Dell Venue 8 7000 Review!

Dell has really been stepping up their hardware game lately. This and the 13" XPS are very sexy.

Will there ever be a _great_ Android tablet? I'm talking iPad build quality, HTC front facing speakers, Samsung AMOLED display, Nvidia Tegra X1 SoC, with stock Lollipop. Is that too much to ask for? The Android tablet space has sucked for too long.

I got this video recommended just now, and it blows me away to see such a high quality video from 7 years ago. What's even more crazy is that the videos keep improving to this day!

Apple user here, why do Android devices keep being released at Kitkat while Lollipop has been out for months?

I still think the Nexus 7 (2013) is the best tablet out there, and a lot of that has to do with the screen size. Why has everyone shied away from the 7 inch template that's so perfect for reading, offers full screen coverage for thumbs in gaming and a decent aspect ratio for watching films?

I wish that they made the bezels more symmetrical. I hate asymmetrical bezels. That why I would never get a G3, and the reason that I hated my S3.. And the reason that I love my Note 3.

Is the Nexus 7 (2013) still worth buying or should you just get the Nexus 9? The 7 was obviously a great tablet and still is but basically the argument goes down to cheap price, great hardware and out-of-date software vs. up-to-date software, great hardware and more expensive price. What do you think?

This laptop sucks Chromebooks for life

They should have added front facing speakers on top too, just having them at the bottom is a bit annoying. Having bezel on top is a big plus, improves the user experience to hold a tablet from the top by not touching the display directly. I have two questions, one about this particular tablet and the second one in general. Q1. How does the video calling work on this tablet, do we have to flip the tablet upside down or does the software take into account the camera placement at the bottom and fix the image distortion automatically. Absence of both would leave a stretched image with bottom half and narrow on the top. Q2. Should Google bring back the landscape display feature to tablets. Expanding the KK interface and making it fit for landscape mode works but it doesn't look perfect. What's your view on this?

Could you please review the Audio Technica ATH-m70x

It looks okay, but honestly I'd rather go with the Nvidia Shield Tablet because that has better specs and dual front facing speakers for $300

I like it. Great design. The back facing camera could be an issue with the fingerprinting though. Good attempt Dell, looking forward to the 2.0 version.

Great video man! Wouldn't mind if they put a matching forehead for the chin with another speaker grill so we could have the the full stereo experience.

Sound quality in your videos is always so amazing, and this one is no exception. I have the retina mini and it's pretty good, but the display isn't spectacular. It isn't the full RGB spectrum, and I prefer OLED for the contrast ratio (especially how it handles black). That being said, I too cannot justify the price of this tablet with the negatives that it has. Android tablets in general are not "necessary" though. The iPad mini can play games that even the iPhone 6+ cannot play (which doesn't make sense; Apple could easily downscale the iPad games to fit the 6+). Therefore, the mini has its own app library, as well as the ability to play any up-scaled phone app. A user could own just the mini and get all the "benefits" that an iOS user has... which is really just that some devs only develop on iOS. I find it less compelling for the opposite scenario - owning an Android tablet and an iPhone - other than the price of Android tablets. There isn't a huge gaming library, especially exclusives, that an Android tablet offers. I currently own an iPhone 5, but I'm switching to an Android phone in March (after the conference). Keeping the iPad though so I still have the ability to play stuff like Oceanhorn and Framed.

Thanks for the review. Seems like a very nice tablet from Dell. I was surprised you didn't use the camera a bit more. I thought I heard you say "3 sensors" and expected a bit more info/samples considering the rarity of 3 sensors on a device.

Marques great review. I'm going to give you a thumbs up because it's high quality as you always do, but not because I like the tablet which is subpar in my opinion.

When did you change your studio mointors. I thought the red colour was the main reason. Are these of better sound quality. I heard they are the best for studio mointoring with a clean and balanced sound. Awesome review (Y)

I bought this tablet actually a couple hours before you posted this review. This is my favorite possession now. Lack of casing options and flat surface pick up are the only flaws. most of the rest cons are debateable

Things i would change: -Speakers on both sides for real stereo experience (pls dell, who whatches videos in portrait mode?) -More black in the front (that grey area with the speakers feels awkward and not integrated to the devide) -1mm more for a bigger battey ======= Is the screen properly calibrated? Nand speed?

I really like the stuff Dell has been putting out lately. I think they should do the next Nexus tablet or even phone.

Hey marques, so glad you did this review, I'm thinking about buying a new tablet and the new Venue is looking really good. I used to have an iPad and I'm torn between the Air 2 and this. My friend got the new Air 2 and it's gorgeous and fast, but can't do much if you know what I mean. You can't download lecture slides on that thing and look at them offline. You can't download anything. And without an sd card slot you can't just dump all your movies and tv shows and so on on the tablet. It feels like a great tablet crippled by the locked down iOS. But it does have great battery life and performance. So what do you think, Air 2 or the new Venue. If anyone's got good ideas/suggestions/experience with these tablets please chime in. really torn here :/ Also, having seen your and a dozen other reviews on nexus 9, and between its poor buttons and plastic build, I'm puzzled as to why you would recommend the nexus 9 over this.

I hope MKB sees this. Did you ever use the SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S? I can promise you that it's one of the best if not the best. You might want to look it up. It's a year old, maybe but I'll pick it over any other tablet any day. ..and that includes the ones you mentioned

Good review. It's nice to see Dell coming back into prominence. I'd like to suggest another tablet to review. I recently got a lenovo yoga 2 8 inch. They switched to a better intel processor than what was used in their first iteration. Nice quality screen and interesting functionality with its kickstand. The side has a large battery that doubles as a good hand hold when reading ebooks. The battery life is great. The only downside is the skin but that's easily remedied with a launcher. At just above $200, it's probably one of the best values in 8 inch tablets today... especially if you are interested in media consumption. It's worth s look.

What android keyboard do you use? Nice review as always.

Just gotta say your such a good tech youtuber. Your the one that opened my eyes to phones and all the other choices of phones and tablets instead of apple. Even though they still are a good company.

I'll stick with my shield tab... I'm just so reluctant towards this tablet... Maybe it's because it's there first great Android tab. And I ain't sure they'll keep it up to date.

You can flip the device upside down in portrait mode. This clears up some of those camera ergonomics issues.

Nice music choices, first drones with Deadmau5, and now demo'ing Feed Me & Mord Fustang .... i've seen them all live, and are some of my favs.

I don't know if this is a problem on with my phone or not, but the video was 2-3 seconds behind the audio. It all started with the end of the intro being extended by few seconds and then the difference in audio and video timings continued to be there throughout the video.

You should try to get and review the Tesco Hudl 2. Most people in the UK rated it the best budget tablet.

Which one do you is better? Moto G2 or LG G3S? Both are the same price.

Just a minor correction, you said its it a 16x9 aspect ratio, but with a 2560x1600 resolution, that actually means its a 16x10(8x5), otherwise awesome video as usual

I feel this tablet could be a lot better if they slimmed the bottom bezel added a top bezel, and moved the camera stuff to the top alongside another speaker for stereo separation. Keep the side bezels tho having a super narrow display i could see being handy for gripping the device when its in portrait, giving it that 7" wide body with 8.4" screen. Assuming there isn't any issues that having an intel atom processor creates it looks like a really nice device.

I feel like this tablet would have had some serious potential, if they had put one of the speakers up to the top, had got rid of the black bar at the bottom and then had changed the camera layout. I for sure would have tried getting it then, although perhaps they didn't do it because it simply would have looked exactly like the one m8.

I work in construction and the 3D camera measurements are spot on. if it keeps being correct It will save me time and make me money. also it works great with the seek thermal camera.

you should review the senheiser hd439/449. From what i found, they are really good bang for buck headphones under $100

I agree. They should put another speaker on top, added a stylus (wacom), and put the latest android build on it. Had those, I'd buy one right now.

It's not the first Android device dell has made. I remember the Dell Streak 5 and the Dell Streak 7 - I think it was the first phablet. Or phone with a bigger screen than normal. I had one. It was quite good actually. It came with Android 1.6 Doughnut then was upgraded to 2.0 or 2.2 I can't remember. With 1.6 you could only have it in landscape mode. When 2.0/2 came along it could be orientated. And what was that car racing game that was being played? Looks cool!

Say marques, the name Intel atom was a headache during the netbook era. What are your thoughts on this new atom processors for tablets and smartphones?

As an ex Best Buy employee, they have SUPER reckless warehouse employees (throwing products etc) so I'm not surprised by the damage Marques received in the first unit. Luckily, Best Buy has some good customer service (That's where I worked) and we do what we can to help the customer within reason.
