I actually really like that Della’s a parent AND a character. A lot of cartoons have the parents revolve around their children with not much else to their personalities. They’re only friends with other parents and any talk of their past has to be about how they met the other parent and had their children. Della is NOT a perfect parent, but that’s why she’s 10x more entertaining than the bland “inspirational parents” that just spew out quirky metaphors and exist to shower their children in love.
yep, too many parent characters in media put emphasis on parent and not on character. They usually have all the parent tropes attached to them, whereas Della kinda flips them on their head because she doesn't know HOW to be a parent, and her character arc is learning how to be one. It's so fascinating to see her growth and even when she's a great mom later, she's still a character first and foremost and not a tropey parent :P
@@yuppers4460 Those are other parent characters done right. They do still feel like they're parents first sometimes (or at least Nicole does), but that's usually more of the episode's fault, not the characters'.
@@santosic Donald and Scrooge were also technically parent characters, but they had the advantage of having personalities predeternined by their powerful presence in past pop culture (accidental alliteration there!), which the writers were able to meld with their new roles in this show. Della, on the other hand, was a basically unknown character, having only appeared in 2-3 comics in the past (which is where the concept for her leaving her boys to go to the moon came from, albeit as a less affectionate character), so the writers had to basically build her character from scratch from the small roots and circumstances they had, leaving her more susceptible to that parent character cliche, and I will forever be grateful that they managed not to bring her to that. [P.S., Beakely could've also fallen to that trap, having only been seen in the OG Ducktales, but she and Webby were both reworked to be enjoyable anti-cliche characters.]
I'm pretty sure with her popularity, someone will continue using her. The only downside is that she probably ain't gonna be like how she was in _Ducktales 2017_
They did Della so absolutely perfect. She started as a mom full of enthusiasm, but with zero experience. So she made a bunch of mistakes, and then made some more. But she learned from that and slowly became an amazing mother. 10/10 show.
Della is legit the best “media mom.” She WANTS to be a mom, and honestly I LOVE IT that “the other DNA doner” is left open ended and her sons Literally Do Not Care-in my mind she’ll always be either a lesbian or an aro/ace wlw. (She doesn’t really show any interest in even a background male character for me to HC her as bi/pan; not that I’m against those hc’s since I’m biaroace? but y’know.) And since she’s Scrooge’s Favorite and *wanted* to be a mom, she almost certainly went the artificial insemination route. -I also would find it hilarious if she asked Agent 22 to donate bone marrow, and decided she wanted sons vs daughters so they did more Testtube Stuff-unless the triplets are trans, which is also possible- And like. Della WANTS to be a mom-a single mom by choice vs a “happy accident” from a one-night stand or failed relationship. She’s still DELLA vs “Mom is my personality” that female characters and IRL women get stigmatized as whether or not they choose motherhood or want motherhood. She seriously screws up, but she also spends over a decade trying to fix it then when she finally does make it back home, she puts in the effort to not only connect with her kids but learns how to be the adult they need-grounding Louie then promising to help him think things through and embracing his talents, vs the understandable but misguided cake to win them over with gifts. I love that she “keeps herself” and that she wants motherhood for herself and doesn’t have to “choose between the two” -men just never have that pushed on them, while women are told you can “only” be a Mother OR a Career Woman (never both and “your poor husband and children~” if there’s a “role reversal” or she tries to “be both Roles”) And until the fandom’s ready to grill Scrooge half as hard as they do Della, and stop going on about “who’s the daddy??/bAD mOTHER~” they...can kindly go piss off :’)
@@anonymousfellow8879 ok, she’s one of the best media moms because of the things that she does as a mom. Literally all that other shit you wrote is completely irrelevant to anything. You have Scrooge/Goldie and Donald/Daisy. That’s the romantic pairings in this series. Della is also awesome because she literally is an amputee. She has a physical disability and it in no way slows her down or makes her less of an adventurer. Like, come on man, focus on the things that actually exist in the show and not whatever bullshit you want to build around it
@Tom Sweeney Actually, it isn’t. Go see what the fandom is going off about with Della-it’s ALWAYS “wHO’s tHE dADdY~” or what a “terrible” mom she is because she’s not some traditional paragon housewife of motherhood...while this is NEVER THE CASE for male characters in parental/caregiving positions. EVER. And bud, Della’s literally referencing so many memes and innuendos if you’ve been around lgbtqa people and their online spaces at all literally every time she shares the screen with or is talked about by Penumbra and Selene. Of COURSE they won’t do anything beyond that-this is still Disney, they can’t even allow the writers to give Violet’s Dads lines and overhype these random side characters in their other media (like the butch lesbian cop in Onward with her single line about her wife.) So...YEAH. Della is a SINGLE mom which is already pretty damn remarkable. And yes you’re right, her being an amputee but still kicking ass vs getting sidelined is amazing and about damn time for media in general. (But don’t be an ass. The fandom already goes off about Della’s Lovelife (even tho there are options for single women and wlw women), and I’m really not stretching. I’m glad Della is single, and I’m happy enough with the writers blatantly coding Della, Selene, and Penny. I don’t need confirmation, but the coding is honestly already there anyway-tho it is MUCH more blatant with Storkulese/Donald with Storkulese’s one-sided attraction (and trying to make Donald/Daisy into Storkulese/Donald/Daisy-there’s literally an episode devoted just to that.)
@@anonymousfellow8879 It's always "Who's the Daddy?" because that's the next mystery. Dare I say the "next adventure"? When you have something as exhaustive as the Duck family tree and there just happens to be a branch that is totally obscured? Who the Triplets dad is... well, that's been a question for over 30 years. Hell, Who their mom actually was was a question for 30 years until DT 2017 introduced Della to the fold. Like, you knew the name Della Duck but she didn't have a character. So yeah, "who is the dad?" is a completely logical question or plot thread to want an answer to without questioning Della as a character. Also, sorry, can't say I'm up to date on LBGT memes. I do know that if I had a character, man or woman, with Della's backstory, I wouldn't be running them through romantic storylines either because there is a ludicrous amount of meat on the bone in terms of family and just being a normal person stories.
@@anonymousfellow8879 Also, man, I don't know if you've noticed, the fandoms of pretty much any show are weird as hell. Like for Harry Potter. You get "Draco, you foul little ferret" and "Granger, you stinking mudblood" and you've got a disturbing amount of the fanbase that will be like "Oh, but now they wuv each other!".
right and why are people upset she grounded Louie. he almost ended the world with that time tub. bad kids get punished. It's called discipline. it's not supposed to be fun
I love how Della has traits of all her family members. She uses everyone's catchphrases at some point, she has similar behaviors, and all around it's easy to tell she's a part of the Duck family.
@@JETS5 And when she tried to figure out how to introduce to her family, when she came back, she tried 3 different introductions. All 3 were the way each one of the triplets would have used to introduce themselves.
I really hate it, when other people hate characters for their mistakes in the past. I hate it when they say, that Della doesn't love Louie as much as she loves her other sons, just because she grounded him once. I really hate it when they say, Della isn't a good parent, just because she made the mistake of her life in her *past* Because all I can see in this video, is a lovely, a little bit unsure mom, who's trying her best to be the best parent she could. She's bonding with her boys, she's supporting them and she is trying to make her kids happy. Even Della isn't the most responsible person, she is still a good mom. That is was really matters and not the dumb things in her past. Cause even on the moon, all she was doing, was to regret every step she made into the rocket, thinking about her boys and her family and trying to get back. You can hate the actions of a character, but not the character themself for their actions. You can still hate her... But please don't hate her for her mistakes *in the past* and stop saying she is a bad parent or doesn't love Louie. Thank you!
Ducktales Reboot is simply the best. 1. Huey, Dewey, and Louie have different personalities. 2. The Triplet's Mother being a carefree parent. 3. Webby's Grandmother is a super strong spy. 4. Their are many crossovers like Goofy, Tiny Mouse, and others. 5. The family has some character development.
Nah, it was pretty inaccurate to the Carl Barks and Don Rosa comics on which it's supposed to be based as well as the original Ducktales. It made the wrong characters OP.
@@ThePaganSun that’s kinda the point, the show needed the triplets to get some unique personalities, the lack of individuality was bound to get stale at some point. Besides, the show can’t just do the same stuff over and over again, it has to stand out while still being recognizably DuckTales, I would say they did that pretty well
@@cantthinkofaname5046 I don't think so. The original point of them was to be identical. A previous series "Quack Pack" also gave the triplets different looks and personalities and it didn't really do them justice (there were some other things wrong with the show but that's beside the point). Plus, them getting "different personalities" boxed them in. Now Huey is just the smart guy, Dewey is just gutsy and Louie is just greedy and lazy. The triplets' classic personalities let them do pretty much anything. And if they're changed too much, they're not really the same characters. Same thing with the others. But as annoying as the triplets' change was, that was far from my biggest issue with with the show...which was how they essentially sidelined Donald in a series inspired by the source material of _his_ adventures and then had the gall to elevate a semi newbie like Webby over the actual canon character who's the reason for all of Duckburg and _Scrooge McDuck himself_ to even exist. They let a newbie hijack _his_ abilities, adventures, and even _family_ and gave her credit that should've been _his._ Webby never went on the Carl Barks and Don Rosa adventures (the source material that inspired both Ducktales), nor is she canonically related to Scrooge. But Donald and HDL _are_ and they were sidelined for her who never actually did the things she's credited for here. And that's just unacceptable to me. One doesn't just elevate newbies above the actual canon characters. Newbies should fit into the canon, we don't change canon to fit the newbie. So no. DT17 _didn't_ do it well. They disrespected Donald and honored a semi newbie character that didn't deserve it over the one that actually did.
@@ThePaganSun Dude, it’s a different take on the universe, they aren’t supposed to be the same thing. Just enjoy it for being a good reboot and the most original reboot
@@MetroGexual mhm the point of a reboot is literally to be similar, but different (plus making the boys unique made them make a really good team, but also made things go wrong when they weren't working together, which fit really well with the family and teamwork message of the show)
She already IS a permanent character, she's was an old character that was never really used for years until now. Disney has a boatload of original characters in Mickey's Universe that are either retired or not being used for some reason. Oswald and Della are just the tip of the iceberg.
@@ceecee6521 I’m pretty sure people started saying that when she grounded Louie, like no she just grounded her son because he almost broke all of time and his family in the process? So she wanted to stop him from doing what she did before he got too carried away
@@sapphirewingthefurrycritic985 loving your kids doesn't make them a good parent either being a parent means past down your knowledge and skill and teaching form right form wrong thats a good parent she acts like a fun friend then actual parent except when she was teach one of the boys to polite and grounding the green witch didn't last
She’s a great mom. She has flaws but she tries to be a role model for her sons. She’s supportive and isn’t like any other parents we would see at a kids’ show. She spent years on the moon alone and during that time, she tried to fix her ship to go home. If you think she’s horrible at parenting then keep it to yourself.
"Oh boy now there's two of them." "Pretty sure we stuffed him in the garage...." "If you do that last part exactly right you won't die!" "Scrooge won't even let me touch the Toaster!" "Hey cool a dead guy!" "If you're gonna let the caveduck ride a skateboard in the house you should make him wear a helmet!" God I'm gonna miss this show dearly.
I was sold on Della ever since seeing all she went through on the moon. She wants to be a good mom so bad, makes mistakes in the process, and tries to do better. And she is always hilarious
I love Della so much. I expected her to be the perfect over the top caring mom that died (for pretty much every main protagonist that has a dead mom), but no. She came back and is careless yet caring as ever. She’s an inexperienced mom that’s trying her best, but does not have any parental experience whatsoever. She was a pleasant surprise and one of the funniest characters on the show.
Dewey: I haven’t seen fizzy rocks in so long! Webby: That’s because of all the lawsuits that were saying they were unsafe to eat! Huey: EAT IT EAT IT EAT IT
dewey: Cloud kicking is so much better then piloting. Della's mind: I would strangle you but I love you so I'm going to try to be happy for you ya lil-
I also like the moment she said to... Dewey I think? he doesn't have to prove her anything for her to love him in the episode with all the seeds of the world store in one place.
Also that speech she gave Scrooge in "New Gods on The Block". Not my favourite episode but one of my favourite Della moments in the season, if not the whole show.
It's really sweet how Della immediately trusted Dewey with the Cloudslayer. Even when he crashed, she praised him. And yeah, she's right! His first try and he was already doing amazing. I know a lot of kids Dewey's age would have IMMEDIATELY crashed, or gotten confused. Della is a GREAT mom, and I don't care what anyone says
That being said, putting an eleven-year-old in charge of flying is a very, VERY bad idea. She gets points for being encouraging and supportive, but she's _really_ got to work on the whole "reckless endangerment" thing. Then again, Scrooge (and even Donald, on occasion) is also guilty of that so I dunno.
I love how true this show was to everyone's characters, especially Della. I mean, how in the world would someone with her background deal with suddenly having to be a real parent to her three boys, after a decade of imagining how it would be? Dell's life had always been one of extremes, so when she finally gets to be a mom, she goes to every extreme trying to make it work. Her emotions are in a frenzy when she comes back. Dealing with excitement, fear, small amount of guilt over leaving in the first place, and that plays off of the boys' emotions as well, since they have a lot of feeling, most of which as kids they have no idea how to deal with anyway. Her character arc revolves around finding a balance between supporting her kids in whatever they want to do, and holding then back from things that could hurt them, physically or emotionally. For me, the moment Della finally broke through the barrier and realised what it takes to be a parent came when she finally grounded Louie. A kid has to learn consequences someday, much better for them to learn while they are young and will be safe. Children who get away with everything grow up to become horrible people, and in this case, they make decisions that could get themselves or other people killed. Della finally realized that to be a parent sometimes means doing things you don't want to do, and her reaction afterward saying it was the hardest thing she'd ever had to do proves that she's finally achieved the balance. And afterwards she becomes a better mom to all of them, but still remains true to her character, being chaotic and letting them do things that had she thought about them for a few seconds she might decide "mmmmaybe not". She still makes mistakes, but she always tries. And the kids start to respect her as an authority figure in their lives, like when Dewey asked her permission to go ride the carnival wheel. Its the small details that make this show so great. So yeah, Della is one of the best animated characters ever, and Paget Brewster was born to play that role. I love all of the characters, but for me, Della Duck achieved character growth that I never could have expected from this show.
Ikr. There's this weird misconception that comeuppance for a characters wrongdoings HAS to come from the people they've wronged. They don't see that Della being stranded on the moon for a decade and regretting her actions every day IS her punishment.
I love how they dont make her a perfect mom shes not a bad mom by any means but shes new to it and her boys are already kids not babies anymore so it makes sense thats shes not good at like how most moms in cartoons are perfect at being moms while della is not she tries and loves her kids more then anything but she has no idea what shes doing but shes still a good mom shes just new at it
The inclusion and fleshing out of Della Duck, one of the most neglected characters even by Carl Barks' standards, was probably one of the boldest and smartest things 2017 DuckTales did in a long list of bold/smart decisions. It's one of the many reasons why even I, someone who grew up reading Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics by Carl Barks and loved the 1987 DuckTales, consider it to be better than even the 1987 original. Plus, Paget Brewster's voice and performance is a real Dellacasy, no pun intended.
I will forever respect the team behind this show for writing three characters that happen to be triplets and another character that happens to be their mother. None of them revolve around their role. And it's beautiful.
In Della's defense? She never actually WAS a parent until she got back from being stranded on the moon. She had three eggs when she was stranded and eggs are suprisingly easy to care for and parent. She had literally no experience or skill at it, and was going straight from never having been a parent in her life to having THREE KIDS. She went from 0 to 500 in one step. The fact she managed at ALL is actually pretty impressive. The fact that she actually learned, adapted, and BECAME good at it in the end is downright LEGENDARY. The majority of LIFELONG parents never fully get good at it!
I love her. I was excited that Della was going to be part of the show by the end of the season 1 premiere, and I only wish we'd had a fourth season to get more time with her and the other characters who were introduced later on in the series.
I miss this show already. I really wish they had given us another season , but I guess it's better to go out as an amazing show then become old and stale... but still...
1 extra season to expand more on maybe the moonlanders and dark wing duck (I'm on episode 11 season 3 btw) maybe another visit to castle mcduck? Season 4 could've had the big fowl fight thing. I feel like 4 seasons would be enough edit: i finished the show and they didnt touch on jim starling when he was in the sewers
I wish we get 4th season to explore Coot's side of the duck family. They're the descendants of duckburg's founder after all. Also explore May and June characters and how they will adopted by Daisy.
1:07 Love this story, ngl. Wish they ended it without the comedic change to funny to keep the drama, but I get that it's a comedy, therefore it isn't supposed to be as dramatic at every point. 4:14 Best moment in the whole show and you can't change my mind
1:07 Della: The place: El Dorado, The time: When I was your age. The legend: The horror known as the Gilded Man. The Aztec android was meant to protect the people, but he blew a fuse and mangled them instead. Metal gnawed through flesh, leaving a trail of bodies until the gold city was stained blood red. I grabbed a wrench, crawled inside the gold-minted monster, hacked away at his clockwork innards, tearing him apart from the inside, piece-by-piece with reckless abandon! Wham! He let out a ghastly rusted shriek! Until, finally, his gory gears turned their last. Some say that was a death knell. Others say it was a promise; To rebuild and seek vengeance on the one who defeated him and her family! Pretty sure we stuffed him in the garage. Well, goodnight!
4:52 I remember there was a great subtle moment here. While Dewey is looking at the video on his phone, Della rubs his head. It's the little gestures that matter too.
I found a "KH" fic in which Aqua and Della are a ship and couple. Yes, I'm gonna leave this here. I'm sadistic and like to see people horrified. Plus, people ship Cortana and Master Chief. Don't see why not ship a human and an antromorphic duck.
Funny how I’m finding comments about people who are defending Della, yet I haven’t seen a single comment that attacks her. Maybe if I scroll more....nah.
