In this video, I'm going to show you 4 ways to install an OS boot drive. There was actually a 5th option I was going to demonstrate, but unfortunately I could never get that to work, so I won't count that as an option here. The 5th option was going to be using a Dell vFlash SD card in the iDRAC 6 vflash slot. Unfortunately, every time I tried this, it would kill the vFlash SD card.
The 4-way boot drive options are:
1:01 - the LSI storage controller
2:05 - the internal USB
3:00 - the internal SD Card Reader
5:20 - using SATA SSD in optical bay
10:44 - the 5th option that didn't work; iDRAC6 vFlash
14:35 - looking at all boot options in the BIOS setup
18:46 - Booting off SATA SSD
21:44 - Booting off the internal USB
25:17 - Booting off internal SD Card Reader
If you'd like to get the H200 in this video that is pre-flashed to LSI IT mode HBA firmware, and set correctly to work in the integrated storage slot of Dell 11th generation servers, get it here: ebay.to/2N6PCZT

Another GREAT option is a PCIe card with mSATA (mine has dual mSATA) and my OS drive is cloned on both mSATA drives. FreeNAS loves it. I Have 3 r710 systems with this setup.

Another option is to use a PCI Express M.2 card that supports a SATA connection. You can then use a SATA based M.2 drive, and use SATA port on the motherboard for connection.

Wish this was around when I got my first R710 ... i did alot of reading into it, then ordered the DVD drive tray and it was a simple plug and play. I did have to change one out though . I originally got the 9mm tray ( if I remember correct), swapped it out for the 12mm version and attached the blue latch and worked flawlessly. 125Gb SSD for proxmox then had all my bays open for zfs. Alway watching your videos. Hoping to get a R720xd and Powervault around Christmas, so I'll have to see if you have a Raid controller and external sas controller on your ebay store then.

Oh yeah!! I should have mentioned that.. yes, the optical bay in the R710 is of the 12.7mm variety. They are slimmer ones, so yeah.. now I wished i had mentioned that! thanks for bringing it up!

17:15 Quick Tip: If you're debugging PCIe cards/slots or various BIOS parameters on a fast system where catching the F2 boot prompt is a gamble you can enable an empty SATA port and after Post completes you have the choice to see if your OS is happy with your changes or going back to BIOS to continue your tweaking.

You could also use a USB to SATA power only cable, and run another SATA data cable to the onboard port. That way you can have both the SSD and optical drive running over SATA!

I replaced the DVD with a caddy, with an SSD installed, plus I installed a second SSD in the 'space' next to it, and spliced a power cable from the original DVD power cable - works fine. Its SSD runs down under the CPU heatsinks to the second SATA connector on the motherboard.

im a tad confused, I probably missed something on my end. so, I boot my esxi from my flash card (the one in front on the little daughterboard.) esxi boots. Then I need to use the ssd in the dvd tray to store vm's on. One of the vm's gets the h210 passed thru and it uses all the drives with zfs and shares them. Since the ssd is kind of small I am limited in the number of vm's. Is there another way to do this ?

Are there limits or specific drives sizes of drives compatible with the H700 controller? Dell r710 documentation seem pretty specific about drives sizes that the r710 supports, but I already have drives that vary in size from what is listed. For example, can I get away with using a 120GB SATA3 SSD in one of my 2.5" drive bays for a boot drive? Or in the optical bay? I just purchased my first r710 server and this is all new to me. Want to make sure I can return my drives I purchased if I won't be able to use them. Does fully updated BIOS and firmware for H700 controller allow different size drives than listed in the Dell r710 documentation?

Has anyone tried to utilize the 7th and 8th SATA/SAS connection from the raid controller to handle a SSD?? Especially a H700 which would give us 6gb SATA/SAS ?
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 4 года назад
That's a really interesting idea. H700 or H200, both would provide SAS2/SATA3 capability. One would have to find a SAS cable that splits a SFF8087 to Right-angle SFF8087 + (2 other data lanes of some sort, SATA or SFF8087). Dell has a cable that is sort of like that for the R410, Dell P/N: N262J, but it's not the right type of right angle nor the right length I think. I need to see if there's a way to custom crimp SAS cables...

1 option I didn't really mention here, is to use the USB drive to bootstrap to a NVMe PCIe drive. I demonstrated that later in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SuAn6IG4kF4.html And by far, that was the fastest boot time I've ever seen in a R710. Of course, you OS of choice must be able to support bootstrapping from a USB drive and putting the main OS on the NVMe drive. Not all OSes will allow that easily.

I see that you put what looks like a regular pcie card where the controller use to be. I have an r710 with a perc 6i in there. The manual says that you can't put a regular pcie card in there. It appears that you found a way or they were wrong. What part number card did you install of that one? I want to replace the perc with one flashed into it mode so I can use larger drives. I have the 2.5 inch version instead of the 3.5 inch version.

You might want to mention the different longevity/thermal characteristics of the boot options. I read that USB has a short life due to heat and wear. But in the case of a hypervisor, it won’t get used very often because the server doesn’t get rebooted frequently and the hypervisor lives in RAM with few writes to the USB. What are your thoughts on this?
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 3 года назад
My own experience has been pretty diverse and I can't say for certain that a USB flash drive is significantly less reliable than an SSD for the purposes of booting an OS or hypervisor. Plus, a larger sampling is probably in order to really determine the longevity of various mediums in this type of use case scenario. I don't have those stats. Don't assume hypervisors run completely from RAM; they are usually not much more than a customized OS just like any other OS. Hypervisors have to log activity, and depending on your operational and security needs, that can be a lot or little. Even if you do off-host logging, usually it's a good idea to buffer it on local storage in case of network outage or logging host going offline. In my own experience, I've had long term successes running OSes off USB flash, CF cards, SD cards, etc. But, I've also had failures too. I've also killed industrial grade high endurance SSDs due to excessive writes on very high security servers with heavy auditing/logging requirements. In short, I don't think there's a simple answer to the question, but I think it's a good question. But if you narrow down the scope of the question to what might be relevant to my audience, I think USB flash drives are fine for typical homelab use for a couple of years.
@blackrockcity
@blackrockcity 3 года назад
Art of Server I agree that usb is fine for a couple of years. But with all of the other projects going on, a couple of years has a way of flying by.

Hi, I am very much enjoying your comprehensive explanation of the R710. I have one question please, do you know the maximum capacity SD Card that can be used in the front SD Reader (0RN354)? I did read somewhere that this SD Reader could only cope with SDHC. SDHC seems to imply cards up to and including 32GB. I note that you say a 64GB card will work, I understand 64GB cards are SDXC. Have you tried a 64GB card, or larger perhaps?

@pixitha
@pixitha 4 года назад
You can lower the speed of the fans in ipmi with scripts.
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 4 года назад
The fan noise often depends on the components you install. You might want to check out this video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LYTjgSw1OEA.html where I take actual sound meter readings. Noise is sort of a subjective thing, and each individual has different tolerances for that, and even different tolerances in different situations. So, I think it's best to try to compare quantitatively. In my own subjective opinion, R710 can actually be pretty quiet, but it is not silent that's for sure.
@ericfranklin6229
@ericfranklin6229 4 года назад
You won't find any aftermarket fans ready to use. I have noticed that with low power cpu's and no non-dell pci cards installed the 710 fan noise is minimal. But if you go to the x5600 cpu the fans get louder. Non dell cards will sometimes put fans at up to 80 percent. Slowing down you fans can cause hard drives to overheat under heavy load. You've been warned. LoL

From memory - the Dell branded SD cards are 100% under provisioned - so a 4GB card is actually a 8GB card, 4GB, with 4GB spare to map in when cells die. You'd be very unlucky to pick up cards that are near the end of their life..
@jonathanbuzzard1376
@jonathanbuzzard1376 3 года назад
There is a trick here that you are missing. You don't need to install your whole operating system on the USB/SD card etc. All you require in Linux at least is to put /boot on there. The OS itself then runs on the main software RAID array, where you get the benefit of having your OS under RAID protection. Not that I have ever tried but I imagine you can do something similar with FreeBSD based systems. Once you are only using the USB/SD card for boot, the speed matters even less and reliability goes through the roof. You are only writing to the device when you update the kernel or boot loader. To put this into context, if you consider CentOS6 there where 118 kernels and 11 versions of grub. The chances of you wearing out even the cheapest of flash devices is close to zero. To make things even better you can have a cronjob that copies the contents of /boot onto the main RAID disks. Then if the boot flash device does give up the ghost then you can install a replacement device, boot from recovery media, copy the data back and reinstall the boot loader. Even better the chances are it will give up the ghost during update of the kernel/bootloader which is when you are actually writing to the device so you have notice it has not worked and can fix it in scheduled downtime. I have been using this technique for well over a decade and have yet to actually see a USB/SDcard boot device fail.

I am aware of that technique too, and demonstrated it in my video on installing Linux OS on NVMe on legacy systems that can't boot directly off NVMe. In this case however, the intent was to put the 6 drive bays into a pure data pool, so I would need another location to put the OS content in. If I were to put the OS on any of the other options mentioned in this video, which are natively bootable on their own, I saw no advantage in putting just /boot on the sdcard in the back.

@@ArtofServer The advantage is having your OS protected by RAID. Which is for a server somewhat important, what's the point in having massive of redundancy in the system and then creating a runtime single point of failure? The only time I don't do RAID on a server OS disk is the compute nodes on the HPC cluster at work. Loosing a single node is not a big deal we have many many others, and the user can just resubmit the job. When you do the math it's better in terms of flops per dollar over the lifetime of the system, to spend the money saved from not doing RAID to buying more servers. I also don't when using Linux see the issue with using a small portion of your VG to create an LV for OS, might be different with ZFS on FreeBSD but that is outside my experience. Insisting that all your disks are used for data is simply silly.

@@jonathanbuzzard1376 for the use cases of most homelabs, I think the protection of OS install is a bit less important. But at the end of the day, that's a personal choice for the owner of the server, and may depend on what they are planning to do and their tolerance for os drive failure. In a business environment, I would agree with you on single node applications for SMBs. For larger environment, you're not likely to run anything on a single node if it's important. And if you have automated deployment infrastructure, rebuilding the OS on a failed node should be quick and simple, and segregation of data and OS makes data management easier. But, let's say we put the OS on the main drive bays with redundancy and carved out space for it. It would be natively bootable by itself. I see no advantage in separating /boot on the sdcard. Just boot off the RAID, why complicate it with a separate /boot?

@@ArtofServer In Linux at least you can't natively boot off a RAID5/6 software RAID disk as none of the boot loaders understand that. As I understand it none of the boot loaders understand ZFS either. You can mess about partitioning your drives to make a boot partition but it's a mess and makes replacing a failed drive more complicated than it needs to be. That's why putting just /boot on USB/SD card is a nice work around, that keeps your RAID/ZFS array setup clean. On an R710 the most sensible option of course is a 2.5" drive in the optical bay IMHO.

When installing windows server 2019 or any other windows is for that matter on my Poweredge R710, windows says that they see no hard drives when I clearly have 4 Sata hard drives connected. How do I fix this problem

the only thing i've gotten to successfully and reliably install and run from the idrac sd card via emulated hdd image is ESXI, There is also a sixth option which works which is to use one of these: www.ebay.com/itm/M-2-NGFF-to-Desktop-PCIe-x4-x8-x16-NVMe-SATA-Dual-SSD-PCI-Express-Adapter-Card/153423065707 and use the Sata B Key which is the one directly to the left of the Sata connector, so what you do is plug in the pcie card with your M.2 attached to the port directly to the left of the Sata connector into your R710 and connect a Sata cable going from the pcie card to the R710 motherboard next to the existing Sata cable which goes to the disc drive and enable port b in the bios and then you can install whatever you like to it and boot directly into it as well.

Might be an obscure question but i ordered an ssd bay for the cd slot. And while unpacking it i thought the platic wrapping that came on it was meant to be taken off, but it seems it may have been there to prevent a short. Should I be worried? @artofserver

I'm not sure what could short on a SSD bay? I've never seen that before so I can't say. If anything, you would want things to be grounded properly to the chassis.
