Putting together an outstanding demo reel is a great way to showcase your work as a creative professional -- and it's often a determining factor in landing a gig or a job interview.
Full Sail University recently hosted Sony Picture Imageworks' Vice President of Global Academic Relations Ken Maruyama on campus. Ken spoke to students about his company's work (their visual effects artists and animators have worked on films such as Alice in Wonderland, OZ: The Great and Powerful, and Men in Black 3). Ken also shared insight about what Sony Picture Imageworks looks for in resumes, portfolios, and demo reels. We were able to sit down with him prior to his presentation so that he could share his top five demo reel tips.

Your tips help me a lot in my upcoming demo reel, especially when you mention about "make someone laugh" that may create a different feature in my reel. The choice of music is also an important aspect that I should consider about it. Thank you for your tips. Much appreciated

Every reel sent to me had music playing during the video which made it flow but I want to also see how their audio editing skills are too so I would prefer a reel without music when it comes to feature film reels.

I have had used guys that reviewed my reel and shown me what I've done good and bad. It was 100 bucks but it did worth it, as those were guys from studios.

I'm learning a bunch and I'm curious. Do animators look for scores and instrumentals the same way film makers do?

What is "music that calls attention to itself?" What does that even mean?
@deniss.6205

He means it shouldn't steal the attention from the work, rather than harmoniously accompany the work
