Dell Optiplex 390 Diagnostic Code 3

Dell Optiplex 390 came in with a no boot complaint. Got diagnostic light 3 and blue power led followed by immediate shutdown. Did the usual diagnostic procedures: different ram, psu, fan, unplugged all non-essential connectors. After all this, and some google-fu, I came to the conclusion it was a bad motherboard. Got the new mobo in from Dell; same problem. Now banging head. Tried everything again, including putting the CPU in a different machine. Same conclusion; bad mobo number 2. While on the phone with the Dell tech, for some reason, I thought to try a different power button harness. Don't ask me why I thought to do this because I have absolutely no idea. Pulled a power button harness from another machine (Optiplex 3010 waiting in the lab for delivery to customer), plugged in the harness, damn thing booted right up. Dell tech couldn't believe it, engineer couldn't believe it. They are sending me another mobo and complete front panel assembly with all harnesses

Thanks for the update. I faced the same problem and your solution really helped me out. My Dell Optiplex 390 is now working perfectly without shutting down automatically. You're a GENIUS

Thanks a lot, they told to replace PSU which costs 2400 INR, decided to try myself, started googling, came across your video, mannnn! your solution WORKS, but i did something different, step-wise, 1. press power button & then un-plug the power button cable from motherboard 2. ran diagnostics (gave power button cable failure) 3. exit & it re-booted into system 4. after completion, re-plug power cable 5. restarted system 6. after completion, shutdown now power on as usual :-)

I ran into this same problem on two Dell Optiplex 3010's. Changed motherboards etc., etc. I finally discovered the power button problem myself just before seeing this post.

Yes, it's probably concerning that I am finding this video helpful in 2023 for this model but the power button swap did the trick. Saved a lot of frustration!

Same problem here in ireland. Dell tech support were no help, they said the power supplys that I was using had 2 high a wattage... idiots. But i discovered that unplugging the power button cable and setting it to boot on power restore did the trick (found your video afterwards) sadly the power button is not available to buy in ireland, even on ebay uk, so i tried to use a new power button, leaving the power button LEDS connected and its doing the same thing, so its a bug with the led lights the causes the problem

Same thing happening with Optilex 990. Even bios diagnostics pass but will shut off before booting. Also powers on by itself. Never thought of this. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for this info! So far I have not encountered this issue but I see a lot of these in my field of work so it's very good information to know to help keep these in production and out of the landfills or from being cut up. I have a 790 myself and it works as if it were new.

I encountered the same problem and I noticed the system behaves the same way when plugging AC connector and pressing the power button - the brief one-second power-up followed by immediate shutoff. I concluded it's BIOS setup problem. Go to BIOS setup while booting : F2->Power Management->AC recovery, select "Last state" and Optiplex will boot normally from now on.

Just encountered this power button issue on a 390 minitower (appeared 1 month after 3-yr warranty expired). Thanks to this video, instead of junking the PC, I removed the power button and was able to power on the PC by using a screwdriver to "jumper" the two power pins. The replacement power button cable is available at Newegg.com for $14.99.

I am having this same issue. It boots up sometimes though. The power supply would trip. After pressing the reset button on the PSU about 10 times, it would come back on. Unplug power for a few seconds and it will do it again. Reseated the processor. Took out all components. Same issues. It could be the power supply since the rear LED doesn't turn on until I reset it a few times.

I hope I am as lucky. I have a 390 mini tower that will not power on. I do not get the 3 error when I try to power on normally. I do however get the 3 when I hold down in the reset button that is on the power supply. I have ordered a replacement cable, not sure if it will fix it.

Thank you the video. But I dont understand what happened with my optiplex 390. If I push the power button nothing happened. No lights in front of the computer. If I push the power supply test button, (the little black button at the back of the computer) and I hold it, the CPU fan is working. If i take away my finger no working. But now if I push the power button harder...it is working...but 4 seconds later stopped! I tried now--> if I remove the power button's connector from the motherboard, then it is working contantly. And The front lights show: 1-2 after 1-3 after 2-3....oh my god.. :( What is your opinion? Anybody can help me?
