59 year old drunken wild man from NZ here. Everyone my age, despite musical tastes sees Glen Campbell as a legend. We would sing his songs at primary school in the late sixties and early seventies and when watching this, I appreciate my childhood education. Stay well..
😂 My dad was a Glen Campbell fan in the 60s and 70s, and I liked him, along with my dad’s other albums, Bob Dylan, The Kingston Trio, Ian and Sylvia, Bluegrass. But I didn’t tell my friends. Lol. I eventually got in to everything rock music, Beatles, Beach Boys, The Who, Rush, etc. Now I’m 62, and I appreciate the older stuff more than ever.
My grandfather William Bernard Lee was also a self taught fiddler and played with blue grass legend Bill Monroe! It’s amazing what those without internet were able to accomplish!
Most people think of Glen Campbell as a singer. But he was a wonderful virtuoso on the guitar. Watch how effortless this famously difficult piece is to him, and he was SELF TAUGHT. A truly God-given talent. R.I.P.
my 1st gig i was 8 my mum took me 2 see him at the manchester apollo 1st half i moaned like fuck cos i dint know better ....2nd half he came out n blew me away with his guitars ....my next gig on my own this time was Tiffanys in great yarmouth to see some unknown australian band - 45 p ticket ......oh yeh they were called AC/DC !!! :D
In his day Glen Cambell could walk onto the stage and stand in for anyone as he often did. Don't let the suit fool you he at the drop of a hat could stand in for Deep purple or 3 dog night. Even today few can match him.
In 1970 I worked on the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (TV Show) as a boom operator and cameraman. Campbell was the kindest man I've ever known. While the crew was under contract with Viacom-CBS Campbell was known to give bonuses out of his pocket to the crew. He really cared about people. I still have the Timex watch he gave us all at Christmas that year.
Great comment Ren. Some of the cast/band are on the fan group. Bob Felts, Bill Graham, John Fleming, also Glen's kids. facebook.com/groups/glencampbell
He was once asked on the Ed Sullivan Show and while Ed was extolling his virtues as a musician, Glen looked down and said, "Ah, shoot, Mr. Sullivan, I'm just a hairy-legged boy from Arkansas."
Glen Campbell is regarded by many to be one of the finest guitarists ever. He was a legend in studio work before he became famous to the public and played with the "wrecking Crew", a collective of LA-based musicians who played on the recordings of dozens of famous musicians. He was a terrific singer, songwriter, and entertainer. I was a teenager when he emerged with top-charting singles in the 60s and even saw him live in concert on August 5, 1969, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum, in Indianapolis. I still remember what a great show it was! Something many don't know is that he filled in for Brian Wilson, touring with the Beach Boys, playing bass and singing the falsetto harmonies, in 1964 and 1965.
@@itomburgess I believe he read chord charts, but not standard notation, which would be important in studio work. He could also hear something one time and play it.
Wow! This was--by FAR--the best rendition of this song I've ever heard! I've played guitar for nearly 50 years (no good on the banjo!), and absolutely agree that Glen was an incredible guitarist (among other talents)! With this disclaimer, it genuinely appeared that Glen was no only equally yoked with Carl, but that Carl appeared to be presenting a literal challenge to Glen. VERY well done, Gentlemen!!!
These two STARS played in Concert at Apollo Theater Manchester England on 7th April 1977 and my late wife and I had the Pleasure of their company sing and talking to us with full house lights on while on stage. The REASON??? our Wedding Night, and Glen joked with me about being in the audience instead of in bed, the whole Audience gave us a standing ovation it was wonderful, And a week later my wife recieved a letter and lots of records and goodies from Glens staff. Never to be Forgotten
Elaine Campbell passed away the same way my wife did I know what the families went through I pray for him thank you thank Campbell for your great music
Sometime in the Seventies Glen was touring in England and he came to a Local Nightclub in my Home Town and I along with my Husband and Friends we got tickets for his Show and I will never forget the Response from the Audience when he played Dueling Banjo's the Audience went Crazy and he could Entertain all night and genuinely appreciate the Response he Deserved. God Bless his many Friends and Family ❤️ He will never be Forgotten.💞🌹 Angela 💖 xxx
For many of us, this really shows how fleeting time really is. It was just 'a few years ago' when Glenn was hugely popular on TV and the radio. It's now been just over four years since Glenn passed away at the time I write this. As it's said, we get a brief moment to dance in the sun before sunset comes and before we know it we're old when we were young just last week. One day, we look into the mirror and wonder when it was that we started getting gray and wonder when those first wrinkles appeared that we hadn't noticed until that moment because we get so busy with life, raising kids and working all of the time.
I see it another way, Matthew. This is the WAKEUP CALL to those of us on the other side of 60 (or 50, even) to do it while we still can, before it all creeps up on us, and we can't do it anymore. Arthritis has already started with my husband and me. We have answered that wakeup call and are doing all the things we have wanted to do before it's too late. My husband and I will be at one of the big parks in Orlando and will be FRONT ROW on all of the roller coasters and will be on ALL of the water slides in the water park. We have been big fishing in Costa Rica twice since last year. Yes, Matthew, time is REALLY fleeting and ya gotta live it while you can. My husband and I have 70+ years of critical care experience between us and see this on a daily basis. I was freight trained head on last year when my strong, healthy, happy, beautiful 32 year old daughter suddenly passed from a huge bleed in the brain. I still cry almost every day. I promised her that I would live my BEST life and am doing that, to honor her, and to live for US as well. BTW, I watched Glen Campbell's Goodtime Hour when I was a kid. Never missed it.
@@artgilbert5182 I used to listen to As I lay Dying, Arch Enemy, Machine Head on occasion, and eventually transferred through to appreciating Glen, Roy, Chet Akins, Gary Moore, David Gilmour off the back of raving about Buckethead, Zakk Wylde, Mick Thompson. So in a way I guess we could say that Metal is a gateway genre.
Is it just me......does Carl resemble Edward Norton? Totally agrees that he is an amazing talent. Glen Campbell was very popular back then too. I was 10 when this show aired.
I was on my honeymoon when I saw Glen & Carl at the Apollo Stadium in Adelaide. Glen was wearing a white sequined suit. They played this song & of course some others. Both absolutely brilliant! It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to, unforgettable & that's why I remember it to this day, some 46 years later. Glen is one of the best artists of all time. His 2 concerts were completely packed out.
lol not really: he's sold like, gajillions of records and back in the day he performed with EVERYONE who was anyone at all. He is a legend, and has left us a wonderful legacy of good-natured, good-times MUSIC!! Huge part of the sound-track of my youth.
Still to this day I am blown away by GC's guitar playing, I mean he was playing banjo licks on the guitar! As a young acoustic guitarist in the early 70's, when all my friends had gone electric, I stumbled across a 60's album, THE 12 String Guitar of GLEN CAMPBELL, and was a fan forever. When his career took off I was disappointed his voice and those great Jimmy Webb songs took the light off of his guitar playing, but he always managed to take occasion to make sure everyone remembered he had serious chops on the guitar.
What I take from this clip , is he was a fantastic musician , and a generous man with a warm sense of humour . Anybody would be proud too be known for any single thing in that list . Yet here he was , on top of the world ,& no sign of any sort of inflated star ego . He was a remarkable man , who any rising star should look too , when they need an example to follow .
Amén from November 2022! We were just on a cruise and two guitarists were taking requests for money. I got up there requesting "Dueling banjos"... And they respectfully declined....
That was one of the coolest things about Glen Campbell .. He loved to showcase young talent and he WANTED them to look good and do well. Both incredible talents.
papa bits He definitely could pick them strings. I prefer acoustic music and unfortunately there’s not a lot of great musicians that can strum and sing without any background noise.
I saw these two perform the Duel live. My memory tells me it was before the Deliverance film came out but I might be wrong. It caused a sensation in the hall, standing ovation.
I still miss Glen and his amazing voice and guitar playing after all these years. Loved the fantastic echo from the banjo on this. Brilliant performance by both Glen and Carl 😊💖
I think a lot of people don't realize how good a guitar player Campbell was because his own hit records were not particularly reliant on the guitar. But in the 1950's and 60's he was one of the best session guitarists in the business. He played on a huge number of hit records for the top names.
I saw your comment and just watched Glen play Classical Gas with an orchestra behind him. I don't know if it's the performance you are referring to to but I didn't enjoy it, as I feel it was more about the orchestra, and not enough about glen, tbh.
Yes Glen was a fine player,as evidenced by the fact he was a member of the "Wrecking Crew", a bunch of monster musicians in Los Angeles who played on thousands of recording sessions for all the top artists, from Sinatra down to "famous" young groups who could barely hold their instruments, let alone play them...The latters` secrets were safe with these sessioneers though..lol!

Nearly 50 years ago, my dad and I saw Glen Campbell perform a concert to mark the opening of the Hartford (Conn.) Civic Center. His consummate musicianship was evident from first note to last.
That makes me smile with tears in my eyes. This was fantastic. I will miss Glen. He was a true artist. One of the best if not the best studio guitarist ever. Thanks for RU-vid to be able to see these clips.
Glenn Campbell was highly regarded as one of the best guitar players by many great guitar players of his time. He was respected by rock, country and bluegrass pickers alike... what a talent. and the banjo player not bad either
