" by k. anders ericsson and robert pool. I'm currently reading it so there wasn't anything new to me in this video. But it is really great. I also recommend the book to you. Best regards

Just one missing attribute. ‘Have confidences in yourself ‘. The more competitive your endeavor the more detractors you will fine. Set your own highest posable standard, and do not be dissuaded. A person’s reach should exceed their grasp, or what's a heaven for? Robert Browning

What Would I Like To Be Better At? Does It Feel Like You Have No Talent For These Things? What Are Your Thoughts On Nature Vs Nurture When It Comes To Talent? Your Skill Level Is Determined By Both Nature & Nurture And Greatly Depends On You & Imagination You Need Discipline (Practice, Practice, Practice) It Is Not Just Practicing But HOW You Practicing. Practice Alone Is Not Enough. Must FOCUS ON WEAKNESSES & Make It A Strength HOW WILL YOU MEASURE IT? Feedback Is Crucial. Feedback Such As Time & Percentage. Understanding Skill Development Is An Active Area Of Research. This Is A Gift. GOD Said Cultivate. Intense Practice & Deliberate Practice. Outstanding Performance Is About A Attitude & Confidence. COMPETE WITH YOURSELF AND DEMAND RELENTLESS FEEDBACK. THE BEST BECOME THE BEST THIS WAY DELIBERATE PRACTICE - Is It All That It Takes To Be A Expert? What Is Talent? Talent Is Natural Skill That Comes From Birthday. Height Average Height In NBA Is 6’7. Physical Superiority, IQ, Perfect Musical Pitch Is That All You Need? YOU NEED MORE THAN HEIGHT. Calvin Murphy Was 5’7 And A Hall Of Fame. A Lot Of People Appear To Succeed Without Talents & Have Phenomenal Will Some Sports Are Highly Selective Like Male Gymnast. William Faulkner Did Not Go To Ivy League School What Are The Talented Saying? Paul Coffey Says You Work Hard To Get Good And Harder To Get Better DELIBERATE PRACTICE - Repeated Exercise In Or Performance Of An Activity Or Skill DELIBERATE - DONE CONSCIOUSLY AND INTENTIONALLY; FULLY CONSIDERED! Not Just Practicing But HOW YOU PRACTICE STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO SUCCESS 1.) Find Something That You Are Very Motivated To Do 2.) Practice & OBSERVE VERY CAREFULLY What Is Working And Not What Is Working 3.) Every Day Mentality Win Each Day 4.) Find A Coach To Help You Figure Out What Is Not Working - Not Being Confident & Low Effort 5.) Design Metrics That You Can Use To Measure Progress Such As Missed Free Throws & Time Or Percentage. 6.) Practice Only Those Things That Will Bring Improvements. Practice On The Rare Hard Things So You Can Become Great 7.) Be Inventive - Use Your Imagination. Find Out What Works For Me. For Example, If I Want To Get Better At The 3 Ball PRACTICE ONLY THE 3 BALL UNTIL I MASTER IT. Off The Dribble 100 Makes & 100 Catch & Shoot 30/60/90 REPEAT IT GO THROUGH UNPLEASANT PRACTICE A DREAM DOES NOT BECOME A REALITY THROUGH MAGIC. IT TAKES SACRIFICE. I Practice On My 3 & Jumping And Confidence Has Came From The Results Of Deliberate Practice...Days, Hours, Weeks, Years!! Identify Weakness Performance Level & Constantly Perfect The Gift.

Good video, your accent is perfect for such a video and I followed along well. I have just started my own plan to put a thousand hours of deliberate practice into broadsword fighting (epic right? there's a school near me) So I was looking for vids like this to see what the current thinking is. One small point, for me the pace of this video could be sped up by a factor of 2. It's different for everyone but a 10-12 minute vid would probably be ideal.Feedback is a tricky one with my training atm. I can film myself/ look in mirror to see problems and I can feel when I'm making poor cuts and footwork. But the direct feedback is from the sparring itself, with a coach. Cheers!

You're missing a crucial aspect of Deliberate Practice, which is pacing yourself. In the 1993 paper by Ericsson, they explicitly state that experts' practice routines start out very very small and increase very gradually over the years, with age and accumulated experience causing the practice routines to to develop. Additionally, exceeding 4.5 hours of Deliberate Practice per day is detrimental. ALSO - because it is so difficult - if someone jumps into this process and tries to perform 4.5 hours of Deliberate Practice per day, or even more, in order to "catch up", the research shows they will most likely burn out after a short period and quit the domain altogether. You have to start out very, very small. If you decide "Oh, I want to get good at X, so I'll make a goal of doing 1,000 hours of Deliberate Practice this year," maybe you'll reach the goal, but I guarantee your progress will stall and you'll burn out soon after, if not much before. Instead, it's best to start off with about 200 hours of Deliberate Practice in a given year. 200 the next year, then maybe 300, then 300 again, and 500, and so forth, until after many years you have reached the practice routines and pace of experts in the domain. This is something I never see anyone talk about when it comes to Deliberate Practice, and it's incredibly frustrating. I've injured myself and emotionally/physically "burned out" many times because I didn't know about this point until very recently.

I dont think it has to be hard. If u are true motivated, it can be good.

if it isn't hard you aren't practice outside your comfortzone which means you are practicing where you are comfortable which means you aren't improving. It has to be hard if you want to improve.
