There is some very valuable information here. I’ve been using song view for writing and performance and there’s definitely some features i need to be taking advantage of. First, I’ve been trying to figure out how to sample different chords/notes of the same instrument/sample and sequence/play them in one clip, not multiple clips. Kit is the answer! Just load different chops into different parts in a kit and sequence from there! Genius! Second, I’ve struggled to memorize the clips i want to trigger all at once, really quickly, and sometimes i forget to unmute one of the 3 or 4 clips i want to play at the same time. Grouping is the answer! This will take a huge load off my mind during a performance. Third; in one instance, my song had a 32 bar clip playing before a 4 bar clip, and I armed the 4 bar clip but just waited for it to play, not knowing the exact point it was going to play. In arranger view, I can choose exactly what time the shorter clip will play. So much more predictability there. Thank you so much for this! Learning Deluge has been a struggle, but these tips will allow me to take full advantage of my performances:

@@OllieLoops I'm really enjoying it! It really has got a lot going for it - I find it intuitive to use, and the sequencer grid scroll and zoom is fantastic (not to mention the brilliance of how copy and paste has been implemented!) I wish the effects section was a little better (but I do quite like the reverb!) - although the effects are totally usable, I think the delay and distortion could be the most improved (and I'm kind of missing an on board compressor... although that's not really essential I guess!). But hey, that's just nit-picking - it's pretty damn amazing, and currently my favourite bit of kit!

Eight months later -- OH! I get it now! It was a very steep learning curve (for me) that required me mimicking your moves and button presses one-for-one (after taking a few other courses first to get some Deluge basics under my belt -- ones that you went over in the beginning; but I could only understand the terms and what was happening after I got a few other's education on those subjects). With that said, thank you for helping me put it all together as I can now navigate in and out of the Arranger with ease -- and it does what I expect it to do. That wasn't the case 6-8 months ago. (The problem was that I was creating "white" ones and couldn't understand why . . . it was a brick wall that was getting in my way . . . I'll add that this confusion was reinforced by the manual's instructions).

Thanks, this is helpful. I've been considering a Deluge or MPC to replace a Digitakt, and this gives me more info about how that might go. Hoping to work in a manner which is horizontal first (time) then vertical (adding tracks), with much of the actual sound design happening toward the end after the notes have been arranged. For now, I'm basically using a Digitakt for drums and to control a bunch of synths, as shown in my video called "Easy Does It". It works, but it has some pretty awkward drawbacks. It's all based around 64-step 4-bar patterns, which I find are never long enough so I need several patterns per phrase and several banks of patterns per song. It also ignores CC data from external controllers entirely, and even when sequencing CC with its onboard encoders it can only do one value per 16th-note step. Then when I'm nearing the end of a project and want to tweak things for mixing purposes, I have to apply those changes individually to every pattern in the song... which adds hours to the process. And it uses proprietary protocols so I can't even back up my data or load samples. I'd like to work on a timeline instead, which makes the Deluge appealing. I hear it also handles CC data much better, and makes it pretty easy to do triplet notes, which I use a lot but are exceptionally awkward on a Digitakt. Also, it seems like it could facilitate rendering midi tracks as audio and then arranging those on the timeline, allowing me to multitrack a monosynth and reduce the amount of gear needed. It could even allow reverb tails and such, since clips don't have to align to pattern boundaries. I'm concerned about its UI though, and the difficulty of remembering what each clip is when I have a large number of them. The MPC seems generally more mature and more user-friendly in most ways. Its automatic multisampling also seems really nice, for tracks which don't involve rely on turning knobs for expression. The main drawback is that it has no timeline mode... it's still pattern-based like the Digitakt (but with much longer patterns). Also, it's a bit heavy on menuing. Anyway, apologies for the long comment... mostly just wanted to say thanks, and then got lost thinking out loud.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 года назад
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad I could offer a place to hear your thoughts and your decision making process. You seem to have a good sense for what you want and how the machines may or may not fit into your workflow. Here's my thoughts. Both the Deluge and MPC series offer advanced features which you would likely appreciate. In terms of UI, each has it's pros and cons. The Deluge requires much memorization and regular use to ingrain what you learn. The MPC can have an easier learning curve and the touchscreen is a tremendous aid in workflow. The Deluge is a more of a standalone device with better synthesis capabilities. Although they both have decent sound design options, I think the MPC pulls ahead in terms of features and how much you can manipulate sound. But when it comes down to the capabilities of their sequencers, I think that the Deluge's Arranger view can give you greater flexibility in your arrangement. The MPC is still powerful, but its limited due to being pattern based whereas the Deluge is more akin to a DAW. Also, I haven't fully tested this yet, but I believe the Deluge has better midi implementation in terms of controlling external gear. It's not an easy decision because they are both special devices. But its ultimately up to you and how you expect them to fit into your workflow. I would recommend checking out each devices manual to gain insight into how each one could fit into your workflow. Good luck and let me know what you decide.

Is there a way to adjust the level of individual tracks is song view ? I thought i saw a video somewhere demonstrating that where you can just push on the grid of each track in song view to adjust the individual track volumes but now i cant find it and i cant find that info in the manual so far. Ive only been able to adjust track levels by going into each track separately and adjusting the level there , but i could swear i saw a more mixer like quicker procedure in the song mode where where you adjust the levels on the grid just pushing . Maybe im mistaken idk.

Hi thanks for a brilliant and really helpful video. You mention that you can uncouple the cloned tracks in clip view - how do you do this so that they play at the same time? Also is there an option to loop the arrangement ? Thanks
@damiangolfinopoulos9164
@damiangolfinopoulos9164 4 года назад
Thanks for the vid. Something I've noticed is that the arranger will not (seemingly) take probability information from kits or synths into the arranger. And you cannot perform 'mutes' within clips - ie muting and unmuting elements of a kit, it seems to just capture a single mute snapshot. Currently my workaround for this is to record long phrases say for a kit, change this long phrase into a white instance and to then manually reprogram these longer phrases to have probability and variations in mutes within a kit. This gets kinda problematic when you're relying on clip colours to get an idea of where you are in a song, so I create blank kits that I use just to use a song clip colour marker --- ie I have a 16 bar blue phrase and I can see the 4 bar yellow phrase is coming up. Sorry about the wordiness...reading about programming is like watching paint crack
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 года назад
Interesting. I would suggest contacting Synthstrom directly with this comment. I think it could be either a bug or a suggestion for an improvement. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
@damiangolfinopoulos9164
@damiangolfinopoulos9164 4 года назад
@@OllieLoops thanks ollie...can you confirm this behaviour? Are you able to chuck a whole bunch of variation on a clip and record this into the arranger? And Im assuming when recording from song mode into arranger it does not allow you to open a kit clip and toggle mutes on and off and then this mute on/off is recorded into your arrangment window?

Hey guys, I need help! I am building a techno set on my deluge, mainly using the arranger. I have already build 10 minutes in one project but I noticed that the CPU starts to have problems with such a big project. Because of that I want to build the next part in another project. But if I try to load the new project at the end of the arrangement it just keeps on going for an unspecified time. It doesn't just load the new project at the end of the arrangement, but keeps on going. Eventually it will load the new project after some time, but I couldn't figure out how to influence this timespan. On the display it shows a blinking 1 and I can change that to higher numbers, but I guess the higher the number the longer it will loop?
