This is a fairly detailed complete teardown, features overview, and upgrade tips and tricks video for the XPS 8700.
I am more than happy to answer questions and give advice, but I find that a lot of times I do have to do some research to do so, so if you want tech support please do me the favor of giving me a sub and watching the whole video thru.
Anyone trying to figure out why your GTX 960, GTX 970, or GTX 980 or other video card does not output video, you need to update the bios, there is a very updated bios dated 2018, I would recommend it as your first troubleshooting step

I upgraded my PSU to a very nice EVGA 650 G3! What a gem of a power supply. It is a modular unit so I can minimize the amount of extra wires hanging in the tight case!

I wanted to say thank you for posting this video. I'm not a hardcore gamer and if I were I wouldn't have this XPS 8700 but I bought Snowrunner and found I needed to upgrade plus wanted to extend the life of the PC for a couple more years. Stock system was an i7-4770 w/8GB ram and default video card. Here is what I upgraded with: 1) 620w Seasonic S12 II Bronze 2) Nvidia GTX 1660 Super 3) 16GB Corsair Vengeance memory (24GB total) 4) Noctua 92mm fan at front of case and Noctua 92mm fan at back of case. 4) Cooler Master Hyper T2 cpu cooling fan converted from plastic push pins to drive screws 5) Removed two slots on the back for more airflow 6) And installed a single SSD drive. 7) Oh and I had to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version. CPU temps went from 72*-77* when gaming to 60*-64*. Everything fit perfectly, nothing had to be modified and I never had to pull out my motherboard.

i7- 4790 was my CPU when originally purchased (AUG 2013) so it does work. It has been a trusty solid pc with a few upgrades from an SSD, Corsair PSU, additional memory and GTX 1070. So far so good. I recently found a deal on a Radeon 5700 and it fits fine just too bad AMD really does have some glitchy drivers that seem to cause this old pc to have problems(black screen/sys shutdowns) with certain apps and games. So back to my old 1070. Oh well. So far it runs newer games on MID settings such as DIV2, High on PUBG and all basic games just fine.

The 8700 is in face an even more solid machine than it is given credit for, and, since most people view them as "just some crappy old Dell" you can sometimes find a heck of a deal on them as well.

One thing of note. I had some initial trouble after I installed a 1650 Super with the default PSU. The system would randomly restart even though it should have had enough wattage to support it. Found out I had to go into the windows and nvidia power settings and set them to max performance for it to work and now it's perfectly fine.

I know you have had this up for a while, I'm upgrading my Dell XPS 8700 I really found your demonstration very helpful! I'm swapping out the power supply now, but am interested that you mention that it may not need to be replaced/upgraded. I'm installing the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 and felt the Dell 460W power supply wouldn't cope with it? Do you think I can get away with just upgrading the plug to the 8-pin and not the entire unit? I was considering the Corsair CX-M Series CX750M. Any thoughts on that? Thanks, and I wish you all the best.

Hi, new sub here. I need to upgrade the same computer and would like to know what is the best video card to use without upgrading the power. Also the Msata looks like a great upgrade but not sure what to buy. Thanks, this vid was great a is just what I was looking for.
@dragonsystems5973
@dragonsystems5973 3 года назад
Ok so first with the power supply. The Power supply on the 8700 is actually pretty beefy, 500 watt with 2x PCI-E 6 Pin, so using an adapter that goes from 2 6's to an 8 you can run any mid to upper mid range card such as a 1070, a 1080, a 1660Ti ETC, just try to avoid the really power hungry versions and stick with a single 8 pin with the adapter or dual 6 pins. As far as the MSATA, it is kinda a waste, skip it and get a normal 2.5 SATA. MSATA is the same performance as standard sata and it is now a pretty much dead technology so if you buy one it will not be very flexible if you want to use it for something else... yeah, you could get an adapter for it, but save yourself the trouble.

Really cool video, keep up the good job. I have a XPS 8500 which is about the same thing as the XPS 8500, except it uses a slightly older CPU socket, LGA1155. I am upgrading my video card to a GTX 1660 and adding more 8 GB of RAM to the system, but I'm a little concerned about the CPU. I am currently using a i5-3350P, and I've heard some rumours that this video card is way too good for this system (i.e. my new video card will bottleneck with the CPU). The only possible upgrade on this system is getting a i7-3370, which is kinda expensive. Do you think it is really that worth upgrading the processor? I just want a decent gaming machine tbh.

@dragonsystems5973
@dragonsystems5973 4 года назад
If the power supply is operating correctly I doubt that is your problem, especially since manufacturer suggestions are almost always an overcompensation to begin with, and nvidia '60 cards only continue to become more power efficient. It could however be defective, I have in fact encountered defective XPS 8700 power supplies that behave similar to what you are describing. If you do have to replace it, I believe the 8700 uses a generic off the shelf configuration. Defective memory can cause this type of thing, though I doubt it in this case if it was not a problem before. Probably the first thing you should do is install hardware monitor and verify you are on solid thermal footing with the current build... run it with the side panel for t he case on so you know what kind of temps you are actually encountering under normal usage, even if it is not a thermal problem you still want to make sure you are on solid thermal ground regardless, especially with all that stuff packed into a small somewhat limited cooling performance package

I have seen that the Arctic Freezer 33 fits but I'd like to know if the newer 34 model will go in.

It's actually pretty cool how unproprietary the 8700 is. Honestly I dont think the case is that bad as far as OEM set ups go, it could be a lot worse, and I do think the power supply Dell used is suprising decent quality. 4th gen with a 10 series card I think is the perfect budget gaming build
@dragonsystems5973
@dragonsystems5973 4 года назад
Oh, I dont know if I would worry about the cooler, it's just my opinion, but the non k 4th gen i5 and i7 chips dont really make that much heat, especially now that you have better airflow in the new case... I won't lie though, it deffinitely would be a big aesthetic improvement and might do well to hide the OEM origin of some of the parts

Could you recommend a new cpu cooler for this case without taking the motherboard off ? I'm having the i7 4770 and stock cooler. I had the system for 5 years never replaced thermal paste :) it's that something to worry ? Thanks .
@dragonsystems5973
@dragonsystems5973 5 лет назад
If you are having thermal issues I would recommend removing and cleaning out the heatsink and applying new thermal paste before doing anything drastic. Good thermal paste alone may make the difference you need. The 4770 is not a hot chip from the start, plus these systems cant really be overclocked anyway(yes, I know, someone will tell me how they did it, but they cannot be overclocked using conventional means) add to that the fact that dell does use copper cored heatsinks, you really should be fine. Also, I dont think I have ever seen a good aftermarket heatsink that did not require a backplate, ive seen aftermarkets without them, but they are always fairly similar to intel stock, I suspect the standard intel style clip mechanism is limited on how much weight it can hold to the board

Ok, great, good for you.... I have more experience than you having built literally thousands of computers and used literally hundreds of those adapters in that time. @@ejayerik so, I dont generally tell people to go crazy, but I would add up your existing power draw plus the added draw of the new card and make sure you have at least 50 watts overhead, you dont want to be running it at its max spec constantly. Also, you want to add those numbers for each part under max load conditions, so when you look for power draw you want to find "power draw under load" also, make sure you are looking at power draw not TDP as they are not the same thing.
