Holy mother of God. I was watching your XPS review video and thinking if only you would make a Dell XPS 15 vs MSI Prestige 15 video. Half an hour later. BHAMM!! You the man. Full power bother.
While I was looking for some reviews for the XPS 15, I found your channel and your videos and I have to admit that your videos are really well explained AND you took the time to do an excellent comparison on many factors. This is the kind of review that we want! I should be able to find a good laptop to create my motocross videos, thank you. 🙃
Your video reviews are the very best on RU-vid, IMO. I hope you keep making reviews of these "content creator" laptops, since I believe they are potentially interesting for many more people than pure gaming laptops, due to size, weight, heat, battery... Even more so nowadays, with Thunderbolt 3 and e-GPUs that can make these machines very competent gaming laptops. Zenbooks, Spectres, Thinkpads... come to mind. Cheers!
Love my xps 15 2019. I replaced the termal paste and undervolted the cpu, on sustained load it does not drop under 4.2Ghz. for short load time (like 5min) the cpu manages to mantain 4.4-4.6Ghz on all 6 cores. It is overall a really nice and solid machine
I cannot express to what extent you're good at what you do. Incredible video. Straught to the point, clear, concise, evidence-based. Just sensational. You earned a new subscriber. Keep the good job, mate!
Fantastic review, thank you! I'm really consider getting the MSI Prestige 15, the 4k version, I've been saving money to buy it, hope I can get it soon!
I agree on neither. I'm with you on the aero 15. I've just found if I want to use the laptop for work at all, I need a numpad. However, I'm fine sacrificing the pound of weight for better value in the helios 300.
i have the aero 15x v8, and though it's great (ive had it 2 years and its still a champ) its definitely less what i wanted than I thought. my next laptop is likely going to be MSI raider 17 inch, i just hope they slap that 99wh battery in it. but i can wait thanks to solid performance i still have
@@JarrodsTech you should download throttle stop and play with boost settings. got mine to run way better with that than a .145 undervolt (.150 is an instant BSOD, but .145 is solid even under stress test, found that funny)
@@JarrodsTech it is still being delivered. What I like about that MSI, it is actually lighter than Dell XPS and has much better power (RTX 2060) and better cooling solution. I have read a lot of forums on how people improve Dell XPS 15 with repasting, underbolting, attaching extra cooling units on different parts of the hardware inside, e.t.c. Why do I need all these games for $1400? Just for build quality? No, thanks. Aside from that, I should mention that I have been choosing laptop for more than a month. As a result, I read a lot of reviews, forums, watched RU-vid videos. I should admit, you are one of the best laptop reviewer. Your approach is very professional, reviews are detailed with maximum information and minimum useless discussions about personal preferences, feelings e.t.c. Keep going, you are doing a great job!
Please, please, please do a follow up head to head review of the forthcoming MSI Prestige 15 with 11th gen Tiger Lake & GTX 1650Ti MaxQ vs the very latest XPS 15 (9500) both with their 4K screens. Be great to see how the low power high efficiency MSI fares against the higher power but throttled XPS in their updated chassis etc.
I would get dell xps for there costumer service and 4k or more screen they're both amazing and breathtaking laptops , very beautiful . I love glossy screens But! !!!! XPS has a slow response time I would assume that msi would let that happen.
I had the chance to "own" both of the laptops. First I got the MSI prestige 15, which I then returned and got the xps 15 (I ended up liking it more) Dell - pros Display brightness (1080p) Build quality Support (drivers, updates) Comfortable soft carbon fiber finish Very sturdy chassis, very little screen flex Dell - cons Single nvme slot Single USB C port Msi - pros u series cpu (but 6 cores) Extra nvme slot Usb c charging Lighter Smaller chin (below display) Maybe better cooling? Msi - cons The hinge seemed very weak, looked like cheap plastic Worse screen flex than xps When pushing on the deck (even resting my arms below the keyboard), I was unable to click on the touchpad - very irritating (the reason I returned the laptop) Wobbly USB C connection
I've always been a fan of the xps line, very nice machine. I have a C940 to review, I wonder how it compares to that? I must admit, I love 2 in 1 laptops.
i have the prestige 15 the main issue with msi laptops is the hinge and having the metal top cover separate from the thin internal plastic lcd housing. this problem is prevalent in all their laptops so as soon as you see it happening send it in to them for repairs
i have to say .. i never felt the urge to go for a notebook because it felt premium, but once i got to use XPS 15 for some time, i cannot go back to MSI or any other brand. The build quality is so much more SUPREME, i love their "Next business day" service option and overall experience while using it. I used MSI laptops for good 10 years, not anymore.
Lýn I see where you’re coming from. I bought the first XPS 15 infinity edge model, the 9550 at the end of 2015. Since then I’ve had 3 XPS 15 models. The Prestige 15vis my first experience with MSI. Right now I am testing it and the LG Gram 17 2020 version. One thing I don’t like about both of them compared to my XPS 15 7590, is the lack of edge-to-edge glass. Edge-to-edge glass just looks more premium/modern. The MSI Prestige in my opinion, does look very good and is almost a pound lighter than my XPS 15 and just over half pound heavier than the LG Gram 17. Because I’ve been using XPS 15’s for over 4-years now, I am VERY tired of the design and the design elements I always hated, I hate just as much still. The deck of the XPS gets very oily, very fast. The coating of the keys and touch pad, also get very grubby, very fast. No matter how often I clean the deck, touch pad and keyboard, they always go right back to looking dirty in the right light angles. Dell is due to release an all new design soon unless Coronavirus has halted their plans. I am very excited and can’t wait to see it. Supposedly they will have a 15 and 17 XPS sometime this year, hopefully with the same design cues as the new XPS 13. I love the Gram but just wish it had dGPU, edge-to-edge glass and just a little more firmness behind the display. As it is, the rear of the display pushes inward insanely easily as if made out of cardboard. I understand the whole magnesium alloy thing and I know that the laptop can handle drops, flexing and bending right back to form without cracking but flimsiness is like nothing else I’ve ever touched.
I have the XPS 15 on order to be used for audio recording and video editing after watching some bogus reviews that ranked it near to top as a DAW. Unfortunately, the reviewers never tested the DPC latency. Based on the latency specs here, it looks like I'll be sending it back. Thanks for doing a real review instead of the typical bogus review people do selling gear for manufacturers that they actually know nothing about. BTW, anyone know how the Acer Conceptd 3 handles DPC latency? It's looking pretty interesting as a video editing machine.
Depends if you think 10th gen Intel CPUs will actually help or not, otherwise this post might help: jarrods.tech/when-is-the-best-time-to-buy-a-gaming-laptop/
If you can wait, you might want to do so. Have you seen the 2020 XPS 13? Based on everything I've read, including that Dell laptop roadmap that leaked last year - there is no way Dell does not update the XPS 15 with a design much like the new XPS 13. According to the roadmap, we should see an XPS 17 later this year. My guess (and wish) is that we will 100% surely see an all-new XPS 15 or 16 and or 17, very soon. Whatever the case, it will have thinners bezels, most of all the bottom bezel, just like the new XPS 13. It would make no sense to ask consumers to buy into a new XPS 15+ that costs a lot more, has a lot more power yet doesn't have an updated design as good as the XPS 13. My only concern is the WHEN part. Sometime in 2020 but when in 2020 is the question. We have new Intel chips coming later this year so maybe Dell will wait on those. Coronavirus is making issues for the production of chips and hardware so who knows what kind of delays that will bring. If you don't mind buying now and then taking a loss selling it when the new machines come out - then go for it now. For me, I am tired of the XPS design. I have had 3 versions of this design, starting with the first XPS 15 9550. I'm tired of the sandwich body and rubbery deck that picks up too much finger oil. Regardless, the XPS is still the thinnish and lightish premium ultrabook to beat. Not much comes close. So much so that I am probably going to ditch my XPS 15 for the new LG gram 17 and use it until the next XPS comes along. The LG gram 17 is so unique that I could see myself keeping it as a 2nd laptop when the new XPS comes out. Right now Costco has it for $1500 and the MSI Prestige (4K, 1TB SSD + 32GB RAM) for $1700.
Great comparison thanks! I'm leaning more towards the XPS 15 as I find the build quality and design really nice. I have the older 9550 which i have mixed feelings about. I've had issues with it in the past but I find it to be a solid machine with surprising performance (although unfortunately it does heat up a lot) . I feel like dell might have resolved a lot of issues with the new one. I'm also not 100% sure about Dell customer support (although I don't know what MSI is like as I've never dealt with them). Which one of these laptops would you suggest for long hours of digital illustration using Adobe Photoshop CC, and a Wacom Cintiq 22HD? Thanks again
Thanks! Yeah fair enough, the build is definitely nicer. This one got hot for the first few mins, but it caps the power limit to avoid this, so cooler at the expense of performing less. Hmm hard to answer, I guess that's more of a CPU workload so maybe the Prestige 15 with the 4K panel, but for that I would assume better screen would be the priority, so probably Dell with OLED.
@@JarrodsTech Awesome thanks for the response. When it comes to capping the GPU to improve cooling you're talking about heavy work loads such as rendering? or does it slow most processes down? and I'm guessing its not a huge performance dip in the GPU, I imagine its more of a case that it just doesn't use the GPU chip to its max potential. Would a cooling pad help improve thermals and GPU performance. I'm not too worried about getting an OLED panel as I use mainly my Cintiq monitor. thanks again, I really appreciate the help!
Great comparison. I am so reluctant to get an OLED panel after having a few Dell's with OLED panels which have some issues with dimming recovery and brightness adjustment impact to the which reduces picture quality significantly.
Great review and comparision. Will the 4K option panels affect in any or other way to the GPU performance for games or video edition in comparision with the 1080P panel in both laptops, since 4K panel has much more pixels to work with?
Due to msi prestige 15 having 2 tb3 ports taking 4 pcie lanes each it m.2 can only utilize 2 pcie lanes thus lower ssd performance seen on video. Edit: as stated by SuBaRaShii~ m.2 speed were limited by the stock drive itself.
Can someone help me understand this? How does it work out that each m.2 will be left with 2 pcie lanes each, and would that really affect performance? I feel like I'm missing something. I've been mulling over my new laptop purchase for a few months now. I'm almost settled on the MSI Prestige 15 ONLY because of the two thunderbolt 3 ports (which support charging) and two m.2 slots.
It doesn't work like what Hype'd said. It is pure crap to me how he can misinform everyone. The m.2 slot works at x2 because the NVMe Drive itself is a WD SN520 and it is capped as a x2 bus instead of x4. CPU itself in this case Comet Lake, has x16 lanes of PCI-e 3.0, which can be configed x4 + x4 for 2-TB port, x4 for GTX1650 Max-Q, and the last x4 is allocated for the m.2 PCI-e 3.0 direct bus to CPU. With the 2nd m.2 slot, it is SATA/PCI-e 3.0 x4 combo, it is then allocated from PCH (used to be called South Bridge). This PCH itself has x14 lanes of PCI-e 3.0, communicate by a x4-lane PCI-e 3.0 (OPI) to the CPU. Other miscellaneous chipset will ultilize this PCH for configuration such as Wifi, SD Card Reader. x4 or x2 to be doesn't matter much, since you rarely copy that big of a file, or even then after 100GB or so, speed will be limited to
thanks for a great review! You picked really interesting models for comparison this time. As for choosing which one to get, I think that a smaller weight and IPS screen(I'm not sure how well my eyes would feel looking at OLED for 10 hours a day) is in priority for me than better performance. The only concern about MSI is its build quality. I'll wait for your reviews of G14 and comparison with other models, maybe with MSI Prestige 15 or XPS too? And then make up my mind. So far I can't see any contenders with nice GPU, PD charging and lightweight at the same time.
No problem, yeah fair enough. Maybe, not sure what I'll compare the G14 with yet at this stage, depends what options are available at the time. Both of these are below it in terms of GPU so doesn't really seem fair.
@@JarrodsTech yeah, that sounds as a tough choice. But maybe you'd be able to find some interesting model to compare it against to, maybe I've missed something in terms of weight and performance.
I’d choose strictly on build quality and 4K matte screen. Next the thermals. I think I’d prefer the i7 10th gen on a Dell. I think prices should taper down on the Dell when 10 gen. CPU comes out later this month or next. But what I’m really clamoring for is the AMD cpu 15, 16 size. Don’t like 14 in.
I've narrowed my choice to 3 laptops: Dell XPS in this video, Macbook Pro 16', Blade 15 all 2400$ to 2600$. With the blade i have a 9750H and a 1660Ti and 144hz with the dell it's only a 1650 but it's the cheapest of the bunch, With the 16' macbook pro i I'll have the i9 9980HK and 5500M so thats between the 1650 and the 1660. Really in a tough spot here.
The 1650 in the Dell for same money is rough if you need GPU performance given the 1660 Ti does 50% better there. I guess at that point depends more on whether you want Mac OS or a Blade which a lot of people seem to say don't last (no idea how accurate that is as I've never personally had one for long term testing, that said if you watch Louis Rossman Apple products aren't exactly known for their impressive design choices either).
as usual a very high end performance of you with no thermal throttling, but i am kind of confused cause i am thinking of buying the hp omen 17 and i really wish that you make a video about it
The second M.2 slot is what makes the Prestige the winner for me. Although I noticed in your video it looks like a power cable is running over the slot. How would that work when adding a new drive, would the cable run over or under the drive?
im on it too, msi is the cheapest, for the same config there is the blade 13 and the asus zenbook but there are so overpriced, the dell at +2000 is a joke
@@louiscrasher i bought the msi 3 weeks ago. awesome notebook. BUT the display broke after 2 weeks. all f up. so i got money back and wait now for new version. which ist with 11th gen tiger chip. and buy that version
Jarrod, do you think while playing games like Battlefield V or COD: Modern Warfare, it (Prestige 15) will reach its temperature limits of 80 C? or will it be slightly cooler around only 70? as its not as stressful as your stress test?
@Jarrods'sTech, I was wondering if you Undervolt both the CPU & GPU, would the laptop do better in the test? Because I've seen some people say that Undervolting the GPU makes the laptop usable in games with reasonable FPS and stutter a lot less, so if you can make an update video on Undervolting the GPU & CPU and if this helps the gaming results because of im really interested in the laptop. Thanks
It's really interesting the tricks MSI pulled to get this level of CPU performance. If you go to Intel ARK and look at the specifications of the i7-10710U, you'll find that it's rated for 15W with a configurable TDPup of merely 25W. On the P15 though, if you are plugged in and have performance mode selected, you can actually run the CPU at a whopping 45-50W sustained, which is just incredible. Not sure how much binning MSI had to do to ensure stability. I am able to hit 3.9G on all 6 cores with a 100mV undervolt. So in some sense this "U" postfix is a bit misleading really, especially given that it's a 10th gen. 6c12t chip. I'm not surprised at all that it absolutely smashed the 9th gen. 4c8t H chip in performance.
EGPU performance comparison at the end of this would have made this video an 11/10. Wonder if the XPS CPU would still be as hamstrung without the internal GPU power/thermals. Great video though keep it up
EGPUs are worthless. no idea why people keep pushing them. just buy a pc, its cheaper, and you'll be equally attached to a wall. or a better laptop to start with, then you'll have the better performance and not have to be plugged in.
Brad Haines I wouldn’t recommend them to everyone and it’s certainly a niche that really only suits 1% of people. I just happen to be in that 1% and interested in the outcome. I’m sure people watch these videos for more then just performance vs dollar and purchase advice. He has already showed the EGPU performance on a previous video for the MSI so I think the comparison would be interesting even if it was just a 30 second graph of clocks and frames.
Jarrod'sTech I don’t think you had any reference to EGPU in the original XPS review so that would make sense. Guessing the XPS would still have CPU throttling issue regardless so MSI would edge it out
Hi Jarrod! I'm still confused which one I should buy. In my country they are only 270 dollars different. Which one do you think is better for graphic design and games (I like playing games but not often)? Thank you 😊
There are some things I wish you would have included in your review. The MSI looks great in all the press photos but there are some really annoying cosmetic issues that don't get talked about very often. The entire hinge housing is plastic. The rear sections where the vents are - look very cheap. Add insult to injury, the color of that cheap plastic hinge housing is a different color than the rest of the unit. I just don't understand how they let that pass. The guys who started MSI, used to be part of Vaio when Sony owned it. Once upon a time, in the late 90s and early 2000s, Sony Vaio had some of the best looking laptops in the world........
@@JarrodsTechnobody ever covers everything. "For some reason the hdmi port is limited to 30hz on a 4k display. Disappointing given the specs for this machine. Hardware: 1. Well built but has the hinge area is all cheap plastic. I wished they would have gone for a full metal build. 2. USB ports could go in deeper. Cables and dongles stick out a bit. 3. Not ultralight as they claim but overall its a light laptop for a 15 inch Software: 1. Has some bloatware which is annoying. 2. Creator center has to be running for the top keyboard row to work. When i login it takes a while for it to start up. For a programs thats needed for the hardware to work properly it should start up instantly. I tried to register online and it kept giving me an error. I don't know if its just because the laptop is so new the site doesn't support it yet but i couldn't figure how how to report this to msi either. Their support site is horrible!" An Amazon review www.amazon.com/MSI-Prestige-15-A10SC-010-Professional/dp/B07WC94Y2N/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=MSI+Prestige+15&qid=1582965656&sr=8-3
Just a little suggestion: why don't you add your tests/opinions regarding the performance of these laptops in softwares like AUTOCAD, Revit, or Etabs. There's a set of customer that use these laptops for that purpose.
Because I have no experience with any of those tools, so I'd just be talking shit. I wish I knew about them, but I don't. If you have any information for getting started with understanding them or know how I can compare performance with them, I'm all ears.
Best for Music Production? (composer, lots of heavy VSTs, effects, etc.) I'm so torn between both, for a long time the XPS 15 was my dream but now that I'm getting ready to purchase I'm not sure. I want it mainly as a music production laptop (composer music student) so when I read about the latency issues with the XPS it kinda disheartened me. Is the Prestige better for that? No audio latency issues?
What do you suggest? 1. Asus Zephyrus GA502DU with Ryzen 7 and 6GB 1660Ti MaxQ. 2. Lenovo Y540 i5 9th Gen and 4GB 1650. 3. Asus ROG STRIX G with i7 9th Gen and 4GB 1650. All have 8GB RAM except the Zephyrus. A reply would be my appreciated. Thank you very much. And love your videos. Keep it up.☺️🥰
@@JarrodsTech I know, and I appreciate that. I just think it would be really helpful for side by side comparisons like this one. Keep up the good work!
I got 5000 USD. Photo editing and 4k Video editing is what I mainly do with occasionally playing a game such as COD. Which laptop is going to be the best without having my legs burned
I guess as I don't actually measure temps on the bottom under load I can't really answer. Generally that's less recommended due to legs blocking air intakes. For that money I'd get OLED, so probably the Aero 15 fur to better specs than the xps
got the 32 gb dell xps 15 model your got my self connected to a 75 inch 4k tv with its own 4k screen got the I core 9 version myself I also set it to screen two then its just on the 4k tv most of the time
Hey Jarrod which one do you think will be good for me between XPS 15 and Surface Laptop 2? I'm a competitive csgo player but since I'll be living outside Asia I won't be able to play with my team so gaming doesn't matter. I'll need laptop for my University. Thank you for your time 😊
Honestly I've never tested the Surface laptop so I'd just be guessing completely, I really don't know much about it :( CS:GO depends almost entirely on CPU power, so which ever will clock higher, that said it will probably run ok on either.
When comparing different series of CPU like H & U, the main thing that you need to check thermalthrotel and long time performance, in short runs both those processors are +/- similar. So this dose not really give the full picture.
Does the keyboard backlight on the Prestige turn off after some time when not in use? I saw the XPS exhibit this behaviour at 7:30 and have noticed that both the Lenovo C940 and new HP Spectre have the same feature. While it might save power, I'd rather be able to see my keyboard in the dark at all times
I'm interested in the MSI Prestige 15. In Australia JBHiFi just had it on sale for $2150 but unfortunately, it's gone back up to $2699. :( The Dell XPS 15 would be similarly priced except they don't seem to offer the same specced device, there's a 1080p 8gb ram version for $2378 and then it jumps up to 4k 16gb for $3143. Ridiculous.
Hi, I'm a student with a €1500 budget, I need a fast PC for university, I use office and internet and some medical programs. I use it also for streaming and for socials. Do you think msi is a good idea or you suggest better options?
Is it good for programs like lumion or twinmotion?? I’m an se uso I will be using cad and such. I think msi is the perfect choice. But I would love to know if I’m right?
I think the spec and design are not suitable for those program, check the Requirements spec, it's better to get a gaming or workstation laptop for better spec and cooling
thank you very much for your review. it helped a lot, but i have a question actually advice. I am a food photographer and i need powerful laptop to edit my photos using lightroom and photoshop sometimes in location and at the same time use it tethered in location during photoshoot. i know that MSI 15 4K screen will be more color accurate, but i was thinking to buy 1080P screen sacrificing just a little color accuracy, but save some money and use this saved money and add just a little more and buy big screen 4K monitor to be able edit my photos more comfortable in my office, so in this case i will have reasonable powerful good accuracy color laptop and 4K monitor, in any time i will connect my laptop using thunderbolt to my monitor and edit it. what will you advice should i do this way or buy MSI 15 4K variant??? please help me .
If you're going to do the majority of editing on a larger screen at home/in the office or where ever, then yes I think it makes sense just to get the 1080p laptop screen and a good larger 4K panel. If you think you might travel and not have the big 4K screen though and need to edit on location then might be worth going for the 4K laptop screen.
After first viewing I think I'm leaning xps for the gpu but, I need to watch again. (yay multitask viewing not hearing all) I'm still on 1080 so I see little benefit in 4k I can't really game on.
Fair enough, 4K with these machines is more for better brightness and colour gamut, that's how I see it anyway, I don't care about the actual resolution of 4K at 15"
Is there any chance that you kindly compare this xps with the gigabyte aero OLED with the same specs? As I can't decide which one to get... That would be great! Thanks in advance!
@@JarrodsTech I mean the gigabyte aero 15 with GTX 1660ti or 2070 which you both had in previous tests.... or do you have to send the machines back after your tests😬😉
So, comparing Italian prices, Dell xps fullhd 8Gb is 1479euro (easy a cheap upgrade), 16 gb 1559euro. Msi with 16gb ram is 1399. That means 160 euro less than the same xps. With these prices, would you opt for the msi? And 1 more question please.. does the ram comes with 2 or 1 module with the msi 16? Thanks
@@JarrodsTech you are right but since I'm doing some 3D modelling with 3ds max (gpu) and rendering with vray (cpu or cpu+gpu) i really don't know which one could be better.. probably the cheaper one ahahah
@@JarrodsTech It is a budget convertible 2 in 1 laptop. 16gb ram, 500gb ssd, mx230 gpu and core i5-8265u for around 700-800$. The display has good quality, but the brightness is not the best. Solid build quality with some accurate touch display.
Just watched your 9th gen vs 10th gen vid where the 10710u is beating the 9750H in video export etc.... but in this vid its like 25% slower than Helios 300 and other 9750H machines ?? What am I missing?
Probably the GPU difference, 1650 with the Prestige 15 and 1660 Ti with the Helios 300, also the Helios is undervolted out of the box which boosts CPU performance.
I have 1, it is great for $800. Runs cool, I undervolted 130, never gets above 80C. Plays Assassins Creed Odyssey 1080P on high at 60FPS. Great machine, size, keyboard.
Define "proper battery test". I have done a test that is easy to replicate. Sorry, but I am not going to sit at a machine for 10 hours and pretend I know how to program 😉 the goal isn't to show you what battery life to expect in what ever scenario you plan on using it for, it's just not feasible to do that for everything everyone wants. The goal was to do the same test on both machines to see the differences between them, and that has been achieved.
@@JarrodsTech for example you have 100%, unplug the laptop, put a movie in the background and record, fast forward to the end and show us what battery life you have after that, then maybe put some youtube videos, open in the background some apss, etc
I have a dell XPS 15 7590 personally and I undervolted by -1.4 volts and repasted the cpu and gpu it wasn’t very hard and only cost 10 dollars and some spare time. As a result, my cinebench score was 2656 on multi core which is very comparable and I find the build quality to be much better than the prestige 15
Nice, but is that just from 1 run? First test will always be higher than the rest as it takes time for heatsoak to kick in plus you'll probably be running within the PL2 window for most of the test, that's why I take an average of 5 runs.
