Yeah, totally agree! RU-vid & the businesses advertising on YOUR content is benefiting but you’re NOT! 😡 I just demonetized and I mainly do spiritual stuff...SPIRIT ANIMALS, ZODIAC SIGNS!
At this point, I just think RU-vid is too scared to upset advertisers. Their filtering system is out of control and the worse part definitely is the fact that RU-vid leaves you out of the loop. I'm still confused as to why my videos about fitness gets knocked by demonetization. It is good that they now offer the opportunity to have someone "manually" review the block, but time is money. The more time a video is spent demonetized, especially in the first few days of release, the more people are going to be out of some serious $$$ they should have gotten.
They very likely don't understand much of what their 'filtering algorithm' is doing. It's probably a neural net run by a small team. They train it by showing it stuff they want to filter, stuff they don't want it to filter and tweak it until performance becomes 'acceptable'. They probably don't know exactly what the neural net is using for classifiers, since no one really understands how they work, just that they work.
If that were true, why would they STILL even NOW after all this KNOWINGLY STILL have adds on racist content? I mean calling women whores and bitches and dropping N word and pretty much breaking all the rules.
Must be nice to get such a quick response from RU-vid about demonitizing a video. I had one of my videos demonitized and I've been waiting a couple of months now for a response. It was flagged as "not suitable for most advertisers". It is a video of rain. RAIN. It is literally a 10 hour video, just like my others, of the sound of rain falling. Months... no response from RU-vid.
I got a notice saying they were only going to be reviewing videos that got more than a 1000 views in the first 7 days. Not going to happen for most of us.
that only applies (apparently) to new channels that have less than 10k view which makes no sense because it's even harder for smaller channels to get 1k in 7 days on one vid.
THANK YOU for saying something Casey! The fact that every video I put up has to be manually reviewed because of the algorithm is ridiculous. Given it takes about 2 days to get it remonetized, and I've already gotten most of my views. Casey these are great ideas to help us creators out, and I'm glad you're talking about this. You are fortunate. My small channel routinely gets under 1000 views per video, but thanks to a library of over 2000 videos across my channels things keep ticking over. When the algorithm demonitizes a video you need to have 1000+ views within 7 days before the video will get reviewed. That means none of the videos on my small niche channels ever get reviewed.

Yes!!! Two to three times a week we post a recipe video. Two to three times a week RU-vid Demonetises the videos and marks them inappropriate. Two to three times a week we appeal. RU-vid always agrees and turns the ads back on. Why? Why? Why? Just feels like they are giving us the shaft over innocuous videos about cookies and cake... They may call us "RU-vid Partners". but I don't feel like much of a partner. More like a serf looking for scraps.
This is why I became very discouraged being a creator. I finally found my niche in RU-vid right as they pulled monetization so now I’m producing several videos a week trying to get back into monetization. It’s was a little refreshing to not have to battle the algorithm anymore.
We got hit so hard. All we want to do is create content and grow but it has become so hard. We will take a step back, take a deep breath and go at it again. Our ad rev is gone. Thank you Casey for posting.

Thank you for being our voice Casey. This frustration has been going on for way too long. Content creators are constantly being put on the "please hold, your business is important to us", but we are never out of the hold queue
Here's an idea.... how about lettings the creators (or viewers) decide directly which type of ads get shown on their content? I often see very crude, vulgar, or disgusting ads shown before videos and it's honestly not fair that advertisers don't go through a review process as strict as the actual creators! Whether I see offensive political ads, constant swearing, or fish and animals being gutted! (Just saw that one last week, wtf) It displays very clearly to me that RU-vid do not care about protecting the viewers. Instead, they care about protecting the advertisers. The viewers can't decide which ads are shown to them, and they can't even skip most of them! (No wonder AdBlock has taken off!)

Wow Casey, This video gave me chills. As a creator myself, the last few months have left me feeling betrayed, undervalued, lacking faith. Many of my videos were demonetized for absolutely no reason at all. I sent a complaint to youtube and they did re-monetize about half of my videos. Thankfully I still have my full time job.... :/ Thank you so much for presenting some alternatives. This is the exact video the youtube creator community needs. Casey is basically our leader. Our pioneer. If creators as big as him start to push back we could see this hypocrisy die down. I also love the ending here. Yes, youtube DID remonetize some of my videos, but that was after I appealed. They agreed with me that THEY were wrong. But does that mean that I get any of that money back? No! Us creators seem to be completely at the mercy of this algorithm. I think creators should unite. Maybe construct some sort of union. I mean, I am literally afraid to make certain videos now because I know they won't be monetized. I started creating so I could be free to make whatever I want.
After Skool maybe the community should support/ unsupport RU-vid and their commercials. After all who wants commercials interrupting content anyways. I say if you want monetization set up a go fund me/ patreon or some other account that rewards you through your own popularity instead of having youtube dictating terms to you. Owning you, telling you what you can or can't do. I hate commercials. Let's get rid of them
I completely agree. Creators and viewers don't want ads. Sadly, most creators resort to selling t-shirts, mugs and pushing their patreons to support themselves. I know creators with a millions subs, who are still living with their parents. It's definitely not as glamorous as some creators make it seem.

Wow, Believe me or not, I was thinking about that for quite sometime. NETFLIX can have it's own NetFlixTube that's connected to your account. It is growing globally now in a record setting pace and people really paying for it. It's better for us to write to the CEO and make it their 2nd but connected to the original Netflix platform and make the UI simpler & easier to use. We are ALL for it... Let's go!!!
Netflix doesn't want to damage it's reputation by allowing trash videos from all "creators" and destroying all shows. The quality would drop and shock jocks would damage their image like it did RU-vid.
I am getting plagued as of late on my car detailing channel! I don't curse or anything in it, just give reviews about car detailing products. I would say 50% of my videos are nailed as soon as they go live. The only solution I have found is to not loose ad revenue and make the video private again and request a review. It ALWAYS gets cleared and I make it public again but it is such a darn pain in my ass! It usually takes me a day or two where I could be getting views/$$$ that I am loosing out on. I can see why the huge channels are suffering. RU-vid definitely needs competition, BIG TIME!
there are people out there who made video's where they just say "blah blah blah" for 5 minutes and other random things and the video's get demonetized.

The YT executives think about, go to lunch with, hunt, chase, and bend over for those who write the fat checks and that is Advertisers! The creators are needed but since they are always there, and they aren't paying big checks, the YT company doesn't worry about them.

A Tip to RU-vidrs whose videos get flagged with "limited or no ads" and have to be manually reviewed. What I do is schedule my videos in a couple days in advance so that if they do get flagged, I can push for review and then it can be approved before the vid goes live. I learned this after weeks of it happening. The videos would miss the initial view velocity which is where most of the views come in (within the first couple days of being posted.) Anyways wanted to share this because it has been working for and other youtuber friends I've talked to say it has been working too. Doing daily Vlogs might be more challenging but if you can upload and let the vid be scheduled for a day later it works pretty well.
Upload as private and schedule it out a couple days. You can redo the time later just set it so you'll know if it gets flagged and can then request for review. I do daily videos and this works every time I do it.

I think a powerful solution is to allow us to sell our own ad space to companies we actually resonate with. I think of my niche and how much better targeting it would be for both the creator and the companies as well. We know our audiences and can point them to things either we personally use or resonate with. Post net neutrality, RU-vid content creators will be considered competitors to companies worth billions of dollars. ISPs will have no reason to deliver independent RU-vid content.. The RU-vid community is fucked and RU-vid is already catering to ISPs.

Could not agree with you more sir. I am a newbie on RU-vid (6 months) but I have seen all of these issues in this short time. I agree that investment needs to be made into the content creators outside of giving us access to the RU-vid space. Keep rocking brother!
Twitch right now could come up remotely similar to RU-vid like video saving and others I think they have an opportunity to take over unless RU-vid at least tells people what there plan is or something.
Companies have been claiming my vids even though they're 100 percent covered by fair use. I dispute the claims and companies keep their claim and I don't get to monetize my own vids. I'm a super small youtuber and I don't have to rely on this to survive but it's still bullshit that RU-vid won't bother to help me in any way no matter how my videos are protected legally. I've emailed for support and they are so vague in the answers leading to their choice to not get involved and help in any way. It really hurts the small youtubers a lot in trying to grow in any way shape or form

I fucking hate that! I used A FREE beat and there was someone that STOLE that beat changed it up a "bit" and signed it with a label so that everyone that uses his STOLEN beat will get a copy right claim. Its such fucking bull shit! I even messaged the person myself and no response.
I can assure you, RU-vid gives ZERO fucks about smaller channels simply because they make pennies off of us. Now if they made that Neistat dough, maybe they'd care. But judging by how they're treating even their largest cash cows, I wouldn't hold my breath.
24 Frames Of Nick you need to go get a lawyer and have them look into your case, especially in light of the recent court ruling on RU-vid and Fair Use in the Ethan and Hila Klein (aka H3H3) legal case - just Google "H3H3 lawsuit" and you will have hours of reading. You will continue to get your videos flagged since the other company knows you are not fighting back - once you show you are not laying down for them anymore, then things will change for you.

When I was a truck driver, the company would sometimes screw up my paycheck. When I called them about it, they'd add the difference to my next paycheck. RU-vid, however, takes away your money and when you say, "I believe it's suitable for all advertisers," they still don't pay you back the money you lost. I have two videos that are demonetized. They are both just videos of railroad crossings. I apealed both of them. It's been nearly 24 hours and they're still demonetized. And I really need that money because I'm currently unemployed and looking for a job.
Quite literally happens almost every time I upload a new video. End up needing to appeal and losing the bulk of income from the first surge of views, IF my video gets approved after appeal. Great analysis, Casey. Keep it up.
This is a huge issue for people like myself and other creators alike who’s livelihood is this platform! People need to understanding this issue isn’t fixed soon many of us creators won’t be able to exist on this platform any longer :/
actually it does cost money , time is money and creating content takes time , hardware and also money to provide more original content by doing activities . so all in all it DOES cost to be a content creator . the real question here is does the cost outprice the revenu .

I believe I can speak for the whole community that we appreciate the fact that influential and very big youtubers like you create videos like this to basically give more attention on how broken the current youtube system / Bot is. Improvement is obligatory, it can't be the way it is now. A good system or better system than current 1, would be that once the Bot finds a video that may be "Not ad friendly" it doesn't demonetize it, but sends that video over for manual review to youtube team, and the decision should be made by youtube team whether the video is indeed Ad friendly or NOT. If you agree with me please thumb this comment up and spread this on other big youtuber channels / videos so maybe it will eventually get attention and youtube maybe, just maybe will eventually listen.
This would be the best option but its simply impossible to achieve. More than 500 hours of video are uploaded EVERY MINUTE. So even if 1% of them aren't add friendly, that means 5 hours of video, or around 40-60 videos that a team has to watch within a minute to judge if its add friendly or not. That would simply require too big of a team, and too much money to spend for RU-vid

Exactly...no advertisers means no YT. Without those advertisers there wouldnt be any channel for all these youtubers to upload their videos. That is of course unless Google wants to own a mammoth company that has all the freedom of speech you want but brings no revenue.

I just started to post 6 months ago, and I have 75k subscribers and almost 5 million views on my channel. Unfortunately, because I live in Romania, I get paid approximately 100$ for 1M views monthly. I don't know if it's fair or not, because I actually have a job, but I sure do want to make my living out of doing something I love doing. I also started creating vloggs, because they are a lot of fun, on another channel (LaPuiu, with my wife), and still I'm saying.. we spend a lot of time and money on these vloggs, and we love doing it, but we would really love getting something in return. No, RU-vid can die. It's this online streaming creator market that needs to survive. Someone just needs to create a website that's the same as RU-vid, just without the controversy.
Clearly RU-vid is trying to go a different direction, that is why youtubers are being pushed out, hence youtube creating RU-vid Tv and Red. Streaming is evidently the future of Entertainment, and i think RU-vid have realized this. Remember this site went from being video sharing site to a content creation site and now to a streaming site.
The way Netflix are growing at the moment, it would only take them to roll out a service for professional channels which could draw a lot of the community over OR just upload on both platforms, RU-vid could see massive losses overnight!!
Facebook has the leverage to give creators what they want. They can win on sheer volume alone. Satisfy the big guys and the little guys. RU-vid is getting ahead of itself.
None of this YT BS drives people to Facebook, because FB has no viable revenue sharing program for small and medium sized creators. For the most part Facebook monetizes *everything* (including stolen content from other platforms), and they keep all the ad revenue themselves ($9B just last quarter). Also if you have a ton of followers FB will randomly limit distribution of new content, so if you want your content to reach all of your *own* followers, you have to pay FB. The only way to leverage FB's larger potential audience to make money is to post sponsored content, or promote your own external products/services.
This situation now in 2019, is only worse in my opinion. Because it's become savagely political and there's been too many deplatforming because of different political opinion or subjects that is not politically correct. Such as Firearms related channels. Many of my friends have had their channels deleted completely because they talked about guns. And those not deplatformed have been demonetized. Such as my channel, which was small, but I used to get about 600 dollars a month. Now, nothing.
There are many alternatives to RU-vid that have already "come by." The fact that u don't know this emphasizes the problem: people get stuck to the same brands and don't bother to search for the little guy.
Famous RU-vidrs really need to do the ad boycott again. By disabling ads RU-vid does not make money and they would probably take action and have a solution.
They basically screwed everyone but the "Paul Logans of RU-vid" and did so without vaseline. He took no hit for this shitshow he started, he actually gain followers which in turn put cash in his pockets . My hope in near future there is a viable alternative. Some of the people who are RU-vid Stars today couldn't have done it under this model.
