Laptop so thin I can make room for all the dongles I'm gonna need. Wow no headphone jack! Wow.

I agree on the resolution. I got a 4k version of an older XPS 13 and regret it because it affected the battery life a lot.

I’m considering buying a lower priced laptop and appreciate your thorough review of this Dell version. Thank you.

Many thanks for the review, I was really considering this as an option for a second as it can be speced up to 32 GB RAM but seeing the Dell Germany website has a starting price of 1366 Euros for the base 8 GB model compared to 799 $ on the US site is really blowing my mind. Dell must seriously re-visit their price policy especially considering that they do not seem to grasp which features customers are really looking for these days.

I just purchased the exact laptop he has here without the touchscreen for $1100 Canadian which is 723 Euros. I am not sure why it is so expensive in Germany.

Its the same here in Japan. People generally make much less here vs usa yet the price is like double. It makes no sense. I can literally use a 3rd party forwarding company, pay shipping and import fees and still save like 500 euro vs buying local. Its honestly kind of insulting.

Got it at Best Buy open box discounted at $550 with 32gb ram, 1tb storage. Dell updated my guarantee for one yr. The 9315 has No led battery indicator, no camera shutter, lack of ports but can use thunderbolt port and expamd that way, only 60 hz refresh rate. The good; super fast, windows hello works great, portability, does not get hot , you can hear a small whisper when battery is low never loud enough to be intrusive. Slim design fits in a bag back. Keyboard in my opinion is comfortable. Having said all this I would have not bought it at retail price, there are better resolution panels. Hard to pass on this deal with those specs. All in all I’m happy with my purchase.

What kills me is this is $800, which is what you can get an M1 MacBook Air for. I know, I know, Windows vs Mac, but forget about that for a second, which is an actual better computer?

Solid laptop, but I would expect lower prices as the next-gen Intel laptops are getting released this month. They are a more refined version of the bigLITTLE core architecture. So hard to recommend if you get a great deal. I would skip that generation, which was a bit of a beta project and ongoing support may be hit-and-miss. You can get the M1 MB Air for a similar price with better battery life and higher-performance, and that would be my choice for thee market this is aimed at.

Dell really seems out of touch with consumer needs with their laptops the last little while. They look good, but have so many limitations that they just don't make a lot of sense to own.

I really wanted to buy the 9315, but with soldered-on SSD and loss of audio jack port, I ended up getting the previous model (9310). Also, I liked the carbon fiber interior, which distinguished it from other ultrabooks.

Interesting about the webcam not working in Ubuntu. I initially bought an HP Envy x360 and found the same problem. But in the Envy, the internal speakers weren't working either; nor was the touchscreen. I took it back for these reasons. I do hope Dell updates the webcam driver; that's a pretty important feature.

Dell XPS 13 is a great laptop in normal circumstances - I wanted to go for it. After checking the reviews and user opinions, I settled for Asus Zenbook 14 OLED, which is pretty good. With Asus Zenbook, the screen is excellent, ports are many, but the battery life is average. If you work with the 'battery saver' option and do very regular work, the laptop will carry you for 5 to 6 hours. It is a drawback of the Asus Zenbook. I think Dell XPS 13 9315 is good in the case of battery. But if you are going for a beautiful display and many ports, Asus Zenbook is a good option.

heard asus zenbook 14x had issues with display. mostly with touch layer being visible or grainy on white backing. ended up going with dell xps 13 for that reason. wish they had a non-touch version.

Looks like Dell has moved away from the carbon-fiber materials for the XPS now? Must say, I am kind of impressed by the price point. Maybe its because I paid quite a bit more for my XPS when they were newer on the scene.

Nothing against you Lon, but i tuned out once you said everything was soldered on. I'm in the camp where I don't mind the extra 3mm if I can easily upgrade my SSD, RAM, and Wifi card; they can stick a 3mm thicker battery in that space as well.

Dell make lots of different models. I value thin and light and don’t care about upgradability (the CPU and motherboard chipset will be obsolete before I feel the need to upgrade the ancillary bits). To each his own.
@jaredhuang2225
@jaredhuang2225 Год назад
@@alliejr It's more about cost, not necessarily about upgradability. The manufacturers charge you $100 to double the SSD from 256GB to 512GB, when the faster aftermarket 1TB drives are $100; same with RAM, another $100 or $150 to go from 8gb to 16gb when you can do it yourself for $60. I would buy the highest spec processor with the lowest amount of RAM/SSD and save money that way.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England Год назад
@@jaredhuang2225 You need a little understanding of the industry's economics and competition. OEMs reduce the starting price and then make their margins by charging extra for storage and RAM to enable lower base prices to make the demand curve more favourable. This is primary 101 business. For the vast majority that buy the base models, that is a win as they do not need extra RAM and storage.
@hansonic2938
@hansonic2938 Год назад
While it's great to have RAM upgrade options this often means more power consumption and with DDR5 it will likely be more common to see soldered only. It seems HP remains the only large vendor offering RAM slots but at a much higher price point like the Lenovo Thinkpads. But right now you can still pick up some previous Gen HP laptops with 32 GB RAM upgrade option at a much lower price which is on par with this Dell or the M1 Macbook Air. I fear the newer Gens will no longer offer any of that.

In the gaming section you didn’t mention Ryzen at all. Why not? I feel like if you’re looking at an XPS 13 and you want to game a bit, a really good alternative would be something like the ThinkBook 13 with a Ryzen 6800U.

Nice video Lon. After I moved to an M2 MacBook Air, I can tell you, it's an amazing system. Intel's low powered thin and lights can't compare. I remember when Apple MacBook Airs were on Intel, gaming emulation was a no go. Now? Everything is a joy and my MBA M1 doesn't break 70℃. I wonder how Intel can compete with that.

Are you kidding me about the fan? Did you even test the laptop? The CPU fan is at 70-100% when charging through USB C. It doesn’t matter what Fan mode you choose in the BIOS. Even with CPU usage at 5-25% it will make a lot of fan noise. Temps are not even that high, around 45-50 degrees Celsius, yet the fan would almost always be on?
