Anyone who buys a ri fender instead of vintage for that kinda money is crazy... Theyre garbage, built cheap. Sound great. But i want it built handwired on a turret board
Lol another old dude bringing up age with playing...most famous guitarist are in prime 18-29...age has nothing to do with it...he's got skill and puts in the work...I find so many old guitarist THINK their better because their older..I had an older guy mad that I owned a 1960 Strat when I was 19...said I wasn't old enough to know what was good gear
ass goblin he is absolutely NOT saying that older dudes play better than young ones. Even if that is obviously true, by the way, as nothing replace years of experience.... At the contrary he says that the guy here plays better that he was as the same age. So it was a compliment. Learn to read dude
ass goblin respect this comment! 75% of all the comments people have left on this video are about how i shouldn’t own any of this gear... i worked my ass off to save up for all I own!
In my opinion this video is one of the better videos with talking. Excellent guitar playing along with a balanced demonstration of both Fender amps. The 65 fender reissue is more beefy and ballzy in my opinion. Please keep up the great work young man. Thanks so much for this video 👍🎸
I'm about to buy the Princeton right now because of this video thanks! I was on the fence about the Deluxe vs the Princeton. I think the Deluxe would be better for any live shows but I need it primarily for the studio and that thing sounds awesome with the stock speaker! Thanks for making this video :-)
Aloha Jake! I remember watching this video some time ago and wanted to come back to it. Notice I said some time ago....you made an impression on me that I had to search for this one video. Excellent playing Braddah! Mahalo nui loa for sharing your time in providing this demo!
I was all excited about the Deluxe but this video really shines a light on the Princeton; I think it might have a nicer sound overall for a few bucks less. Great demo!
I’ve got both. The Princeton is killer for home playing but does not have the clean headroom to run a pedal board much passed volume at 6 with the amp really breaking up. Sometimes it good, sometimes you need more headroom/volume.
great demo .. picking up guitar again (played a bit way back in highschool)and i just put some money down on a limited edition 65' deluxe reverb (western tooled) with the wheat speaker grate !!!! CANT WAIT
First time seeing this and I’m glad I stopped by kid! Fantastic demonstration, tone and playing! Many extra points for putting them through the same cabinet with same speaker. Awesome!
I love my DRRi with it’s 12 inch speaker. But I would also in the absence of my DRRi be totally happy using a Princeton as both sound fantastic. I mean if Mike Campbell is happy with a Princeton what an endorsement that is!
65 Blackface Fender Princeton Reverb - the most perfect guitar amp ever made. Got-one, love it . . . available Tones: SRV, Gilmour, Hendrix, Trower, Knopfler, & Nile Rodgers. Phenomenal amplifier. Enjoyed your demo & playing. oNe LovE from NYC
Just wanted to sincerely compliment your absolutely excellent playing and feel!! Some really tasty bends and rhythmic placement there - I'd love to hear you with a band
I own both. I use the Princeton about 4 times as often as I use the Deluxe. Obviously, if I was only buying one amp, the Princeton wins, hands down. The ratio would be true when compared to the frequency of use for my other amps, too. Overall, I use my Princeton 50% of the time. My other amps are 2012 VoxAC15c, 2008 Fender Blues Jr in blonde, 2015 Fender Vaporizer in Seafoam (for fun!), 1968 Univox - about 40 watts (bassman clone), - and the previously mentioned Deluxe and Princeton RIs. Small amps rock!
Not watching video, just listening to the amps. You did a very nice job of going through each amp’s own characteristics. Went back and actually watched it the second time, mainly to watch YOU play. Very well done indeed!
It absolutely does. I’ve got both and they’re great, but the Princeton just doesn’t have the headroom for volume or to run a pedal board through without the amp running out of ability to handle much of a venue.
Very well done. I have a 72 deluxe in the shop right now I play all the time but I was looking at the Princeton. I also really appreciate that you put in some jazz chords. Most demonstrations just involve power cords and some pentatonic shredding. You got talent young man. Also an adorable dog
That's a really good demo video of these 2 beautiful amps!! Very comprehensive and clear (although sometimes i can't hear what youre saying lol). Real nice and ballzy playing right there! Now, I still can't dicide which one i like the best; for the cleans I am more inclined for the Princeton and it's clarity, but for the hard pushed tones, man, the Deluxe is a killer!
Thanks for the Demo. This is exactly what I was looking for. I used a 69 Fender Super Reverb for over 30 years. As I get older , it is too much to lug around and is more power than I need. So I got the RI Deluxe Reverb. Sounds great, not 69 Super Reverb great, but great enough. I need to lighten the load again and wanted to see if the Princeton at 28 lbs would better suit me in the "lug it around" dept. I think it will.
Awesome demo. I've been offered both of them for exactly the same prize. P is in Tweed, D with a 12" speaker. Having listened to this, I'll go for the Prince, I guess it's more versatile for Jazz/Blues.
Watched this video expecting you as a young lad in your home to give some average leveled review. Nah you actually did a hell of a job, really enjoyed the video. Thanks man!
Have always wanted a Deluxe Reverb, but think I may just have to get the Princeton. Already own a heavily modded Blues Deluxe Reissue that handles all my glassy clean gigging needs, and what I really need is a smaller amp that can be pushed to saturation in the home without going deaf. Thinking the Deluxe Reverb will feel too powerful for that.
I have a real authentic original 1965 Princeton reverb. When the cabinet rotted out, I built a head cabinet for it. I use two speaker cabinets normally, usually together. I use a 12-inch EV speaker in one and a 10 inch Eminence signature George Alessandro vintage voiced speaker in the other cabinet. I own 16 different guitars of all types.....and over 30 pedals.... I HAVE NEVER NEEDED OR WANTED ANY OTHER AMP IN 45 YEARS.
Great demo - many thanks! Really good to hear them with the Celestion Creamback - think the stock speaker sounds better in both instances. The Creamback better suited to British voiced gear, imho.
I had the delux reverb. I used a tube screamer with it and a Roland delay peddle. It was the best amp I’ve ever heard. Nothing better. Became very versatile with those two peddles. Great amp. Played with that amp for 10 years in an indie band. it was a wonderful amp.
very thorough reviews. good job. having owned both (i still have the prri 65), the tone stack was definitely more mid-focused on the drri. thanks for pointing out the differences in the tremolo circuits. it's quite glorious on the drri, but seriously lacks on the prri. all things considered, i chose to keep the princeton. i don't gig much. i mainly just home record. the pr was always a favorite for recording, and the ri still delivers in that department. good job, buddy!
The tone Stacks are identical according to the schematics. The majority of the tonal differences are from the speaker. The other differences in tone probably are because the deluxe has more gain stages. Other than that the circuits are pretty similar they even use the same Transformers. The deluxe has a choke but I wouldn't think that would make a difference in the tone. The reason the vibrato sounds different is because the vibrato circuits are different. The deluxe uses a Optoisolator in the vibrato circuit.
No, the Princeton is not “class a” The brightness you notice with the deluxe is due to the bright cap on the volume knob. The flubby low end on the Princeton is not due to the 10” speaker (10” speakers are by nature TIGHTER), the flubby low end is due to the phase inverter design difference in the amps
Hi Jake, I enjoyed your video. I believe I have decided on the Princeton, I will be building the Mojotone kit. Did you prefer the 10 in speaker or the 12? I appreciate your feedback.
Thanks for vid. I"m trying to decide whether to go Princeton, or Deluxe at the moment, so this is really helping me to clear up my thoughts. My head says the Princeton is the most sensible option because I'm mainly playing at home for my own pleasure. But when I've demoed them in the shop the Deluxe has the sound and response I want, i think the low end is where the big difference is. Even though the Deluxe is 22w and I read lots of comments about it's 'wall shaking' volume, it doesn't sound as loud to me as my Wem Dominator did (15w), and I used to get away with cranking that thing on Weekends in my flat, without complaints ;) It was also really useful to hear the Princeton through a 12inch speaker. I've heard some other demo's of Princeton's that come with a 12inch speaker (stock) and they sound better to me than the 10inch, it got me all confused ;P. But hearing them side by side is helpful. I think it's going to have to be Deluxe, the saggy low end response of the Princeton just isn't what i'm looking for. Tasty playing as well my friend ;)
Toby thank you! Glad you enjoyed my video. Both amps are amazing amps! Both have their perks and downsides. I have to say, my rig right now is my Princeton going into an Eminence EM12. A lot of the princeton sag is due to that 10in speaker it comes with (low power handling) the EM12 handles something crazy like 250 watts. Very clean sound! You can hear my princeton on my most recent posts
Correction. There is only 1 channel on a Princeton reverb. There are 2 inputs with the first input about 3db louder than the second. Deluxe has 2 channels. Nice review. Nice playing. Both are AB class ( push-pull). Vibro Champ is class A.
The Deluxe seems to have a more mid focused and smoother tone, more akin to my Ceristone OTS mini (Dumble clone) amp, so I lean towards that tone. The Princeton sounds great but as the more traditional scooped blackface tone. Both great but different.
Thanks. Just bought a DRRI; thinking about a different speaker... I'll checkout the Creamback and 'maybe' a Neo Creamback (less weight for this old dude). The Princeton sounds remarkably good (I never auditioned because I thought it wouldn't have enough headroom) and could easily give me a similar sound (with less weight) at most small venues. So thanks again :-)
Princeton is better choice for bedroom and general around the house solo playing, and at times you'll be able to crank it and hear the power tubes in their full glory. It's general tone stack is a bit warmer to Bergen with. It's smaller cabinet makes it easier to move around and takes up a bit less floor space. The Deluxe Reverb is better for small band/controlled band use. Even when cranked the DR has limited breakup. Plenty more videos on both models to help you decide.
They’re both damn great. I think the ultimate medium is a Princeton with a 12 inch speaker. can’t go wrong with either one but I’d you need one then I’d get the deluxe to keep you safe if you end up doing larger gigs
Markonefifteen the deluxe is just that tiny bit louder,. My rig right now is my princeton into an Eminence EM12. Id look up the EM12.. it is very funny to put into a princeton! The dang speaker is basically the size of the amp! But whoa.. the clean tones
Daniel Gonzalez thank you! And i love them both for different things. I believe the Princeton gets more of the SRV lenny tone.. and maybe more similar too the super. But the deluxe is amazing in different ways.. both are awesome. For me i love the Princeton cos i can keep it low volume and carry it easily to jazz gigs!
Fantastic Demo. Truly one of the Best I have ever seen. Your S.R.V. Licks & Tone are spot-on. How did you get that Infinite Sustain at the very beginning of the video ? I just bought that exact amp. 65 PRRI. I love it. Better then expected. I keep my Volume on 3 ( in the 2nd input ) for NYC Apartment usage. What a Heavenly tone ( with my vintage strat ). In your demo ( however ) I prefer the Clean Headroom at Higher Volume on the Deluxe. Maybe a 12" Replacement Speaker for my 65 Princeton ? Which one to Buy, to Retain that Fender Pristine Chime ???
Michael Caz i would personally keep your 10” in there! Thats the exact way i use mine at my house! Input two and 3 or 4 on the volume with a tube screamer! Unreal right!! The deluxe does sound great loud i will admit.. but the Princeton does tooo! And thank you v much for the kind words!
Appreciate your Input. You are a great player. Such a well-thought-out and Thorough Demonstration. What about the Sustain ? Was that just the Princeton and a Tubescreamer ? Im using a Fulltone OCD and a Thorpy FX Fallout Cloud ( among other modulation pedals ).
To me the Princeton has a clarity the deluxe doesn't have. It just has a better overall sound quality, seems more expressive and sensitive to picking force. I've owned both these amps, currently a tweed Princeton with the Cannabis Rex 12" speaker. I think either one is as good as it gets for true tone and also reverb. If the Princeton is a Class A amp it's news to me. It's my understanding A-B amps cancel out even harmonics and could explain the difference if true?
I'm trying hard to pick between the deluxe, the princeton and the super sonic. I leaning hard to the super sonic head because I have a 2×12 8ohm 50 watt Canibis rex cabinet. This helped. Keep it up bud.you got chops.
Wonderful video! Can you tell me - How high do you have to set the DRRI to sound comparably loud as the PRRI at volume setting 4-5? The PRRI at 4-5 sounds great, and as far as I remember, the DRRI needs to be at at least 3 to sound good. Here in Norway, I've never had the chance to try them both at the same time. English is my second language, hope my question is clear enough. Keep up the good work! :)
Holy moly... that's all I got to say. I' be curious to see how the Deluxe compares to the new '64 handwired Deluxe. Have you had a chance to test it or compare the 2? Fantastic comparison video man!
Sick review mate, and awesone playing aswell. How can you handle having the amps past volume 3? My ears would be ringing and screaming at me for days mate.
I have the Princeton. It's a great amp! I did put in a Cannabis Rex so I could push it harder. Lost a tiny bit of glass, but it's great! Nice demo here. Recommend Bluebird Overdrive. You need nothing else!
