i took this off the internet: Since the Warriors are over the salary cap, they must have Cousins’s Bird Rights to be able to offer him a max contract. A team doesn’t get a player’s Bird Rights until they have been with the team for 3 years. The most the Warriors can offer Cousins in 2019 is a 20% raise - about $6.4 million - with 5% raises year on year. If he signs another 1 year deal in 2019, in the summer of 2020, he would qualify for ‘Early Bird’ which means he can sign for 175% of his previous salary - about $11.2 million. It’s not until 2021, after 3 years with the team, when he would eligible for a max contract. So, in theory, this is possible but not until 2021-22 and only if Cousins signs a series of short terms deals. In reality, it’s incredibly unlikely to happen for a couple of reasons. For starters, to deserve a max contract, Demarcus Cousins would likely have demonstrated a recovery from his injury. This would mean in the summers of 2019 and 2020, his value on the free agent market would be well in excess of what the Warriors would be able to offer. He’d have to leave potentially $20-30 million and years of guaranteed financial security on table. Secondly, since the Warriors are already in the luxury tax and seeing repeater tax penalties, the financial cost of keeping a team with potentially five max contract players might just be too high. In fact, even without Cousins, it’s been estimated that by 2020-21, the Warriors total payroll bill (salaries + luxury tax) would be close to $450 million. Even now, there are questions about the owner’s resolve and whether they will choose to keep the team together long-term if it costs them $100+ million in losses each year. Throwing in another max contract would be insane financially, even for the richest billionaires. Honestly, to overcome both these huge obstacles would take something incredible.
