The original composer didn't usally do ost for games so their style is different from most at least back in the day when it came to games ost of course. Edit: Demon souls has a very movie like ost to it compared to other games its got lots of variety even compared to most fromsoft songs today.
Songs like this are not that common in games, if I didn't know anything about Demon Souls, I would've guessed that this is a song from some fucked up anime, heavy Elfen Lied vibes in some parts. While i enjoy and listen daily to songs from later games, there is something about these songs from the older games that isn't present anymore. Both DeS and DS character creation OSTs are so unique and tranquil and have always stuck with me.
I’m crying because I just realized that this is Kokia singing and she sang the Epilogue song for DSIII...the end of the Soul’s series...she sang at the beginning and she sang at the end...
I remember the trailer for DS3 when it announced playing part of Epilogue and thinking. If they add a few more notes, this could be Return to Slumber. When I beat the game I turned out to be right.
Didn’t she sing in Dark Souls 2 as well? I mean tell me that’s not her voice singing in Shrine of Amana? That’s 3/4 Souls games. Anyone recognize her voice in Dark Souls?
RIP to all those messages and bloodstains left in Demon’s Souls. From 2009 all the way to 2018, this game’s PvP gave me such fond memories I’ll never forget. Umbasa.
I'm glad my pc can run ps3 emulator and because of it I finally played and finished this work of art , love the ost along with the symbolism of it being the lullaby sung by the maiden in black for the old one
Video games are the greatest works of art in my opinion the Mona Lisa or any old as painting can’t have the depth or tell a story like a video game can they literally engulf you and take you to new worlds you never thought were possible and have the ability to make you laugh or cry and make you sad or happy.
@@erikreyes42 Ever heard of books or movies? Each media conveys emotions and thoughts in unique, different ways. Some are conveyed better by a videogame, others in a painting or a book. Don't dismiss a media for its shortcomings, all of them have
@@Mattroid99And they really don't convey as much as video games. In books and the like, you are never the character, so it never felt really personal. But in games, you are the character, you are undergoing the journey. That makes it one of the more superior forms of art.
@@ikmalkamal5830 Just because I control the protagonist doesn't mean that it conveys more than other medias. It just means that it conveys what it does in an unique ways, but some stories that are amazing to read or to watch are terrible to play. For example, spectating something outside our direct control lets us the freedom to see their decisions etc. without having to set it up in a way that is not made towards the player's possibility.
I'm pretty sure this aria is sung by KOKIA (Akiko Yoshida), who also did the female vocals in the opening cinematic as well. She's a trained opera singer, too, which adds such depth and emotion to this song.
Through all the blood, sweat, and tears, you finally reach the Old One, however you are forced to leave behind the one who helped you throughout your entire journey. As the credits role and this song plays, you see images of all the bosses you fought over and over again to defeat. Sad, yet so satisfying at the same time. Such a beautiful ending.
The singer alone in the beginning gives the sensation of someone singing a lullaby for you, them the instruments begins to take place, as your mind along with the beatifull voice takes you to a deep slumber. The pace is slow and the happy change of the music could be related to having a nice dream, them the song returns to it's original pace, near the end it changes to a rather mysterious rythim, and goes back to only the singer remaining. Maybe you woke up, or you just drifted away in the eternal sleep, who knows.
Or maybe the song is reflecting the old one's return to slumber. And the end reveals that we've only postponed the inevitable. That the Old One will awaken again.
+Sean De La Torre Long time reply But it seens that The Souls Series is pretty much "You never free the world of the danger, you only delay the inevitable". Kind sad if you think on it too much. You can't kill the Old One, just make him slumber again to, one day, the cycle begin anew. You can link the bonfires and use your body as fuel for the first flame for a little more time, or just leave and plunge the world in dark.
Well dark souls 3 is about "the end of the world" according to Miyazaki. So I'd imagine we'll get to see what happens once the cycle finally comes crashing down.
I don’t care what people say. The original version of Return to Slumber is better than the new version. I still love the new one, but this… this is absolutely divine.
The new one is just different, and I appreciate it for that but the original feels more "correct" for the mood its trying to envoke. "Slumber", it's in the name. And this one, while pretty and moving, remains fairly stagnant as far as sounds and instrumentation so it maintains a sort of melancholy peace throughout. The new one is more of an epic arrangement, with more swelling sections and loud spots. Sounds great, but doesn't really feel like slumber to me.
@What? ? Older ones were memorable. It needed some upgrade to be more consistent with game graphics upgrade, but composer definitely overdid it. Every OST sounds like generic fantasy, Elden Ring has the same problem.
I don't care what people say. Things are different, and one is not objectively better than the other one, just different. The only thing I think 99% of people would agree on and 100% of sane people is the worst part about the remake is you can fucking delete characters. Oh, and they added a few near useless rings.
This brings me back to when I just completed my 4th and final play through and got the platinum.. I sat there and endured many great waves of emotion listening to this while remembering all the tribulations I faced during my play throughs...
I wish this game could be remastered. There is just something so beautiful about the message Demon's Souls has about humanity. It's one of the most hopeless yet most hopeful games I have ever experienced when I was a kid. Just knowing that despite the state Boletaria is in by the end, the game can still end on a hopeful message that not every human is hungry for power (assuming you just walked away in the end). This kind of ending is something I really wish I could see in a few more games. A lot of developers try and make players feel like the end moment should be epic by having a huge orchestra playing in the background or some long-winded speech about what was won or lost. That's not to say games like that have terrible endings, but Demon's Souls ending is amazing because of how simple it is. The player succeeds in doing the right thing and despite how this should be a victory, this song is like a bittersweet reminder that while the world might be saved, there is so much pain and suffering because of the corruption humanity submitted to beforehand. Only through fighting for those such as Stockpile Thomas, Ostrava, and the Maiden in Black can you see what makes this world worth preserving, even at the expense of the Soul Arts. And how this makes Demon's Souls such a powerful game is how players are the one's who chose to help these characters, with just the gameplay mechanics in hand and not some button prompt shown in a cutscene. Demon's Souls respects the intelligence of its players by letting it own world show us how in disarray everything is, it doesn't need to bog the experience down with needing to explain the fate of every character, and instead it just opts to let players choose for themselves on what kind of person they want to set out to be in a hellish world. And I damn well know that when I chose not to make the same mistake that so many others have made in the end, that there is no better feeling knowing that I chose humanity over total power that corrupts.
DeS is probably the "happiest" game in the entire series. You get a clear choice of the evil path, killing the Maiden and pursuing power, or leaving the Maiden with the Old One as to preserve humanity at the expense of soul arts. Dark Souls 1 completely throws that shit out the window and just says "You either preserve a dying age of fire perpetually, or become the Dark Lord. Either way, you motherfuckers are gonna die." It's probably the most cynical game in the series looking back on it. Not even Dark Souls 3 or Bloodborne were this bleak. It's one of the few games that actually does an ending like this right. The ending of Dark Souls 1 kind of scarred me in a way. It is seriously one of, if not the bleakest game I have ever played. DeS in comparison is oddly hopeful and optimistic and I was shocked to find this out when I first played it. I don't know if Miyazaki hit a mad depression spiral or something but man....
@@theshellderinslowbrostail5422 I just saw the trailer. I'm so glad that Demon's Souls is finally being brought back to the next-gen systems. Hopefully this remaster/remake brings back the one scrapped world we couldn't access in the Nexus.
Not sure why you're crying. The game was maybe only 10 years old to begin with. But maybe I just don't get why gamers get so sentimental about games. Games are not people, and do not feel. They will never care about you. People will. Needless to say I'm excited to be able to play this remake.
I believe all the games FromSoftware has made, from Demon's Souls all the way to Dark Souls 3 are absolute gems all different from each other but still fun as hell to play.
@@dapperdan9034 i love all of them, specially Bloodborne (the reason i bought a PS4). The gameplay in those games is amazing but there's something so artistic and mystical about their storytelling and its lack of exposition. Also the osts are amazing ofc... In the end they're so much more than just games
IIRC this is the credits song, and Nameless is DaS's credits song, so very likely meant to be similar as the games almost mirror each other in some respects.
The magical nostalgia this game gives me of my college days (2011-2015). Back when I was so hooked into the Souls games, it was also a moment I tried new things that would eventually shape my current career and hobbies, met people who who eventually become my lifelong friends, and met a girl who would eventually be with me for the rest of my life. Thank you very much Demon's Souls for all of the wonderful memories you have given to me.
The amount of passion, effort and artistry in this series feels like pearls before swine sometimes. I suppose it is the fate of all massively popular things. Especially in a medium primarily enjoyed by teenagers.
I just noticed that this song is very similar to the darks souls 3 epilogue song. That plays when you beat the game... I never thought that after so many years, I would still be discovering new things...
La Las Not sure what continuation you could write though :/ I mean, you could definitely write any number of stories in the universe, but a story that would be a meaningful continuation to DeS 1’s story and not a retread, that would be tough :(
@@nathanjora7627 i think Demon's Souls being a one shot game is perfect. Only you decide which ending happens. Besides miyazaki doesn't like to make sequels, he only jumped in into DS3 because it was having problems iirc
Makoto I don’t know about your two last assertions, so I’ll only respond to the first : I agree, that was... the point of my first message :| Although wether this game is good as a one shot game and wether you can continue it or not are two different things. DS1 is a really good standalone. DS3 still makes for a great addition to DS1.
all souls games have epilogues with a lullaby, this one is my preferred song from the other lullabys blood borne prolly has one too, but who cares about that game
AmbipomLover69 bloodbourne has a very wonderful soundtrack and is probably the best game bar demons souls because fuck the shit that is dark souls 1 and 2 for dropping the ball for half the game
RIP Demon's Souls 2009 - 2018 The Old One has returned to its slumber, and the Soul Arts are now lost. Bless the countless souls who braved the fog and the demons. Umbasa.
Now the old one awakens once again and its blood stream from the depths to the city of Yharnam. The art of soul and sorcery returns, and soul devouring demons raise havoc once again. Fear the old blood. Yeah, so what I bridge the two games. It make more sense if fromsoft had put more work into it. Not labor but giving us the "true" BloodBorne. Don't forget there were plans for demons to take place in bloodborne from the cut content. Can't say they that's canon, but why not.
This is one of the reasons I consider the soundtrack to Demon's Souls to be the best in the series - There's a different end credit song (both super amazing in their own way) depending on which ending you choose. I think even the credit sequence is different, like different art is shown.
Demons souls has a few good pieces, (Old one, flamelurker, extr) but then you have unremarkable, unmemorable pieces like return to slumber, dragon god, extr. And how does having two pieces of music play for the endings make the soundtrack good? I dont get it.
andrew wheeldon Return to slumber is the most memorable.. it's the theme that played after you beat the game.. it's the song that made you realize that all your hard work is worth it. btw it shows artworks of all the bosses that you defeated. while one who crave souls made you realize that you did the wrong thing. and shows the lonely faces of the NPCs. even if Ostrava is wearing a helmet you could feel the sadness in his soul.
Part of me is terrified to play the Remake myself. It looks to be amazing. I know I still want to play it when I eventually can get a PS5... but.... The tone of the game seems... horribly askewed from the original. And I suppose that isn't a bad thing on its own; the soundtrack is amazing. But... the tone of the soundtrack doesn't quite fit the same atmosphere, and certainly doesn't fit _who_ some of the characters are. I feel like the developers of the Remake misinterpreted the tone. That isn't necessarily a terrible thing, but... it does ruin some of the emotion that the original held. Primarily, I think of Astraea. The Remake did not do her tone and character justice, I think. It just... utterly lost the heartwrenching guilt in murdering her.
@@nautilus2612 And what of the factor that I never actually got the chance to play Demon's Souls myself? Is the Remake still not worth it in your eyes?
@@khajiitimanus7432 the remake is fine. the soundtrack loses some of the emotional impact the original had, but it's an enjoyable experience all around. there's always the option of returning to the original, if you truly feel this way.
@@loach- That is mildly reassuring. Still mildly depressing, but fairly reassuring. I'll look into trying it out at some point, though I'm not placing my hopes too high.
I kinda hope Fromsoft do more tracks like this in future games, would be nice to have more upbeat tracks rather than having them be sad and depressing all the time.
Nope. They sing the Nameless Song from DkS1. Though they sound similar, I KNOW the Nameless Song when I hear it. The vocal patterns are something I have grown attached to.
TheShameCar Actually, no, the Nameless song sounds similar to this, but is not the same. Az is right, the vocals are almost identical to the milfanitos.
TheShameCar I disagree. The notes are uncannily similar to the Milfanito's song, way more than to the Nameless Song. Besides, even the name Return to Slumber seems like a reference to the Milfanitos themselves.
I like the new version but the original is much better than the new version. The high notes here are just beautiful. The original is just so much more enchanting.
Demon souls is actually a sad game.It is about the king's allant kingdom, and the king allant stand behind it himself. And his poor son. The end of the game is saddest, beacuse you find the real king allant that looks like mutated monster.Actual story of this game is pretty sad because of this fact that once beautiful kingdom became only shadow of the past with the mutated monster and a demon on the throne.
The depressing vibe is real I'm playing the ps3 version and sometimes i just feel sad it feels like im there.. and i feel guilty for killing the bosses which were once human such a masterpiece
You know what's more sad? That in the lore it happened just in few days. And years then passed until someone with the power and will brings the old one back to slumber.
Yeah I think Demon's Souls has the best ost too, even after playing the remake which has it's own good versions of the originals masterpieces. Not only that, it was also the best game in the franchise, Bloodborne is good but og fans know it doesn't hold a candle to Demon's Souls.
@Swing Holic oh stfu you snowflake sure they’re not as good as the original songs but they’re not that bad you act like they added auto tune and some cringey k pop group on vocals
This game got me back into gaming. I mean, it's such an incredible experience. You can't watch videos of Demon's Souls to from an opinion about it... you need to play it to truly know how awesome it is.
This was the last souls game I played, I binged the entirety of them in 2 months and finished by the original, the start of it all. This theme just made me tear up
I'm a game master for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop rpg system and I've noticed that the Old One shares a lot of similarities with Azathoth, the HP Lovecraft god. A large mass at the center of the universe who is omnipotent, but lies in a semi-conscious, unconscious state, and is generally unaware that he created the planets, animals, humans, and all supernatural creatures. Reality is a dream that Azathoth is having, and when it wakes up, everything will disappear. Because of that, powerful entities have to sing it to slumber eternally so we can continue to exist. It's said that Azathoth created the entire universe, and will ultimately destroy it. The Old One is very similar to Azathoth, but it appears to have at least some form of consciousness that compels others to bring it souls. Eventually, all souls will be back to the Old One, and when that happens, the universe will completely empty, except for it, until one day, it will release them all in big bang like fashion, creating a new universe.
The remake was the our goodbye and the last that we will play demon souls the old one is back to slumber and the World is minded. thanks Hidetaka Miyazaki
This is really weird. I have not known this song up until today or even known it was the song for the good ending. All the while, I did play the good ending at the very least twice and the song playing at the end was always "Those who crave Souls" and not this one...
I know this is an old post, but I'm pretty sure the end song has to do with world tendency, and not the ending you choose. I don't recall exactly, but I'm sure I've encountered this scenario on my first playthrough, when I knew nothing about world tendency and had most worlds in pure black thanks to dying as a human over and over again.
Josiah York Thing is... I first played it offline and learned the game, basically. I didn't do much, but it was enough to learn it. After more than half a year after that, I could just go through it and clear it without any trouble (I heard everyone complaining about Maneater later and while I can understand someone falling off the ledge, I never died on that fight, lel, without abusing the glitch with the bow of which I didn't even know at the time since I didn't look anything up or had anyone to talk about it at the time). I hated managing tendencies though. I could never get it pure white or black. When I went online, it was empty though since Dark Souls was barely released. However, whenever I played, I had lighter tendencies - both world and character tendencies. I never got that. Might look it up though. But this theme is much more awesome than the other anyway. :3
One very clear example why the Demons Souls OST is superior to both that of Dark Souls and Dark Souls II. Demons Souls had a very distinctive, memorable theme: a twisted gothic style that even its relatively happier pieces echo. Dark Souls and Dark Souls II on the other hand, largely went for the generic "epic boss battle time" for seemingly their entire OSTs, which is a shame.
Cough cough Pinwheel, Sif, Priscilla, Gwyn, Artorias, Moonlight Butterfly, Dark Sun Gwyndolin, Aava, Lud and Zalen, Aldia, Vendrick, and every single other boss that doesn't have an epic theme wish to have a word with you.
This song makes me think of Fall/Winter weather, slightly gloomy, walking home in a sweater, with my hood on with my head slightly tilted forward and my hands in my sweater pockets, just trying to stay warm and finally getting home to change into some sweats and a crew-neck, making myself some hot chocolate, lighting my Woodland scented candles and chillin' in my living room with the heater on.
***** Haha.. Thanks man, just my little fantasy I've had since I first heard this song. I got to live up half of it today but i'll be able to live it up by next month when the weather is much more gloomy and cold.
@Inversedreverb That's one of the reasons why this game was so amazing. It didn't need complex characters. It didn't need huge plot twists. It didn't need a deep main character. The hardships and trials were enough to emerse you, and make you feel like never before. Truly a beautiful game.
theninjamandude So you don’t consider « god is in fact Satan » a huge plot twist, or « I’m a demon but you’ll tear up in guilt once you’ve killed me » as a complex character ?
Today I finished sekiro, the last installments of the soulsborne games, I played all of them, I almost grew up with this, at first it was all about the pride and achievement (COD FUCKING SUCKS PLAY THIS GAME IS HARD AF) but then... Then the misery and solitude hit me like a train, like an abyss staring at you, and changing you forever, in better or worst? That's up to us to decide, one thing is sure, without those games, without this experience lasted most of my teenage years, I wouldn't be who I am today, I wouldn't drop tears of... Don't know what, listening to this. Thank you darksouls (cit dunkey)
@@ikmalkamal5830the point of the remake is to remake the game, you might not like how they remade it but that doesn’t mean it’s disgustingly inferior, for the most part it’s either the same or better in things like graphics of quality of life
@@sobky6378demon souls created the souls aesthetic, the remake just serviced graphics gooners. The remake could have just as easily included a toggle between the versions
this is literally the most outstanding track in the souls franchise. It sounds so different from the entire DeS-DSIII score, I'm not a music major so I can't really explain it but
Yeah, this and song of the milfanito which essentially has an identical theme are vastly different due to the different stylings of boss fight OST and a lullaby. Definitely close to my fondness of the Majula theme.
This ost has woodwinds and a rythm so much different from the other soulsborne songs the way the piano is played. It also has either a string technique not used in other songs or played at an octave that ive never heard in other songs in the series. It sounds so american/japanese theatre-esque
I dunno... I feel like it actually did wonders for this track and a couple of others. In particular, I'd say that 'The Beginning', 'Tales of Old' and 'Flamelurker' also really benefitted from being made more epic. Compared to the remake version, this track fits the atmosphere of the game, but feels a bit too flat if that makes sense - it doesn't really DO anything. With the remake, it keeps the somber yet hopeful feeling of the original, yet builds up in a crescendo of orchestra and choir working with one another, reflecting the building of hope in-game from a hopeless beginning to a positive ending: it has progression, whereas this version doesn't really go anywhere. Overall it doesn't really matter. Both tracks are masterful and convey the same message. I just feel like the remake was a bit more interesting personally.
The second most depressing track in the series, along with Epilogue. Both songs perfectly represent the death of the series, and I must say, The Ringed City was the perfect end for the souls series, I almost don’t want Elden Ring because of that, and I especially would be infuriated if there was ever a DS4.
Elden ring, bloodborne, sekiro and demons souls don't take place in the dark souls universe but yeah i hope ds4 won't ever come out ds3 was the perfect end to the legendary trilogy
