Demon's Souls Boss Battle - Maiden Astraea

Well, the Valley of Defilement represents the disgusting side of humanity, or humanity's deep wound.Everything no one wanted,things that wanted to be forgotten, and things that no one wanted to deal with were shoved in there.Like sick and I think elderly people.Also I pretty sure it mentions that aborted fetuses were thrown down there, something like that.Most likely shit and sewage were also most likely dumped there.Anyway, astraea and garl became disillusioned with their mission because they thought, "What kind of god would let this happen."So she decided to help(I'm certain that she revived those aborted babies in her boss room, which means she most likely helped the others too)the people, attempt to heal the "wound".No one gave a shit about those people but her and garl(maybe garl),which gave the denizens purpose, something which I'm pretty sure they didn't have.Also about the denizens killing people, they most likely hated people in general because well, the people put them their in the first place.Also maybe she needed more souls so she could perform stronger miracles.I don't know about garl, but from his dialogue it seems like he thinks the same way.I think it's sad because she was trying to do something noble, but since she has a demon soul you have to kill her to ultimately stop the fog from spreading.Sorry for the essay but I just wanted to tell you why I think its tragic.

I think you misunderstood Astraea and Vinland's intentions. Astraea is not a demon. Well, at least she wasn't one before she arrived at Valley of Defilement. Her objective was to get rid of the filth there and give the inhabitants actual comfort, Vinland's goal was to protect Astraea with his life. But filth in the Valley took over her and Vinland before they could complete their tasks, and ironically, considering her goal when she arrived at the valley, Astraea became the source of the filth, a demon. Therefore it was left to you to kill Astraea and stop the filth. So I would say this is tragic for all three people: Vinland, Astraea and you.

This boss reminds me of the famous words from Richiter Belmont of Castlevania Symphony. Manking ill needs a savior such as you

@Jimmy Strudel Dark Souls 2 issues are undeniably frequently getting in the way of the game. Its less to do than a bandwagon and more to do with it's broken promises, I have put at least a hundred hours into the game but it's issues hold it back greatly.

+Gideon Winter Yeah but all she wanted was to have a sanctuary for all the beings and creatures that no one wanted around. "...a sanctuary for the lost and wretched." Pretty sad that she used her power for good and you still have to kill her :(

+clevelandtyler2 Sadly, her existence alone helps to expand the fog into the outside world, threatening them with demons. Plus, even if her intentions were good, what was the outcome? The aborted babies were brought back to life only to become morbid creatures in a deep swamp most people would probably die on before they got a chance to love them. The inhabitants, in their worshipping of Astraea as their saviour, hunt down and murder adventurers, knights and many more solely to get their souls and give them to Astraea, increasing her power. Although their intentions are good, the outcomes are terrible! Specially for the people who were sent there simply to find out what happened to Astraea and Garl. Imagina if Garl Vinland's sister had been killed and her soul offered to Astraea? As for her, she may not even approve of such methods, but she's clearly not doing anything to stop her followers. In a way, she has partially been corrupted by the Demon's Soul, accepting horrible things to happen to others in order to acquire more souls. While her intetions are to help the poor and depraved of the Valley, she's actually just feeding the Old One with more souls without realising it. Maybe being too blind to accept that. As for Garl Vinland... his example is the same as Velstadt's. His blind loyalty, although beautiful, has made him turn an eye about what happen to outsiders. Maybe he even starts to distort facts in his own mind, maybe even Astraea do. I mean, many knights and even his sister were sent to find him, yet he claims they were abandoned long ago. He no longer has a grasp of the true reality of things, just like his saint. It's sad, it's unfair, but for the greater good (or evil, depending on your choices), she had to die. And if Garl Vinland will give us no choice but to fight, than sadly he too must die. It's painful, but it must be done.

I'm a gamer for over 30 years but I didn't like them when they came out and only played them like 30-60 minutes back then. A few months ago I tried them again and finished both (starting with Demon's Souls) and I can say I like Demon's Souls much more than Dark Souls (1). I enjoyed Demon's Souls story, level and the whole atmosphere much more than Dark Souls 1. Demon's Souls just kept me motivated to the max unlike Dark Souls which had some areas and moments where I thought "Meh! Do I really have to do this / do I really have to go there?"

+Johnny Cage I agree. I prefer Demon's Souls since it has better lore and atmosphere, second only to Bloodborne. And the story imo is less convoluted to Dark Souls, which you wouldn't appreciate much if you've played Demon's Souls prior, due to uncanny resemblance yet technically different lore and gameplay mechanics.

In short, the boss was going to help for the better world but end up one of the key point of destroying the world. In some point of that, she can't fight to protect herself anymore only those still believe she is still making good.

Like, STARTLINGLY better, yeah. The music is also far superior, but boy does the new voice acting on Astraea disappoint. The sound she makes when she dies is hilarious, not heartbreaking.

totally, the despair in their voices is so much more present here, accompanied by the music which is also better in this version

Sadly this is not the same in the remake, the tone is wayyyyyy off... music is too heroic and triumphant and the voices, especially that last line don't hit nearly as hard :(

im sure there is alot about demon souls i dont know with all the fame dark souls got forbeing multiplatform there is tons of information around and playtroughs , but not for demon souls demon souls is obviously less popular but for those who had a ps3 back then im sure this game gave us all a more exciting ride .. dark souls being the mechanical evolution obviously

SO TRUE. I just finished demon's souls recently, it was the last souls games I played actually, and after beating it I just thought WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THE DARK SOULS GAMES??? Don't me wrong I still like Dark Souls 1 and 2 but HOLY SHIT Demon's Souls was SO much better and idk why the fuck they changed Dark Souls so much.

MatrixAndrAIa I was thinking about "god" you know? Or whoever you might call the good entity in DS. So in that case, is like god abandoned humanity, and then your character is seem as someone sent by "god".

Oh, and besides, Astraea herself tells you that there's nothing for you to pillage or plunder, so maybe they're seeing him as one of the many who came for Boletaria for fame, as is stated on the opening.

The point is, there is no God in DeS, only a mask for the Old One.

@@Jambobist There are ways of enhancing the original music without changing it's soul. For example FF7's original midi keyboard tunes were enhanced very well in its remake. Many themes in demon's souls remake were enhanced well but this one was just not it, it was very heroic and settling.

Except for the fact she basically created a suicidal death cult. She basically turn the village into her own servants and while she did ease the pain the costs was there souls. This was probably the most noble act you could have done because it wasn't the easiest. She wasn't this generic bad guy stroking a cat but she was harmful. Now people can be free to die it might be a harsh lesson but it's probably the most grown up approach you can take.

She has a noble heart but she end up prologue the suffering of the people in that valley for worst. Maybe she was just desperated after all and like "fck it" both God and Demon are not different.
