4020 diesel with 4 bottom plow and a 5020 pulling a 7 bottom plow. @MillennialFarmer @bigtractorpower @heritageironmagazine @RennerStockFarms Thanks for watching!
In the late 70's i ran a 1965 4020 with the Power Shift and drug a 5-16 J D 135 Semi mount plow with a gauge wheel, weed whips and trash boards on the plow. Great tool and one stout 4020.
From shes 12 to 17 I worked on my uncle's farms .He would pick me up at3:45 after I got off bus n changed my clothes take me ti the field . I would jump up on the 4020 power shift with the 5 x16 hydraulic reset plow n would get off that tractor at 12 at night . We had 2 4020 s one standard shift one power shift n 2 5 x16 moldboard plows n we would 400 to 500 acted in Pennsylvania ground every year . The standard shift tractor would plow in 4 gear alot of the time while other 4020 barely could pull in 3 gear .Round we would go n the standard dhuft tractor would catch up to me in 5 . Great memories as a young man growing up on the farms .rounds
My soil is literally a sand deposit dropped off on a hillside by wind its pure sand all the way down to bedrock at like 350 feet down like 90% sand. awful soil to work with mostly because it doesnt hold water at all an nutrients just go right through it but grapes love it.
In my opinion, the 4020 was one of the best tractors ever built, especially with the power shift. I'm not surprised yours is still running after maybe 50 years. The electrical system wasn't very good though, I didn't like the generator with 2 outputs and the idea of the left side - right side systems. I was pretty young back then but we got rid of one of the batteries, got a 12 volt starter and a 12 volt alternator and used the now empty battery box for tools.
yes the tractor still runs great and so nice to use for any task. I would agree that the batteries are the biggest issue we have as well. thanks for watching!
Yes the split electrical system on the early 4020s was not good started on 24 volts then the electrical system was split to run on 12 volts lights and other electrical systems.....created a huge fire hazard, we had one that fried the wiring harness while in our shop thought the shop was gonna catch on fire...
My grandfather has an early model LP version, with the front bucket attachment and I can say with confidence that thing has not once let us down and still runs just fine
I had a 1972 4020 and a 530 JD hay roller when they first came out it , I did custom rolling , some of the best money I made farming. Not many people had a roller back then so I stayed busy.
Wonderful, thanks for taking care of them. I love the 4020. Looks right, timeless. Maybe one day you would do a walk around, showing what does what. Thank you.
I had a late model 4020 Diesel with the side console. It was the best tractor John Deere ever made. It was simple by todays standards, but, it was all steel and, easy to fix if you needed to. Someone should build one just like it today, you would sell thousands of them. but, it seems like the trend is to tractors that drive themselves, too bad. I grew up with two-cylinder John Deere, and, the last one i had was a really nice 530, another great tractor.
Yup, I had the same one. I farmed a half section with that and a 3020, later, I traded the 3020 for a new 2240, or 2440, I can not remember, it was okay, but, the 3030 was better. My 4020 and 3020 had synchro transmissions, worked great for me.
Funny thing:. Both old 2 cylinder Deeres and old Farmalls shifter much better when old than this generation of tractors. I used to bale hay with an 806 back in the early 70s and it shifted Ok. My brother had one around 2015 and it was sloppy. I used a 4010 to help him and it shifted badly, too. The 40s and 50s was when quality really mattered.
@@jeffbriggs4268 Your brother's 806 back in 2015 was roughly speaking about a 50 year old tractor, and likely needed some repairs. I'm talking 50 years here. I mean what do you expect?
I have owned my 4020 power shift for 40 years. I pull a IH 720 4 bottom with auto-reset. You don't have any rocks. I live in upstate NY. We have rocks. My 4020 is a '64.
Noticed they stay far away from tree roots. Had some experience with those when I was a teenager. The one I remember most was hitting a rock the size of a chevy and being jerked out of the seat when everything came to a sudden stop.
I thankfully have the luxury of being able to not only be around a large variety of old iron, but also to be able to restore them. It's so satisfying to get an old 50s era tractor that hasn't moved since my grandparents were my age up and running again. Not one other thing I have done in my entire life has ever felt the same as getting one of these old beasts running again
What size are your front tires on this 4020 I'm looking to replace the front tires on my 4020 and I want the 4 rib tires like on yours. Your plow job looks really nice by the way.
That was awesome! Thanks for sharing. I was always told that with the power shift, you could figure on dropping one bottom from what the synchro-range would pull. Is that true?
No. Gear change under load was easy. Many times you could add one in these conditions. Time once upon, lots of guys had 2 different plows for different conditions. These days it is hard to find the plow matched to your old tractor and conditions. If you go to any Plow Days, a 4 bottom is an easy size to haul and unload. So many have went to scrap. I sent an F145 5-16 and a 1350-1450 6-16 to scrap years ago. Of course now I would like to have them back.
@Rudy Carlson I think about 12 years ago. It was a little rough and bad tires but the hood was pretty decent and we collected parts for a while till we got it all together and painted it. We poured concrete for a guy in his garage and traded the labor for it so we think it was a great deal!
@@chad7575 I got a john Deere tractor and the plastic door latch broke so I could'nt get out of the cab. Lucky the neighbor came by. It's all junk made of plastic.
This plow we found locally for a really good price and it's in great shape. Always looking for more but hard to find sometimes. It's just what we have for now. Thanks for watching!
Really guy, almost 60 year old tractor, runs smoothly good tires nice steps, plenty of daylight to farm with, maybe the man wanted to try it out instead of worrying about nit picking b.s. it's burning clean and if the fluids are staying put, farm with it.
