A brief history of the Sonora Elite Phonograph with its famous Bulge sided Ornate Cabinet, and other unique Features. Sonora was founded in the early 19teens and offered this unique style of Cabinetry on its top of the line models such as the Supreme, Invincible, Grand, Elite, and Baby Grand. Each machine came with an Official Sonora Guarantee Certificate, which protected the Phonograph against any material defects for 1 year. Each certificate contained the facsimile signature of George Brightman, the President of Sonora, and on the reverse side was proudly listed all of the patents and their origins under which Sonora produced its phonographs. The Cabinets also had the Sonora Patented Record Storage just below the horn, as well as a handy pull out Storage draw where you could keep spare parts, and catalogs and other record or phonograph related items. The Sonora ornate all wood Tone arm was also a unique and special option, which the Company touted as offering a Complete wood "sound page" assuring excellence in tone and overall sound quality. Sonora's Bulge sided Cabinets were made and patented by The Herzog Art Cabinet Co. of Saginaw Michigan, a Company which was started by John Herzog back around the turn of the last century and specialized in the mfg. of artistic furniture, Cabinets, and also made early Cylinder storage cabinets for the Then fledgling Phonograph Industry. It's most remembered design were these famous bulge sided cabinets which were offered by Sonora. Sonora later move its production facilities to Saginaw in 1917, and two years later purchased the entire facilities owned and operated by John Herzog. Herzog was so proud and enamored to his bulge sided cabinet design, that he modeled the porch on his Home in Saginaw after it, and also had his Gardeners trim some of the huge hedges on his estate in that shape as well. The Sonora Co. continued its success into the 1920's but when with the great depression of 1929, and record and phonograph sales soon falling to but a small fraction of pre depression numbers, the Company went bankrupt in 1930.

I have a portable Sonora phonograph that was bought at auction for $10.00. The auctioneer said that it wouldn't work. We brought it home and it worked! I love this old thing.

In addition, this is the original version by Al Jolson from 1918. The song would later covered by so many people over the years. Judy Garland also did a version of “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby” from her double album “Live at Carnegie Hall”, and so did Aretha Franklin who also did her version as well, and it was Aretha’s debut hit in 1962.

This one even still has the interchangeable reproducers, one for lateral and the other for vertical, making this machine even more desirable and valuable!

My tabletop Barcarolle does that too, and it was the first phonograph to have its own compatibility to play standard records, and play both Pathe and Edison Diamond Disc records.

I was at a Red Hook Yard Sale today, and I saw a Sonora phonograph which is the tabletop version and it’s in ratty condition, and the top of the unit had the veneer coming off and the lid and the base has full of dust and cobwebs and the grill was broken off. It’s $30 and I hope it would be a good project of fixing the phonograph and I love to have it working once I get it, and it would be part of the history. The Sonora tabletop looks really nice, and I hope that one day, I will get it. The model is the Melodie.

Thank you for your comment and inquiry. See my detailed information just below the screen. The Sonora Co. dates to the early 19teens so, your Sonora would have to date to that time period or later and not 1905. If I understand what you are describing, you let the motor run to the very end, and when you attempted to crank it did not wind up, and there no tension in the spring. It sounds like when you let it wind down, the spring detached itself from the inside of the spring barrel.Continue above.

Sonora began by making these special Bombay bulge type cabinet machines along with expensive "Art Type" Models, before the expanded their output to include medium range and smaller inexpensive type machines like yours. They all had different names (the models). I don't know what yours is called. Does yours have draw for storage ? Sometime if you remove the draw and turn it over, the name of the model is on the other side.

Beautiful Sonora. I have one similar, 1905. I played a record and let it run to the end and now when I use the crank to wind it up, nothing happens. What did I do and how can I fix it please. I bought this about 30 yrs ago at an auction for $65. Nobody wanted it so I've been very thankful all these years it's mine. Thanks for sharing yours.

I just inherited one that looks identical to yours minus the wood arm. Mine isn't in as good of shape cosmetically and I haven't tried to play anything on it yet

Beautiful machine and excellent commentary as well. The record "sings" for it self, if you pardon the dreadful pun... Did Sonora ever produce a machine to reproduce electrically recorded records?

You will need to have someone familiar with phonograph motors to repair that for you. Where are you located ? I may be able to recommend someone to contact, from one of the Phonograph Societies in the U.S. If not there are several good phonograph repair companies you can contact and send the motor to repair.

I just got this one today, and it’s a Sonora Melodie tabletop phonograph from about 1920 or 1921. It’s in ratty shape and it’s very dirty. I hope it needs cleaning.
