I love the XPS line! Last year I got the XPS 15 9510 with the i9 11th Gen processor, RTX 3050ti, 32GB Ram and 1TB Storage. I use it for work as a Designer and 3D Artist. I decided to upgrade it by replacing the 32GB Ram with 64GB Ram and I purchased a Sonnet eGPU 750 Breakaway Box and added in a RTX 3070ti Graphics Card a few months ago. I know it’s not as powerful as a desktop with similar specs due to the thunderbolt 3 connection. But, I need the mobility of a laptop for my job but the performance of a desktop when docked at home and didnt want to go out an purchase yet another PC and have to work from multiple devices. The performance is absolutely amazing and the setup works perfectly for my situation!
I think the recommended spec should depend on whether you feel comfortable opening it up and doing upgrades yourself. If you do, order the 4K screen and 3060 video with the smallest hard drive and least amount of memory. You can upgrade those two items yourself for 1/2 the cost of what Dell is going to charge you.
Bought this machine. 35 days later, the battery's life was less than 3 hours (light use / browsing only!). The battery has been replaced but the problem persists. I am having a hard time to return it. Instead, Dell is offering to replace my new laptop for a refurbished one. Also, customers are not being able to post online product reviews on Dell's website. Wondering why this machine gets all these good reviews from these "specialists"... Is it a paid review???
The main problems with these is heat. Cooling the CPU and GPU is really hard and Intel CPU are known for generating heat. that destroys the battery. If you can't get battery life out of these better go for a gaming one since you will get double the performance for the same price
@@MT-sk1ln@MT-sk1ln bro he said he was just browsing. Not graphics intensive tasks. And I don't thing light usage like browsing requires lotsss of battery. And also its Intel which is the issue I guess.
I did some testing across multiple laptops, this has less to do with intel but more so with the Laptop manufacturer, my current Laptop has a power hungry i7 with a 3070ti and a mini led screen on top, with throttlestop I managed to get it down to 15W combined CPU and GPU usage and yet the huge battery only lasts 3 hours. I forced this Laptop and a smaller Laptop with no GPU and an i5 to run at 15W and the smaller laptop, with a smaller battery had 10 hours battery. It’s the motherboards using upwards of 20W regardless of task and CPU. The manufacturers do not spend a single dime on trying to make their boards consume less because they know intel can take the blame.
Honestly a good 720 webcam is probably better quality than an ok 1080 webcam, and in laptops most 1080 cams are not even ok even on the new MacBook Pro’s the physics of 1080p out of a barely 3-6mm wide sensor catches up fast.
If you really care for the webcam image, then you are more likely to have better results with a dedicated webcam, since the laptop ones usually all suck (some more than others).
My XPS 17 9720, fully laid out, had an annoying “popping sound” problem that occurred randomly every few minutes. I noticed it immediately when I first got it and started using it. Rather disheartening to have this happening right out of the box. A huge problem if you are trying to record or edit videos for distribution. Needless to say, I spent weeks trying to resolve this issue. Dell support had no info about this problem on their website. Others reported the same problem but offered no real solution. TLDR - the culprit and solution, for me, was in the “Realtek SoundWire HW Audio Codec Device Drivers”. There are 4 identical entries listed under Device Manager. I disabled all but the first and the popping stopped. The sound works just fine with the Intel and NVIDIA drivers that are also installed by default.
$3500+ for RTX3060, i9? That feels like a scam... Never buy high tier Dell laptops and desktops... Overpriced jokes.. P.S. Razer Blade 17 - 4K 144Hz with i9-12900H, RTX3080Ti, 32GB RAM costs $4000 pounds in my country.
Though I agree, I like to tell myself the extra money is for the premium build quality of aluminum and carbon fibre and those silm bezels and the overall professional looking device.... Which u also get in the macbook pro
Pay $1000 more you will get a MSI GS with 3080, bulkier, heavier, worse speakers. If you really into high end laptops, you will see they ain’t that overprice compare to each other (not compare to desktops and lower end products).
@@thaibinh1909 Nah, Dell's builds just aren't good. If you checkout their XPS Desktop, the casing is so small that the RTX3060 suffers throttling even under average load due to bad cooling. As for laptop, i rather go for Legion, Razer or MacBook, depending whether it is for gaming or design. The XPS is like stuck in the middle. If you use for gaming, the 4K resolution is almost useless for a RTX3060, and it costs $3500+? For design and rendering, especially video editing, Macbook is currently winning the race. So at least for me, the XPS is overpriced for that kind of specs... Btw, i assume most people buying 17' inch are constantly on the move? Because that size isn't suitable to carry around daily..
The money Apple saved from not giving it to Intel, turned out to be great choice. Lots of things got updated. If Apple still uses Intel, I would have switched back to Windows with Dell and Aero 16/17 2022 as my top choice.
Dells hinges are bad, i have seen about 5 where I had to replace the palmrest. Glueing such an expensive laptop doesn't not seem appropriate. £150 to repair. One laptop went twice.
Yeah it was a good trade, Removed all the I series and replaced with the M which is a HUGE upgrade over the best thing Intel can push right now Dell though, their frames are rather cheap with just plug and play parts, same business model since day one
Thought you were going somewhere with your comment but then I’m like nah. Tbh it’s good apple didn’t give apple more money which lead to more competition and intel not getting comfortable with specs. I use apple but honestly here cause I wanna switch
I think this year’s model’s are fine, but next year is where it’ll be redesigned completely, more to compete with other laptops with higher refresh screens, better cooling etc. And of course design cues from the XPS 13 Plus. This year is merely a spec bump to 12th Gen, while at the same time having a slower clocked GPU both on the 15 and 17. Next year will have all the upgrades
@@9snaga I've seen reviews about the XPS 15 which can reach 7-8 hours with mixed-use, I don't really know about the 17 but I'm pretty sure it could hit 7 hours (great in my opinion).
I'd waffled between the 15 and the 17 for a month, but ended up picking the 17, and now I'm scared of having been so close to picking the 15. It's not too large at all. Extremely powerful. Spec'ed with 32 GB RAM, 1 TB disk, and I added a second 4 TB m.2 disk. I'm now in the process of retiring my desktop and will only have this one with a dock.
People complain about no OLED but my understanding is no manufacturer has OLED in the 17 inch space. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also it's not a proper gaming laptop so a higher refresh rate is not as critical.
Two SKUs of the Dell 'New XPS 17' 9730 are now showing on the Dell UK site this morning. The default specs shown are both i9 13900H CPU, Windows 11 Home, 32GB RAM, 1TB drive and 4K screen. £3499.01 with a 4070 GPU and an eye-watering £3999.00 with a 4080...ouch!! A lot of money when the case, camera and wi-fi have not been updated. Makes some of the other brands look like good value.
I love 17in laptops and been using them since 2009. Just got my 9720 last month with the I7, RTX 3050, and 4k screen. Added a second SSD myself and it wasn't too hard to do (casing was tough to get open but I took my time). I have to say I'm really enjoying this PC. The screen is gorgeous and the speed is great (used a 2019 Inspiron with an i5 before that can't even keep up with a 9720). I'm definitely holding on to this for a while.
This device should have 120Hz or at least 90Hz refresh rate. That would be a critical point to compare with other manufacturers. I really love Dell XPS, but it still has some gaps that make it not perfect.
It is ridiculous, they put in a 4k screen that makes absolutely no sense, especially on the 13inch variant, but completely fail to even offer a single laptop with a higher refresh rate. At this point it is easier to find a phone with that feature for the price of 300 dollars, while a 2k laptop can't offer anything above 60hz. 2022............
@@DashieTM Actually, some people need the XPS' 4k screen for their type of work. XPS is designed for creators. Yes, I would have loved to have high refresh, definitely not this year though.
I always looked into the XPS line of "big" laptops (15/17) and last year I've bought a XPS15 9510. My esperience is not so great as every major reviewer says. The laptop looks really good, the screen is fantastic but the laptop is really expensive for the ammout of issues it has. The speakers are one of the most loved carateristics of this line of notebooks, they are very lound BUT at certain frequencies they resonate with the keyboard creating a buzzing noise that destroys the experience. The webcam is completely trash (less than 720p on a 2k laptop... Dell are you serious?!) The cooling is undersized for the CPU+GPU. the laptop cannot sustain the level of performance it targets. Battery life is meh... 6h at best watching youtube using Edge. I really don't understand why reviewes are shilling these XPSs so much...
I can fully agree on that. My dad bought an XPS 15 9570 about 3 or so years ago, and it's not a great experience. I already had to replace the right speaker because the original one started to rattle pretty bad, even at very low volume, and you barely could understand anything. And even though I've cleaned the laptop from inside, the fans start going full blast while just web browsing sometimes.
@@ocfrankbasically every review is positive and they recomend the xps line. Yeah there are 10s of "the webcam is poopoo" or "the price is high" but I never heard anyone complaining about the buzzing speakers issue (is a known issue across the line since the 9500)
@@ThomasS17 "And even though I've cleaned the laptop from inside, the fans start going full blast while just web browsing sometimes." Repasting my 7590 helped a lot, and it was relatively simple to do.
It is one of the reasons I do not want to go MacBook, even though the laptop if very good. Next day you start paying money for extensions just to add basic functionalities + adding one more device, in the end getting me stuck in their walled garden.
@@FlorinArjocu yep, I’ve totally bought myself into the walled garden and while I’d prefer a windows laptop, I’d have to replace so much other equipment that it wouldn’t make sense.
@@Piketom1 you made the right choice; trust!! Apple ecosystem is impeccable!! this coming from a windows & android enthusiast for over 20 years. I made transition to Apple ecosystem 5 years ago no regrets don’t miss windows at all
I purchased a XPS 17 in April 2022 to replace an eleven year old XPS 15. My major problem with it has been several occurrences of lifting the lid and the screen not turning on. The keyboard will light up but the screen is black. I’ve spent several hours on support assist trying to get it fixed. It’s an intermittent problem which makes it harder to diagnose, but it’s still very frustrating. I rarely use the webcam but when I do the picture quality is pitiful.
Yes! Bought one yesterday with i7, 3060 and 4k screen. After months of consideration it was a clear choice fot me. The screen puts most other laptops to shame, and its build quality, along with minimalist, classic looks appeal to me. I also got it substantially discounted on the Dell site this week which helps!
I have a question if someone can answer...Do you think its better off waiting until 2023 to see if there's any new major upgrades compared to the 2022 model?
When it comes to appearance the Dell XPS line trumps all other laptops. The only laptops on the market in my opinion that look better than the Dell XPS are the HP Envy laptops and the HP Spectre laptops.
Finally, you posted; I had been waiting for this review to complete my purchase, but the wait was killing me, so I booked it only 2 days ago. I booked the new XPS 17 with i7-12 gen/3050/16GB/512ssd/non-touch (Should I go with 3060, as you suggest?) and should I also get the i9? My use case includes a lot of programming and research, as well as some video and photo editing. I am not a gamer. I considered getting a MacBook Pro 16, but the only reason I went with the XPS over the MBP 16 is that I require a secondary operating system (Ubuntu), which is not doable on a Mac (I guess). Also, if I require a lightweight, high-performance laptop, do you have any other suggestions for me outside the XPS? @The Tech Chap
Specs are good enough for what you do. Maybe go for 32 gig if you're into professional quality video editing. I wouldn't go for a 3060 unless you're a gamer, which you aren't. Storage could potentially be a problem if you're not keen on using the expendable variant later.
Can u plz make a comparion with the MacBook Pro M1 Max? I am pretty interested in that.. would be really grateful, if u really do that… Which MacBook Pro (16“, 2021) do u have - with which specifications?
I recommend to buy 2022 model because of Intel 12th gen cpus. You didn't mention that 12th gen cpu contains effiency and performance cores, so that's why it's much better choise. Never ever choose i9 to laptop, it's not made for that and it will throttle no matter what you do. Throttlet i9 has the same performance as the i7, but consumes much more power and is shorter-lived because it is so hot all the time. Also DDR5 support means that it's much more "future-proof". If batterylife is important 12th is made for that and if you don't need nvidia gpu while on battery, you should disable it. I disable my dgpu when I'm in school so I get like 2-3,5hrs more batterylife. XPS is perfect balance between performance, batterylife and mobility.
What the XPS 17 really needs is more power! Paying for a 3060 to just feed it 60W is such a WASTE! 130W for a PREMIUM 17 inch laptop is simply not enough… Shit the smaller 16 MBP has a 140W power brick!
@@mattfm101 It runs hot because it has Intel... If it was an AMD laptop, especially with a Ryzen 5500U, 5600U, or 5700U, heat wouldn't be an issue. That's why I avoid Dell XPS... My Lenovo Ideapad 5 Pro with a Ryzen 5600U, stays cool and quiet when doing light tasks.
@@adriatorres2918 Its the first new laptop I've bought, it's not a bad laptop it just really isn't an upgrade over the 9510 and to me just isn't worth the money. I was more happy with the 2nd hand 8th gen 13inch xps I had bought before it.
As an amateur photographer (and now drone owner) who wants to make a big leap from an old HP 13" with built-in graphics card, matte protector over a glossy mirror like FHD screen, how do the Dell UHD screens actually work with the anti reflective coating? Do you see yourself and surroundings or are they really useable for editing photos in photoshop (dodge and burn) and lightroom tweaks. i'll also be learning video editing from the drone I'm beginning to use. I'd be using a laptop indoors, not outside. Its fine reviewing device features, but an actual example of environments and usability would save many of use a huge wad of money. I don't know whether to jump on to a XPS 15 FHD/UHD or 17 FHD/UHD or a separate FHD/UDH monitor... advice in a video would be fantastic.
I took the plunge and bought an 11th gen 17" uhd. Amazing screen. Yes it reflects but in most lighting conditions with something to look at (desktop wallpaper, image in photoshop) reflections are hardly noticed. Colour rendition is superb.
I'm trusting the XPS lineup. I probably don't need that good a laptop for my next purchase, as I depend mostly on a desktop now, but my XPS 15 has lasted me 6 years now, still performs decently enough, and seems to just keep holding up very well (although I naturally have installed a new battery after 5 years). Moreover, Dell's customer service was excelent in the beginning when I needed to get the screen replaced.
Thanks mate, I was going to buy the XPS 17", but bought the Dell G7-17, because it was on sale. Big mistake, it keeps crashing and the WiFi keeps dropping out, so now I'm looking at buying the XPS 17". Lesson learnt.
Why do you think an i7 is better here than an i9? I configured one and should order tomorrow, I would like this advice as it is the same price i7 vs i9 CPU, and in this case unless it is a power hog or an oven, the i9 might sound ok. I also have an XPS15 as an option, not sure also if I should go XPS15 or XPS17. What would you advice me to do?
Hey Tom since you've had both which do you think is the better laptop between the Rog Flow 16 and upcoming Vivobook 16x pro with 120hz olez and a 3070ti? Thank you. Can you do a comparison video if possible?
The last time I used a Macbook in 2016, it sucked for media consumption. When I connect an external TV along with 2.1 soundbar/speakers to watch 5.1 movie, the dialogues were so silent and barely audible. Plus it doesn't matter if its XDR or ProMotion display if you can't enjoy locally stored 4k dolby vision movies. Windows on the other hand is superb for media. Dolby Access takes care of 5.1 audio in 2.1 speakers/soundbars and the dialogues become clear and loud. Dolby Vision & HEVC extensions let you play Dolby Vision movies without any fuss. Windows 10 1909 & above including windows 11 is a God-send for us media consumers.
Hi Tech Chap, I have to take a new laptop, thinking about Dell XPS 17 & MacBook Pro 16. Never used a Mac b4, but impressed by its battery efficiency, build quality, 120Hz display, webcam, speakers… If it’s better to opt MBP 16, should i wait for MBP with M2 chips ? Pls suggest…
PSA: I recently upgraded my XPS 9720 with a RAID 0 configuration using a second OEM 1TB M.2 (from CDW for $100 ). Oh my, read/write sports 13,400 and 10,600 mb/s using Crystal Mark bench test. Everything loads blazing fast. Best $100 upgrade.
I like all of these new 12th gen laptops, but if you wanna be creative on your computer, and don't care about gaming on it, The MBP 16" fills in some of the shortcomings of the XPS 17". I like that the Windows laptops are more capable gaming devices, but I have a gaming PC and don't care much about gaming on a laptop.
Looks wonderful but, based on my experience of the XPS 9500 (10th gen i7, UHD+, 16G Ram), I'm also glad that I went with the 16" M1 Pro (base). Headache free, literally (no fan noise) and qc-wise. Every time I log back onto my XPS from the M1 Pro, I'm reminded of this. Still, the 17" XPS looks good, if a little overpriced for my needs.
Will say the xps laptops have the best look & build quality in terms of its metal exterior. If the macs had that, look out but the xps are still the most aesthetically pleasing laptops imo.
@@mopnem I'm very minimalist. I have an XPS 9500 and 16" M1 Pro. They're both beautiful but I love the look of my M1 Pro, which doesn't sacrifice form to function (still nice even if a little chunky which helps performance-wise). I find my XPS sacrifices function to form (i.e., good ventilation). I love curvy. The XPS has sharp lines, still beautiful though. In sum, they're comparable but I prefer my MacBook Pro.
Hey Tom, Can you check again because In my XPS 17 9720 it has WIFI 6E AX211 160Mhz, i9, RTX 3060, 32 gb Ram, 2TB ssd. Checked in Task manager> performance > Wi-Fi on tope right corner it says Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160MHZ 5th replacement from dell. First was bought in Sep 2020.
"Hopefully that's a sight of things to come" (RE: XPS 13 plus) I could not be more terrified for the future of the XPS line than one where none of its laptops have keys or 3.5mm audio jack.
So the 2023 Dell XPS 17 9730 has shown up on their US site. 13th Gen processors and 4070/4080 graphics cards but god damn it, the webcam is still 720p, the wi-fi card is still only 6 and the case lacks any of the cutting edge features from the XPS 13 Plus. The price increase looks significant for a similar spec machine! What the hell were the XPS design team doing during the last 12 months?!?
After all this time the webcam is still 720p. If Dell didn't focus on such thin bezels they could've built-in a 1080p webcam. It's sad how people will happily pay $$$$ for this laptop with a 720p camera but the world goes berserk if Apple doesn't put a 1080p webcam in their MacBooks, and when they did add one people complain about the notch. SMH
Apple could've added FaceID in that giant notch easily, but they have decided to stick with fingerprint authentication only 🤷🏻♂️. Plus they now have continuity feature, which really makes the notch unnecessary.
I m really happy with my M1 MacBook Pro Base model. Never needed more performance than this model. Also, I felt tired of Windows. I shifted from Dell XPS 15 2012 model.
Mac is out since M1/M2 doesn't give game access, plus I like discrete GPUs.. Plus I've had two brick on me due to overheating with their low noise fans (2007 and 2011... I've since given up on the brand). Looking at closeouts on 2022 models now; thanks for the review! Off to check out the Zenbook pro 16!
i have dell cori 7 5 generation touch liptop 32gb ram 256 ssd hardisk 2gb geforce 840 graphics and doing work normal for beginer students also working for online jobs
Did you do a performance comparison of the 15 and 17? I've heard there's a ton of throttling on the 15 because of the heat pipes on 15 vs vapor core in 17.
I tried the macbook m1 14 pro, loved the laptop but didnt like mac os...I still prefer windows and how it deals with files and having full control over everything ...Im seriously considering the xps 17 for a home only laptop
Now they have a 13 gen laptop, but I don’t really understand how much is difference between the gen 12, gen 13 and is touch screen worth on this laptop ?
I have tge XPS 17. I have had it 18 months. I would not recommond this laptop! The track pad is large but not very responsive at all I would rate the trackpad a 5/10. Constant driver issues, this has been since the begining. The touch screen often glitches, when searching this online this seems to be a common issue. Now the touch screen function I have turned off. The sound driver frequently stops working so have to often restart. Often get blue screen. Internet connection not as good as my other laptops. Overal I would rate it a 6/10 I would not buy this laptop again. I have a HP elite book 1030 G4 I use for work and personal everyday. It trumps this laptop
Would really be nice to see Dell add a number pad onto the larger XPS models, and at the very least the 17. If I'm getting a laptop this big, I would like to have the number pad.
I think that the Dell XPS 15 and 17 should never get the num pad, they are contenders for being the best windows laptops and have one of the best speakers, a num pad would degrade the symmetry of the touchpad, and results in smaller speakers. If you want a laptop that has a num pad, you should look elsewhere as there are some great laptops with num pads but definitely not fit for the XPS.
