it's hilarious and scary at the same time, in 5 or 10 years we'll all be fined for saying "offensive" words. this movie to me represents the extreme of "cancel culture" and an infantilizing society. also, even if there are good sides like a clean city, it's not for everybody, there will be people in power abusing the system and poor people marginalized. it's not an utopia, its a dystopia, the society presented in this movie is a nightmare, and we are not very far from becoming it.
@GuukanKitsune
@GuukanKitsune 11 месяцев назад
@pelgervampireduck But if you pay attention, the city below is the exact opposite and has all the freedoms the surface lacks and none of its rules... and is JUST AS MUCH OF A NIGHTMARE. Unbound freedom is easily JUST AS BAD as extreme order. They are each strong where the other's weak and weak where the other's strong and only by WORKING TOGETHER did the day get saved. The point of the film's social lesson is stated by Spartan. "You need to get a little dirty. And you need to get a lot clean. And somewhere in the middle, we'll make it work." BOTH societies don't work and for different reasons. Only toeing the line along the middle, not the extremes, is the way forwards. SOME rules. SOME freedoms. But not nothing but one or the other. That is the only society that functions.

My favorite theory from all the comments I've seen on the 3 seashells is that they're control knobs for bidet functions. Apparently, the reason they picked seashells for the script is because someone had some as bathroom decoration and they went with it. Perhaps some time after bidets became more of a standard, someone made a seashell themed knob set and that just took off.

It's important to remember that when this movie was made, the US was at the end of the crime surge of the 70's thru 90's. In 1993 when this was released, the murder rate was 9.4 per 100000. That's double our current rate. There was a fear that the society was teetering on the edge of complete breakdown.

Great reactions as always, it's fun to know that here in the UK, references to Taco Bell were changed to Pizza Hut, as Taco Bell was virtually unknown in many foreign countries at the time. So they had the actors, including Sly, dub the words 'Pizza Hut' over the Taco Bell lines, plus changing the logos on the windows of the restaurant. Hilarious, well worth watching this version to see how badly dubbed it is!! 🤣

Judge Dredd is not nearly as good as Demolition Man. Plus, for someone like me, who grew up reading Dredd comics every week, it really pisses on source material and does not at all understand it. Karl Urban' s 2012 Dredd was 1000 times better, and really understood sho and what Dredd was supposed to be. Before that movie, Robocop was really the closest that we got to Dredd, without actually being Dredd. I didn't grow up reading Spiderman comics, but i guess that my reaction to Stallone's Dredd is that similar to that of Spiderman fans to Venom, or X-Men comic fans to Deadpool in X-Men Origins.

Between Sly, being the action hero he was/is, Wesley being in a bunch of movies we enjoyed between 1991 and when this came out, and Dennis Leary's song "Asshole" having just been a massive hit here in Australia, we were already hooked but the movie is just so much fun it became an instant favourite. I just wish there was more Dennis Leary in it. His rant about the ratbugers and what he and his people want is a thing of beauty (the man can rant like no other!). Plus this was my first Sandra Bullock movie, and then Speed came out a couple of years later so that cemented my love for her. If you ever want to do a side quest from the new Stallone-athon, can I suggest White Men Can't Jump.
