@@1959hogryder 1973 I worked for a farmer that used 4020s, a 5010 and 5020s with duals. One of the 4020s had, we called, an Automatic. The farmer said he wouldn't buy an automatic again because it didn't pull as much as the standard clutch model. I thought the 5020s were smooth with the duals. The 5010 had a cab and it was hot even though you had shade.

One option you missed was the PowerShift disconnect lever on the left side of the cowl. It was to aid in cold starting. The other thing worth mentioning is the hydraulic pump in the Hydrostatic FWA possessed twice the capacity of the regular pump. From the sounds of this one when it is turned on, either a hard line bracket has broken or the main relief valve has seen better days due to likely overheating. These tractors are pushing oil thru the hubs even with it turned off which is soaking power. Imagine when it is cold out! In the low setting, you got a little something for the effort. They could turn way tighter than a MFWD, but that is about the only advantage they had. Need to leave the weights off the front of these tractors, the axle itself was usually enough ballast for 2WD. If they didn't slip some when on the high setting, they heated up the hydraulics fast when pulling hard.
@shorthood2518
@shorthood2518 4 года назад
I was under the impression that they used the same pump as a standard 4020. Also thanks to the series/parallel/reverse valve, the front wheels are bypassed until the switch is flipped on the dashboard. Also the later tractors didn't have a destroking lever like the earlier

In Mannheim, the 4040S and 4240S weee built from parts from the US and from ZF to create mechanical FWD for the European market. HFWD just cost them too much business to competitors... So with the 50 series, the headquarters got some sense and adopted the European MFWD...

@@farminghuntingtrapping-fht yea I agree to some degree 4020 was stronger and had more power capabilities but the 2955 had good cabs. That's an interesting machine with the FWA. I grew up with one just like this, minus the FWA, same side console, powershift, but we had a very nice hiniker cab on it. I am not a fan of 4020's. It makes a great chore tractor. It makes a mediocre workhorse. On hot summers, you didn't dare shut it down or it wouldn't restart until the whole tractor cooled off. If we tried to make it work pulling, it would buck back and something would break, at one point it was in the shop getting the powershift fixed because dad made the mistake of thinking we could try to plow with it, next month it was back getting some hydraulic issue fixed because one of the remotes just up and quit working, and two months later something else happened where it would go into gear, but there was this wierd delay and then a big jerk when it engaged. We had a lot of loaner tractor time that summer. We only had 34's on the back of ours, so maybe that had something to do with it, but IMO the engines do not lug past maybe a 200 rpm drop. They just start losing power and can't recover, so the tractor could either do the work, or not, there wasn't much in between. This was a big deal because we farmed hills, and varied soil from sandy to loam to red clay. I am sure a lot of guys farming flat black earth have stories about how nice a 4020 was. We enjoyed it on our corn planter and for chore work, but we didn;t use it to till, it would just run out of steam and peeter out on the transitions from flat ground to sandy hills, or worse, red clay, or mostly impossible for it, red clay hills. We had good use of it on our haybine later on also when we picked up a larger one, the 4020 seemed to excel on lighter pulling work, or PTO jobs. For the heavy work though, it couldn't hold a candle to our Case 1030, and our smaller David Brown 1200 gave it a run for it's money too. We rented a David Brown 1410 one summer, THAT was an excellent tractor for that HP range. Different strokes for different folks, and if ya love these tractors, that's just fine. But years of operating one on a dairy and the frustration of dealing with it's limitations leaves it on the bench for me.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 4 года назад
Great history. A Case 1030 and 1410 are on my wish list to film. I live in a red clay area. It is tough soil. I see 620 hp tractors stall out trying to sun soil at 18 inches.
@tommckinley111
@tommckinley111 4 месяца назад
Definitely something wrong with that diesel engine if it wouldn't restart hot, those tractors did their best work hot(200-210F). curious what you were tilling with? we had a 71 3020D w/Powershift and we worked the snot out of it pulling a 4-16s trailer plow in flat blue clay in 2nd gear all day or a 12ft 370 Intl disk. 3020D is the same engine only 4cylinders instead of 6. And it is best to leave a hot diesel running, my experience in northern WI was cold was harder on them than anything.

No kidding, wow. So it was a well worth investment n could keep on putting feed up while most others spun out ? I have a 4020 myself n am quite humbled. I honestly didn’t know FWA was even an option. I know what the 2wheelers can do. This is a sweet piece of history n still at work 👌. I pull a 9 tine deep ripper but I’d love a 4 or 5 bottom plow. Again awesome video. Is the family still in the custom business ? Seems like they were on the cutting edge.

The hydrostatic front wheel assist- does that work similar to say a rear wheel assist on a combine? Similar to say an axle off a 7720 combine? Never seen or heard of such an option on a 4020, but very cool indeed.
@shorthood2518

In theory it should. The tractor's hydraulic pump doesn't have the flow of a combine's hydrostat. They would keep you from getting stuck, but pretty worthless at getting you unstuck

I always wondered why they choked it with that teeny little exhaust pipe on the late model ones. Many of the ones around here that did a lot of heavy tillage ended up with an M&W turbo kit. Some had the Red Rooster LP assist that mounted a small LP tank on the front, when they hit a tough spot,it metered some propane into the intake for a power boost.

I believe its two different strengths of the front wheel assist. Up is high strength and down is lower strength/speed used to help keep the fronts around the same speed as the rears to not cause a push or pull scenario. That's at least how it works on the later 4430 and 4440 PFWD

Hugh Munro That is the engine breather. When this was built the engineers vented crankcase vapors to the outside. Now the go back to the intake and are burned. What it is? Most likely moisture from inside the engine. The operator shifted to a higher gear so the engine was working much harder and therefore got hotter. Could be compression blowing by the piston rings, but it did not start until the engine was working harder. My GUESS is moisture.

That is a good question. A viewer left a comment in this thread saying only 150. That seems really low given that nearly 185,000 4020s were built. The FWA was offered for the last four years of production. At 2,000 plus dollars maybe it was a big luxury item. This one is a one family machine. It was bought new to do custom corn chopping. The FWA was ordered to pull the chopper and forage wagons up hills and paid for itself in wet falls getting the silage chopped.

I'm not positive but I thought the 69-70 4020s came with Stolper cabs with the fan box on roof in the front left corner and the Hinson cabs came out in 71 with the A/C box front and center on roof.

11:30 have those farmers ever considered trying ploughing the first furrow in the middle of the field and then plough outwards towards each headland (side of the field)? No dead furrows can be got from that method. The ultimate solution is a reversible. That's not a pop at those farmers as I complement them on using old machinery to get a return on their sizable investment many decades ago. But I haven't seen a dead furrow in Ireland all my growing up as a boy in the late 80s, before the reversibles arrived mid-90s.

My dad alternated year to year. This year plow in and next plow out. That way there wasn't a build up of soil at the fence rows.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 4 года назад
As Allen said most farm altered the way a field was plowed year to year. One year you plowed lands to the middle and other years you plowed from the middle. This way you moved the plow furrow and kept from mounding up soil on the edges or middle by going one way year after year. The plow furrow would be smoothed over by disking and harrowing. You can see in this video where I was disking behind plows leaving a dead furrow with my 4786 at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1YaaJ5HQ1bc.html Secondary tillage did help reduce the severity of a dead furrow to plant over but even with corn in the ground you could still easily see where the plow passes met as that area was sunken a bit.
@normanreed572
@normanreed572 4 года назад
You learned at a young age how to plow in a dead furrow. Roll over plows were too expensive for most farmers. Also, I have a 1930 model AA truck with positive crankcase ventilation.

It seems strange seeing a 4020 that isn't 2wd, excellent find and video. I'm guessing that it is down to the simplicity of the conventional plough that a lot of farms in America didn't go the way of the reversible plough so that they could plough all the same way across the field
