M23 rebels have closed in on the capital of North Kivu as fighting with government forces escalates in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hundreds of thousands of people are arriving in Goma in the hope of finding food, water and shelter.
This situation is expected to worsen when UN peacekeepers withdraw from the country at end of this year.
Can lasting peace be achieved?

The should've let him speak with that being said it's extremly disengenious from him one moment to say "not all crimes are committed by M23" then the next moment to say that where they are there is no crimes.. Yes, the government and some of those armed groups have bloods on their hands but the biggest problem is Rwanda hidding behind M23. It's not an ethnic conflict more than abt DRC minerals.

Some eat Tutsi people. No matter what the M23 wants this triggers a trauma response. The government wants to keep pumping for oil and other minerals too same as some rebel groups. Those oil blocks will be build no matter what displacing thousands of people again. The last bits of forests are sacrificed for money and the people are not getting better of that.

It’s okay, they will call every rwandaphone a Rwandan and then connect it to kagame. I don’t want to be called Congolese, but the borders made it so that I am a Congolese. It’s so disrespectful to make me seem like I’m a Rwandan just because I speak the same language as other Tutsis in East Africa. Will you go to Uganda and call the Tutsis there Rwandans as well?

Hey AJ, next time tou talk to the DRC minister, please ask him, when DRC government signed a peace deal with CNDP, which later gave birth to the current M23 group after the government failed to honor her part of the agreement, did the government sign it with Rwanda? How come today the people involved in the talks are considered Rwandans! This willful ignorance by Tshisekedi regime that attempt to attribute all her inefficiencies to Rwanda will never bring lasting peace to DRC. It will only exacerbate it.

That's not practical. We have different languages, history and overall way of life. some of the fights in some african countries are between citizens of different ethnic groups. How do you realistically see billions of people sharing not only resources but their problems as well. People must fight for peace amongst themselves in their own countries and only ask for help from others. There is no such thing as a global citizen. We all ancestrally belong to a particular location.

Forget all of that. Is M23 helping Rwanda become one of the leading world exporters of coltan? The national origin of this criminal band is not what matters. What matters is the reason they remain well-armed to do devilishment in Eastern Congo, to the detriment of Congolese people. The gentleman from Nairobi is talking rubbish. Burundi and Uganda are not involved in the fight for Goma. Burundi even closed its border to Rwanda recently. While Uganda has been fighting the ADF in DRC, in collaboration with the DRC army FARDC for more than 2 years now. Why is there no questions about that the DRC govt. is supporting the FDLR ? Thats the main reason the Congo wars started in 1996, in the first place.
