dont worry you wont learn anything about how the EU works from this video anyway first of all they are calling it a democracy which it isnt switzerland is a real democracy in europe electing officials is what occurs in a REPUBLIC but thats not as clean as lying and saying democracy because if you say democracy people think that their vote matters and it doesnt now when you elect EUmps that is a republic system however the european union isnt democractic it isnt even republic because the officials in the EU with real power arent elected at all they are selected by those already running the union so its a bureaucracy they answer to themselves and no one is elected to run the union so dont ever believe anyone who says anything about the EU and calls it democractic that is a flat out lie its a super state and any "countries" that join the EU are no longer countries and are actually just states like florida or new jersey

@ You are wrong on so many levels! Have you not heard about the direct and indirect democracy? They are both democracies... Switzerland is not a "real" democracy, they are an indirect democracy and organized as a confederate union of smaller states. They have unusual laws so that they hold elections on many topics that are direct democracy, but they don't have direct democracy for everything. Mostly big important things like constitutional changes, but they can also start a referendum if enough people sign off for it. However they are not the only country to have citizen initiative. You are so wrong to say that the EU isn't a republic, because it is organized like a republic. More importantly it is a Union of states, not a federation or even a confederation, but more loosely tied union of states. The individual states have a lot of say and the EU it self has a small bureaucracy that do not affect much, mostly just interstate issues. Nothing get's done in the EU without the consent of the EU Parliament and nothing get's done without the consent of the EU council (of ministers). The European Council (The head of the EU, filled with the heads of the member states) decides the direction of the EU, they direct what issues and policies the Commission should work on. The commission simply takes orders and does it's best to create proposals that are suitable. Then they have to agree with both the parliament and EU council, through countless revisions and changes until a compromise is reached that suits everyone good enough. So to say that the EU is undemocratic or that voters have no say is absolutely ridiculous!

@ Wrong again! When Ireland rejected the treaty, the EU took their issues into consideration and changed it until the Irish found it satisfactory to pass it. They did not vote on the exact same thing every time. The EU is not a federalist union like the USA, not by a long shot! In the US the member states have no right to leave the union. The US has a federal military as well as a federal government that impacts all of society on all levels. The US is federated to such an extent we call it a country! The EU does not have an army, the EU government is small in comparison with little power or role. Mostly being a compromise machine for interstate affairs. The EU is not considered a country, the power is more in the hands of the member states that have the freedom to run their own wildly different systems. In the EU member states have the right to leave the union. In the US they all have the dollar, but in the EU many countries don't use the Euros and have their own central banks and their own currencies. So the EU is nowhere close to what the USA is, that's a ridiculous claim! You're just spouting propaganda you've heard elsewhere. Don't you realize you have been tricked into believing bullshit? You've been taught to hate the EU by nationalists who can't even form any valid arguments so they have to resort to lies and half truths.

The ability to veto or vote down the bills in the EU sounds powerful but it basically makes you a break pad. The best use you could have is stopping a catastrophe but you're really in no way responsible for the direction the vehicle is moving. It will get there eventually despite your protests.

But even so in this state it is now it is at least something we can influence and make sure actually jump on those brakes from time to time. And while it actually has a hard time stopping legislation, by slowing down the process it helps form it, chaining it for the better. That is not to it always make legislation that pass though it good, that is a bit of a subjective opinion to being with, but I feel it at least make it better then it would. But again I want to see the parliament have more power in the hopes we would get more direct influence rather then the indirect power we have now. ^_^

If your votes cannot remove or propose legislation than you have no control. You just end up with what we already have. Just push for the vote over and over until it passes. Breaks don't stop if you just keep flooring it until they fail.

But also put pressure on your national assemblies. Like the video points out the other institutions are indirectly elected to. Also by putting pressure on the system we might change it so it becomes a more direct democratic process. But if you do not know how the system works, and you let other decide for you, then who knows how it will turn out. Likely not in your favour. In the end if you do not use what power you have then you do not really have the right to complain. You may not like the system, I don't. But it won't change on it own.

@@Cythil It's designed not to change. Do you think it was accidental that the people ended up with token power in the first place? It wasn't a mistake, it is working as intended. The EU is a massive trade and regulatory body, which means like all such bodies its entire purpose is to accept money from the people who they're supposed to be regulating and regulate in such a way as to prevent new competition from sprouting up. The EU is the 4th reich, Germany finally got control of Europe and now they beg to stay.
