The classic banjo pickin' scene from the movie Deliverance.
Deliverance is a 1972 drama film produced and directed by John Boorman. Principal cast members include Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty in his film debut. The film is based on a 1970 novel of the same name by American author James Dickey. The screenplay was written by Dickey and an uncredited Boorman.
In 2008, Deliverance was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Billy Redden plays "Dueling Banjos" opposite Ronny Cox, who joins him on guitar. Redden plays "Lonnie", a mentally retarded, inbred, but extremely gifted banjo player. The song went to #2 for four weeks on the U.S. pop chart in 1973 and topped the adult contemporary chart for two weeks the same year. It also led to a successful lawsuit by the song's composer, since it was used in the film without his permission.
"Duelling Banjos" was arranged and performed for the movie by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell and was included on the soundtrack album. The song had been composed in 1955 by Arthur Smith as a banjo instrumental he called "Feudin' Banjos". Smith recorded it, playing a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo player Don Reno. When he was not acknowledged as the composer by the filmmakers, Smith sued. He eventually won, receiving songwriting credit as well as royalties. Two young musicians, Ron Brentano and Mike Russo, had originally been signed to play their adaptation for the movie, but instead it was performed by the others.

Beneath the beautiful banjo playing and connection between two people through music, a dark sense of foreboding is evident. Bits of the dialogue, certain characters’ faces, the woman in the window reveal this; it’s such a great scene that I love so much.

@Mark rapacki I agree. The movie is about how the more ‘advanced’ modern people don’t understand or respect the connection that the rural folk have to their home. The banjo kid is tricking the guitar guy into thinking he is simple , then the kid blows the guitarist away. The men are going down the river because it is soon going to be ‘tamed’ in the name of progress. It is an environmental activist picture , albeit over the top in a 70’s way( the rape analogy) ,

This is the perfect beginning to this movie. It shows how our main characters are so confident in their manhood and superiority over the locals. My great grandparents had a banjo magnet on their fridge and every time I’d go into the kitchen I’d press on the strings and it’d play this song. Not sure why, but I began thinking of them tonight and needed to hear this song again. Hadn’t realized it was from this movie. So strangely nostalgic hearing it again. A small but good memory.

What a scene. Virtually no dialogue or action yet this scene tells you everything you need to know just with acting. The ending of the scene says it all as the man thought he had become a sort of “friend/ally” with the young boy, but that wasn’t the case as the boy refuses to even shake hands. That there was a sign that nobody back in those woods should be trusted, even if they look and act friendly.

As a southern mountain boy this hits home so well. Reminds me of growing up walking down these back roads or a holler as we call them and hearing people sitting on the front porch playing music just enjoying life one day at a time. Despite what takes place in this film, I can assure we're nothing like that. The Irish and Scottish settled in these mountains where I'm from. Best way I can sum mountain folk or hillbillies or Hill Williams as I've heard it called before is we're just hard working lower class people.

I first saw this movie 15 years ago and it still gives me the creeps, it's one of those movies you can't un-see.

Had never seen it then it was on a long flight and decide to watch it. Never forget the young girl next to me watch in horror on the squeal like a pig scene. Just have to keep watching and Prendegast it’s not happening like a sex scene on tv with your parents.

I love how behind the stage they all wanted just to creep out the audience by some uncanny plot, but instead they accidentaly maked a skinny youth bajno kid totally immortalized in entire history of cinema.

One of the most iconic movie scenes ever put on film.

I saw Deliverance at a theatre in Montreal when it was first released. To me, it was quite frightening but back then movies did frighten me.... like Dirty Harry or Dressed to Kill. The interesting thing is that had someone come up to me that night as I was leaving the theatre to tell me that I would end up living there, I would have been really shocked more so than by the effect of the movie! Many years later, I ended up in the Blue Ridge not far from the river where the movie was shot. The banjo player was from a community not far from where I live. I have travelled to a number of countries and although I have been out west to the plains, Rockies and coast, my heart is in Appalachia where I feel so fortunate to reside.

Passage musical génial du film culte DELIVERANCE... Mémorable !

Keep in mind the movie Deliverance went up against the movie Godfather for best picture in '73 . Deliverance , made on a smaller budget , had some great cinematography in comparison . Many people have heard of this iconic production that have yet to see it
