YACHT DELIVERY CHRONICLES : "Sorisa" a 1983 Cape Dory 28
Welcome to another episode of Yacht Delivery Chronicles.
On this episode I was hired by two of our Patrons, Kevin and Clara, to help them move their new boat from Oxnard, California to Dana Point, California. The total distanced covered in the delivery was 90nm and it took us 18 hours motorsailing with following seas (with some night sailing without the sound of the engine thrown in for fun)
We crossed paths with a megapod of thousands of charging dolphins, many of whom took a minute to play on our bow before getting back into the masses.
On the midnight watch we sailed into a massive crowded big ship anchorage that was obscured by a thick blanket of fog. Currently there are 30+ cargo ships under anchor due to a back up at the Los Angeles Harbor and we would have had to slow our process to a crawl if the boat didn't have a working radar.
We got into Dana Point and to Sonrisa's new slip safe and sound where Clara was waiting with coffee in hand.
I have very happy for Kevin and Clara and look forward to following along with all of their future adventures on instagram.

We can't thank you enough, James. The delivery was so much fun and we're overwhelmed with joy to have Sonrisa safe in her new home port. It's an added bonus to have this passage well documented. Onward for more adventures to come.

Great to see a little it of Oxnard again - and a lot of the islands (via your series) - it's been 31 yrs for me... I too used to "herd" those giant pods of dolphins - running the boat in a big circle at about 15kts - so beautiful!!!

I had four sailboats in San Diego and I have seen the migration of the porpoises Dolphins whatever they are and yes thousands of them as far as your eyes can see what a sight to behold. I've also been 1000 miles of the coast of Acapulco Mexico and they say there are no fish way out at sea but I had a similar sighting and there were yellowtail tuna thousands of them as far as the eyes could see and yes we pulled one aboard the vessel. That was a deliverer I did from Fort Lauderdale Florida to North Shore Oahu Haleiwa. And that looks like a very nice Cape Dory well kept up very nice from what I can see. And the sound of a single-cylinder diesel cannot be mistaken. If I'm not mistaken hahaha hahaha

Great vid! I love your boat delivery series however, (I hate to be a bummer) I would encourage everyone (especially new sailors who may or may not have MOB practice/experience ) to wear life vests while at sea, especially at night. Cheers!

Hey James. Just stumbled on this Cape Dory delivery, while searching for intel on C.D. 28’s. Considering an upgrade from my very capable Flicka-20, but a bit too small for me & wife for cruising long distance. I ❤ Cape Dory design. Solid vessel. Also… just looked at one ALSO in Dana Pt. 1979 circa. I’d really love to meet Kevin & Clara. I’m also a Botanist & Biologist.! Plan to sail to Catalina and Channel Islands.. and beyond. I’ll look for them on IG. Btw. I sail my Flicka out of Long Beach /Wilmington.

Our dolphins a like black calicos with white specs here in NW Florida. Sometimes we get grays but the usually stay more towards Louisiana & Texas. When it get real warm the manatees migrate up from south Florida.

I have some in mind as CD 28, Bristol 27 Contessa 26, Columbia 8.3 , Sabre, C&C, Tartan but I my budget is about $10-$15k.Thanks in advance, Paul

Hi James. Just a quick Q+A....what's the donkey on that dory. Sounded like a 3 cylinder air cooled Lister. Too much noise for a water cooled diesel. Great seeing that huge pod of dolphins eh.? Great episode. Atb

Its a water cooled diesel, Volvo Penta MD7B, and boy does it make that boat move at low RPMs

What do you know about the cape dory and rig. Seemed like an unusual rig, but I’m not a sailor.
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 3 года назад
Yeah it has a Jib Boom or “Self Tending Jib” - first time I have sailed one before, the benefit is that there is only one jib sheet so it tacks itself which is great for beginning sailors, less to mess with , but I don’t know how you could get the same level of performance out of this sail like you would a regular headsail set up, you also can’t heave to with this set up

We are cruising all summer and not taking deliveries but most professional captains get paid $350-$400 a day + airfare to and from their home port (additional crew for multi day trips usually make $150 / day per person) and all provisions and fuel costs are covered by the owner.
@jeffreyalberson9742

@@SOLDOZER because i need experienced crew. Im the only person aboard with any sailing knowledge. I plan on teaching the kids but they are still to young to work the sails. The wife is also new to sailing. I looked into hiring a captain and one crew but they want almost a grand per day. If i cant find a reasonable captain and crew, im probably just going to put it on a truck and ship it.
