not really, waddle dee existed with the bandana before return to dream land, and nobody cared, he actually first appeared in the megaton punch mini game, his appearance was brief and insignificant making it rather baffling that in super star ultra he was made king dedede's right hand man in revenge of the king, and has ever since been a vital part of the series who appears in every game. tldr: the bandana didn't make people like him or even notice him, it was when he was given a personality that people starting caring.
More specifically it was when he was made a playable character that people started caring. I feel the joke was apt. It was accurate. Nobody cared. Then you put that one with the bandana up, made it playable, and people cared. Still think the guy should at least have a name. He’s called bandanna waddle dee. It makes it seem like the bandanna is the special part, not him.
@@hi-ougidemonfang bullshit, the joke is not apt, first because of what i already said and stand by, but also because the joke wasn't about him being playable making him popular but the bandana making him popular, fundamentally untrue even going by your timeline where he became popular in return to dream land because he still appeared in super star. furthermore it still doesn't change the fact he became popular because he had a good personality, kirby games have a bunch of playable characters nobody cares about, but bandana dee stuck around because even without dialogue he proved himself to be a worthwhile character just like the rest of the main cast.
@@Nameandaddresswitheld Okay but Super Mario Land 2 and 3 were such fat W's for the gameboy that they made an entire mascot who is literally a Fat W(ario)
Ah, so this is the reason why Firebrand was in all those Capcom Vs games. Good for him! Though it is weird how the RED Arremer’s default sprite looks more orange then red.
I love this game to death despite having no chance without the rewind feature Edit: went back and beat it without rewind. It’s not nearly as hard once you know what the bosses are weak to and I’d also missed so many bosses and health upgrades on previous playthroughs
A small detail I remember finding when I played this game is that some of the demons in the village will actually say different things to (or about) you depending on which Crest you have equipped. It's a small detail, but something that really drove me towards trying to find all the Crests as a kid.
This is why I love this channel - I never know what to expect. Sometimes you're talking about super-popular stuff like Ultrakill and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance: other times you're talking about obscure hidden gems like the Gargoyle's Quest series. Another great video here!
There's a reason I picked up speedrunning this game after finishing a casual playthrough of it some years back! Always happy to see this game get yet more love out on the wide world of the internet. Tight movement that you can quickly get very good at, bosses that are tough as nails but you can eventually nail down their patterns, but man the best part is the music. Dark, gothic, haunting, even at its most triumphant. Big agree of it being one of the best on the SNES.
If you end up seeing thus, I Just want to say this channel is incredible, funny and engaging. Just found your channel a few days ago with my first introduction being the pokemon video which I watched for the first, and second and third, time the other day, and that one convinced me to sub all its own, I hope all your stuff continues to grow, later.
I was one of those schmucks who never heard of this series of games before, but now I have the urge to go quickly play them all. You could have easily been an amazing salesman if you wished too.
Never have I imagined that this game was a spin-off from ghost and goblins, explains the difficulty through out the entire game. As a kid I could never beat it except one time where I accidentally got the bad ending. I might go back to it one day
"The Best Game You've Never Played" Me who has this game is his top 10 favourite games: "Do not cite the deep magic to me Witch! I was there when it was written." EDIT: I do find it a little weird though that they never gave him his most defining attack from his debut, his trademark swoop.
@@floofiekun1875 Oh it probably wouldn't have worked in Demon's Crest, and it DEFINITELY wouldn't have worked in Gargoyle's Quest. I find it weird that they made a game which it wouldn't have worked well in though. But they did give him his hover and that's even more necessary so it's all good.
I have no idea how younger me found it but I'm glad they did. I adored this game when I was younger and still do, even though it kicks my ass, the atmosphere is simply amazing. I come back to it now and then. You must play this as if what Bumbles said is not enough.
@@augustridder9885 Blasphemy! Rabbids are perfection in animated forms the insinuation that someone saying they don't like Rabbids is practically the same as saying they don't like breathing. From the TV show to the Mario crossover there is not a single flaw in any Rabbids material and the fact that you would dare say that even a single person out of the 7.3 billion of us doesn't like the Rabbids should be crime with the punishment of death.
Rabbids have various forms but in order to be considered a grunt, there has to be a superior that is a different species all together. There's a reason why although there is a King Goomba, he doesn't have that much power over Mario's world. Or there's a reason why King triple D isn't a waddle but has a handful of them as servants. Rabbids are more a wild subspecies than grunts.
@@ChaseVaccaro-ge3gk Retracting my earlier comment, there are people of the same species that can be superior like an alpha. As far as Bowser yes he's a koopa, but he controls the Troops, not ALL of the koopas (there are games that established that some koopas are peaceful). I guess it's more accurate to say that Rabbids in general are not grunts because they're like the Minions except they don't search for a 'boss". They are like a swarm with no queen (as far as I know).
When I played through demon's crest on the switch online service, I did it blind, so I didn't know about the air gargoyle. I'm pretty sure I did the wind tower first, but I didn't get the air crest until I had done pretty much everything else and looked it up. Honestly I think I enjoyed the game more not being able to skip over sections with the air gargoyle.
This game is amazing. Passed it back in the 90s and still in awe when I replayed it about 2 years ago. One of the best game in the snes or any console.
Your intros continue to be a major highlight. You're very skilled at providing context. I first encountered Demon's Crest well after release. I borrowed it about 15 years ago from a friend's then-girlfriend who wound up with her brother's SNES collection. I was floored by the game's atmosphere, but I didn't get very far before I had to return it. Fast forward to much later, and I wound up getting that very cartridge in exchange for my extra SNES Classic. I didn't give the game a proper go, however, until it hit Switch Online. In retrospect, it does seem really weird that so many abilities and items are redundant, but that selection does allow for a great variety of new player experiences. For example, I didn't get the air form for a very long time and fought both Belth and Flier without it.
I LOVE this game. I Need a new one. Not just because I live for metroidvanias, but also because it's a super cool setting. Like a World of Castlevania's aesthetic.
It's also notable for its lack of human interaction. They are barely a footnote in the story, so it's all the politics and structure of the Demon Realm. So it'd be like if you had a Castlevania game that focused on the hierarchy of Dracula's court, and did not concern itself with Transylvania at large. And wasn't Kid Dracula.
You'd think that some romhacker would have already gotten the idea to mix assets from Demon's Crest, Metroid, Super Castlevania, and Dracula X together into the ultimate creepy SNES metroidvania... Sadly, I'm no romhacker.
I still can't get over that Firebrand is in not only SVC: Chaos and MVC, but like, none of his moves are taken or inspired by Demon's Crest. Like, it should've been the most obvious thing!
I loved this game as a kid. I watched my dad play the whole thing. Remember that dragon at the beginning scaring the hell out of me back then. Honestly it still holds up really well today. Thanks for the great video.
Oh my god I haven’t seen anyone bring up the Rocket Slime series in any kind of conversation it’s one of my favorites and it’s really cool seeing it in a video
Um excuse me it was one of my favorite SNES game. I bought it blind for cheap, and never regretted it. It's such a fun game, if a bit obtuse here and there
One of my favorite games I've never 100%ed. At least not that I can remember. IIRC, the shadow spell can do damage to some enemies and bosses if you activate it basically on top of them.
You’re currently making me consider buying this on the 3ds eshop before it closes, so props to your persuasion skills. Also, you’re phenomenal at this stuff, so keep it up!
My theory for why so many returned it is something I can point back to a couple years ago. Y'see, I went to a friend's house, a 90s kid for sure, and we decided at one point to play games on the switch. I don't remember how exactly but he ended up in demons crest, and he could not beat the first boss for the life of him. I ended up giving suggestions because I never played it either, and it ended up working. I think it was that the first boss has a weak point, and you need to shoot the head. That probably did it in for a lot of kids who weren't used to the whole body *not* being a hurtbox. The total opposite could be true as well. Maybe they beat it so easily that they returned it to get something else. I was never someone who traded in games so it's foreign to me, but it seems to be relatively common. ..unless return means unopened. In which case they thought the main character was ugly lol.
My uncle showed me this game on his SNES when I was like, 10. I ended up loving how the game looked and always wanted to play it. I got so happy when I saw that it was on the Switch Online stuff. ^^
Fun fact: If you don't beat the final Arma battle but at least not beat the water and ice palace , you can go to Phalanx Castle and strait to the boss. You just get the first phase and Phalanx fails to use the crest of heaven. You will get the bad ending where Arma appears since he didn't seal himself in the crest of time for you. It's pretty cool.
Always neat to see people talk about this game! ...Mainly because it's got presence in Distorted Travesty, and the more things that I can pretend people care about that game for, the better.
It makes me exceedingly happy to see at least one other person making mention of Namco x Capcom in the comments. Some of the fun stuff it did plot-wise with series like GnG really paved the way for the even funner stuff in Project X Zone games.
Played it, loved it. No idea how it could get negative sales when it was this good. I blame the 'Satanic Panic'. Would love to see Firebrand make a comeback, maybe give him Keith David's voice?
when it comes to Dragon Quest, there's probably no need to even give accessories to grunts to make players care for them because in 5 they added a system to recruit them. This system was then expanded into a spin-off where you fight using a party of 3 monsters that Nintendo Action called a chess game, causing me to miss out on it because they added no illustrations to clarify that they were being metaphorical and/or lying. The monsters were so popular that when DQM Joker had its own Dexit, fans were not happy. Even *palette swaps* were missed once they were gone, that's how attached fans were to their monsters!
I remember beating the dark demon when I was just a kid, my dad and brother never believed me. I couldn't believe it when he died, I just was awe struck, such a hard boss.
This game is really fun! I kinda hope Capcom makes something like this game in the future again. We've been getting some remakes and reboots, so hopefully this game gets the same treatment. It's such a classic
at this point, I would settle for a "Firebrand Mode" in a future G&G. Not caring about the princess, but wanting to slap the hell out of the demon lord at present to set them straight. Maybe even a "what if?" boss fight against Arthur?
@@RotaAbyssian That'd be interesting I think. Though I really want to see a full on Metroidvania Demon's Crest sequel. Man, if I wasn't struggling with coding and working on a game right now I'd like to try my hand at it.
@@floofiekun1875 I would love that, myself.I think I could really sink my teeth into the deep G&G/Demon lore and pull out a really fun story. I think I'd love for it to split the difference tonally between Gargoyle's Quest and Demon's Crest, though sticking to DC's tone would also be fun.
@@RotaAbyssian Yeah! I love how serious and dire the tone of Demon's Crest is compared to the previous entries. The intro and music in the title screen is so epic! And the very first moments when you play the game and you have to run from a zombie dragon before getting cornered and forced to face it is really cool! The different Gargoyle transformations would work well in the exploration based gameplay of a Metroidvania. I think what'd be cool is to do something similar to Demon's Souls. Each area being very sizable that you can choose to tackle at your leisure. I feel that idea works surprisingly well since in Demon's Crest you do get to fly around the overworld, so bringing that back in a sequel and having large areas to explore would actually work really well I think. Maybe have some areas link into each other through paths as well that could offer access to previously unreachable segments of that level would make finding them a lot of fun.
@@floofiekun1875 I could be down with that. Could ape a concept from SCIV/Belmont's Revenge/ Order of Ecclesia where there are multiple Castle esque maps that get explored before a big cronchy final macro castle. If the overworld traversal stays similar, I think a cool encounter would be taking the cutscene idea of when Phalanx jumped Firebrand in the past and have that be an overworld encounter. You're flying around during a certain part of the game, when a general of some sort intercepts and ground you into a previously unseen area. It would either initiate a boss fight immediately, or would be a mini area that leads to the boss that grounded you. I don't know immediately how I would feel about a full on combat sequence in overworld segments, but if implemented well, I wouldn't be opposed.
I never heard of this game. I only know Firebrand as that cool gargoyle from Marvel Vs Capcom. Man for SNES game this game is so beautiful. I love all of the cool monster sprites and the fact that you have different forms is so cool!!
Ah, man, Demon's Crest is one of the SNES's best hidden gems. I remember hearing about it on a Metroid fansite back in the early days of the internet, like 2001 or 2002, and I just had to play it. I convinced my parents to let me buy a copy on eBay, and the red cartridge was so cool. Sadly, I think I sold my SNES copy (I have regrets about selling a lot of my old games as a teen to buy more games, but alas) but I've played it on the Virtual Console of every system that it's available on. Took me forever to beat, like literal years, and I've never beaten the Dark Demon, either. Way too much trouble. I do have to say, that while I agree the game has a phenomenal soundtrack, I still prefer Super Metroid's, but then I am a bit biased towards my favorite game of all time.
Firebrand is so badass, he already finished his entire quest before the game began, and the only reason he lost the crests is that Phalanx got a cheap shot on him when he was recovering from defeating the holder of the most powerful crest of all. And depending on your choices he may waltz straight up to Phalanx and kick his ass in return
As a counter to the air gargoyle you have to consider that 99% of players aren't gonna find it early on. They'll most likely go through the normal stage routes, fight the regular bosses and gain usefulness from items like the platform-fireballs. The game expects you to explore and eventually find the other forms. Going in later with the knowledge of item placements can lead you to planning those new routes and makes the game highly replayable. It's main issues for me come from the lack of quick switch for the fireballs. I understand they didn't wanna animate all the gargoyle forms, they're fine in the pause menu. Switching the fireballs, which doesn't affect Firebrand's sprite, needed quick switch. The Mario 64-style booting from stages feels more annoying here than in Mario 64. Also could a used a few of the first two games' RPG elements, mainly the flight limit early on. It's nice being able to fly forever, the level designs compensate for it, but feel like they'd be even more fun w/that extra platforming challenge before you eventually get unlimited flight. But the games too good. It's flaws don't matter. It is a work of art.
You know dude i like your writing and showing games not many know of. I cant wait for you to tackle the Suikoden series one i love dearly and not many know of.
I vaguely remember owning this gameas a child and having it stuffed inside a small box together with secret of evermore. I think my mom never let me play it. Thinking about it, I still might have the SNES stuff lying about somewhere. I'll look for it.
1:00 You should honestly do a video on Rocket Slime, it's one of those games that's just weird and niche enough to fit this channel. I mean it's the earthbound of Dragon Quest games, in that we only ever got the second game in the series localized and there are people willing to kill to get the 3rd one ported over.
but bandana dee existed before return to dream land, and nobody really cared, admittedly it was brief appearance in megaton punch, but if i know anything about fandoms it's that they're really good at getting overly attached to random background characters. though bandana still ended up being significant before he became playable as in super star ultra he was made dedede's right hand man, and major character for revenge of the kings story, even taking the role of a joke boss and the sole audience of the electrified cage match. in other words it wasn't the bandana that made him a vital part of the series, but his personality that made people give a shit. the bandana's just there to tell him apart, as is the clothing on any other grunt turned beloved character.
35:15 So you’re telling me, Firebrand went on this epic quest, found solace in the end-and then made a new nemesis because some magical knight wants to save a princess that some demon king wants to marry? That’s-funnily epic in a way lol
17:55 holy crap If only I would've known that earlier..... Beating him with just fire and earth was a SERIOUS pain in the backside, but eventually I managed to pull through
