Hello everyone! This video is based on the memoir on Dianna De la Garza, all of Demi's past documentaries, and other various news stories. I wanted to unpack how generational trauma and early stardom impacted Demi Lovato. Demi has done and experienced so many things in their life and it's so fascinating when all the pieces are put together.
Also. Demi Lovato goes by they/them which I will be using.

i used to say "gyped" all the time but apparently from what i understand now its offensive to romani people bc its derived from the word gypsy which is also seen as something hurtful. not sure how many people see that word as hurtful but i just wanted to let you know in case! anywayss, i loved the video and im so excited for the rest of this series :D

I haven't watched the video yet, but this comment made me obliged to quote (almost) a sentence from Diana's book: "What do you say to your fifteen-ear-old child that comes home wasted at five Am when she's the one paying the bills?" I hate Diana. I still believe she shouldn't have become a mother in the first place. It was that moment when I wanted to get into the book and punch the narrator.

"Demi just drinks with strangers until 4 in the morning" Ooft. It's crazy that hearing someone say that about Demi Lovato made me realise how scary of a thing that is to do, because I was doing this until very recently. I've never had issues with drugs and I've never been an alcoholic but I easily could have been because I used to binge drink on nights out pretty badly. All my friends would go home at like 2 or 3, and I'd find a random group of people and end up staying out til 8am at some random stranger's house (in the UK some clubs don't close until about 7am and then people have after parties up in to midday). I loved Demi as a teenager because of how much I could relate to them with their mental health and self esteem struggles and now as an adult I'm realising I relate to them with some of their substance issues as well. I can't say I'm a fan any more, they've done and said too many things that have rubbed me the wrong way, but I really sympathize with them because I know what it's like when you're in that party mindset and you feel on top of the world and you forget what danger you're in.

the thing about the grey's anatomy episode that non fans don't have the context for is that that particular doctor had a history of schizofrenia in his family, having cared for his own mother and younger siblings who all had it, and he noticed Demi's character was too lucid to be having a mental episode, so he realized she was just a kid who was too desperate from the pain they were feeling. that season was the doctor's whole arc in pediatrics and showing how he stands up for his patients despite the behavior of the parents. basically it was his character growth, which had been happening before Demi's episode and continued after as well.

What you failed to mention is that Demi really got noticed by Disney after Selena Gomez was cast in Wizards Of Waverly Place. Selena would take Demi with her to tapings of Wizards, during breaks in the taping the people in the audience would goof around and sing, so when the people at Disney heard Demi singing they wanted to know more about Demi. im not 100% sure if it was confirmed, like if she has said specifically. but the mention of her age tells you enough. she was 15, which means it had to have happened during 2007 or early 2008 before she turned 16 in august. she started filming camp rock in 2007. camp rock 2, princess protection program and sonny with a chance started filming in 2008 - 2009. and since she was new-er during the filming for her first movie, it makes sense to me that she'd be taken advantage of and ignored. since she was only just building a name for herself and couldn't back out.

You wouldn't be completely incorrect in your belief that their substance abuse issues could have started in part due to the accident. One of the reasons we currently have the opioid crisis we do is bc up until the 2010's many doctors were prescribing heavy duty drugs to almost anyone (even minors!) dealing with pain or injuries.

I was a super fan of Disney since As the Bell Rings and Camp Rock. Demi has an incredibly beautiful and powerful voice and is an amazing songwriter. Demi has real talent and I relate do to the background of having an abusive father and divorced parents. I also liked that Demi brought light to talking about ED's and mental illness. However, Demi has made many mistakes and lost herself/themselves many times and it's not just because of Demi's father and trauma with bullying, abuse, and fame, but Demi's mother also played a large role in it. Diana exploited her daughters to live her dreams through them bicuriously and when she hears her daughter was researching ED's and doing drugs and she completely ignored it. She didn't care. She was a passive parent, a terrible parent. Demi needed guidance and support and someone to teach her values and self love. Diana didn't do that. She ignored her daughters when they needed her most and didn't help them when they needed it. In the videos with Selena, it's obvious Demi was very sweet and down to earth once before Diana's lack of care and parenting and the Hollywood industry abuse and addiction destroyed Demi. I really hope one day, Demi can have good guidance and learn self love and self worth and actually become happy and healthy.

I think Diana's had a lot of unhealthy body image standards after being a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader because of the way they get treated and how they get benched for gaining weight. I watched the show and the women are atrocious to the cheerleaders and overly harsh and critical over their bodies. I think from that and being a Pentecostal, Diana probably had a lot of internalized misogyny and unhealthy body standards and she probably played a big role in Demi's body image issues and eating disorders. I always thought Demi was beautiful because she was curvy, but I wonder if Diana made Demi feel bad about being big boned and not built like a toothpick like my mom did to my sister. Also, while I think Demi's curves are beautiful, she clearly either still has hate and insecurities over her body that she is projecting onto girls who are built smaller than her or she picked up on her mother's behavior. The way Demi body-shamed Zendaya and the girls in the "Bad Blood" video was atrocious and uncalled for, but I think it's because Demi's jealous because Demi wishes she/they looked like them instead of being glad for the beautiful curves Demi has because Demi has been taught my her mom that if she is not super duper extra skinny, she's fat and so Demi might hate and resent the girls who are built smaller and that's just wrong. I wish Demi would realize that her/their body is beautiful and she/they doesn't need to resent girls who are built smaller. We all have different, BEAUTIFUL body types. Demi doesn't like it when people shame her/their body type, so Demi should not d the same to others. I'm glad Zendaya's dad stood up for her, now that is a good father!

She was 10 at the time and the company wanted to hire a 10-year-old singer/actress because the show was in honor of the company's 10th anniversary. Why did lending company need a musical? Why was my mom involved? I don't know. But I do know that my mom says when Demi auditioned they asked her to sing and she sounded like a grown woman, and then they asked her to sing like a little girl and she could do both. I also got to meet and go bowling with her. I was 5.

@@monarch3495 demi's character was named haley. i'll be using that name. the story goes - haley had been showcasing concerning and harmful behaviour for a while. her parents had tried their best to get her diagnosed and treated. starting with medical doctors and eventually being told that she most likely had a mental illness, specifically schizophrenia. unfortunately, haley continued to act out, by harming herself. she ended up back in hospital, in grey's. and just like before, her self inflicted injuries were treated, tests were run to ease the minds of her parents, while she was called "crazy". during her visit, she took a syringe, that had drugs in it, and threatened to kill herself with it, by stabbing it in her chest. believing it may damage her heart. before she could do so, a male doctor convinced her to give back the syringe. that same male doctor was apart of her treatment, he had spoken to her parents and was quite taken with this case. eventually, he had a lightbulb moment. he thought that it may be possible that instead of being mentally ill, she simply had a small hole in her ear that meant she could not only hear everything going on inside her body, but everything outside of her was then increased. he had a camera watch her eyes, while she held her nose and blew. the sound and vibration from her blowing affected her, sending her eyes to go back and forth before she freaked and took off the headset. after seeing her reaction, he declared that he had diagnosed her. they did the surgery, closing the hole. when she woke up, he asked how she was feeling and she gleamed with joy, saying she felt 'good'. almost in disbelief, and relief. i actually thought it was pretty good. it showed how neglectful those working in medicine can be, critiscising how she had been branded as insane because they couldn't find a quick reason and solution. showed that there truly is so many little things that can go wrong, that can impact us. and that all it takes is someone to listen and care. her parents cared to push for answers and the male doctor didn't brush off her constant begging for help, or her "im not crazy" 's. demi's acting was pretty good, especially for her age and experience (being mainly a disney channel actress and only being 17.)

She doesn't get get a lobotomy on Grey's Anatomy. Alex, the peds surgeon realises she doesn't have schizofrenia because half of his family does and he grew-up taking care of his mum and watching for the symptoms. The character Lovato plays turns out to have moving spots in her eyes and other sensory problems that were driving her 'insane' and were making her appear so to the untrained eye. Not a stellar plot but not as dumb as you remember it.

Also although I get that the book might be cathartic and that she might thing she helps others with her story it feels like she makes money out of someone's traumatic teenage years.

I grew up around Demi Lovato, and my Mother even taught her older sister, Dallas. I'm kinda glad I never interacted with her, because I knew several people who had bad interactions with her. When she says she was bullied, it's more that she was a bully and the system failed back on her. After Camp rock some of my mom's best students came forward being physically abused by Demi in middle school. Vic Mignogna is also from the same area and I have equally greatful that I haven't run into him, I had friends that had less than good experiences with him. I don't know anyone who knew Nora Jones but she's also from my area... and Game Stop headquarters is there too. Also Skyscraper was written by Estonian Singer and song Writer Kerli. From what I remember Kerli was not fond of the song, I think her original version may still be floating around on RU-vid, but it was a fan upload from a leak long ago.

A few things we never really new until years later came out in demis documentaries especially the series you have to pay for on yt. Including that she was sa multiple times and that she does not have bipolar. (I suspected the latter because of ways she'd described what she was mainly struggling with). But alot of her childhood in her house I never really knew. All this information is so scattered across the years and its clear demi wanted to protect people but also was in forms of denial.

the greys anatomy episode basically was the girl having a small hole in her inner ear, making it so she could hear EVERYTHING in her body. her blood running, blinking, heartbeat, and it was driving her crazy. they repaired the hole & she was just fine because she couldn’t hear her body anymore. which yanno, she would most likely have a ton of trauma from the condition, & wouldn’t be smiling jumping up and down after surgery, but whatever greys anatomy is a load of bull 🤣

Pretty unrelated, but they did say what was wrong in the Grey’s Anatomy episode. It was something along the lines of like, there being a hole inside of her ear that was effectively causing her to hear everything that was going on inside of her body. All the organs working and blood flowing and it was essentially driving her crazy, making her believe she was hearing things.
