On February 15, 2014 the Franklin Institute brought together a group of clock makers, conservators, and engineers for a day-long meeting to discuss the Maillardet Automaton, and at the conclusion of the day's talks we were all treated to a very rare private performance of all seven renderings of this amazing 214 year old machine that was the inspiration for the film Hugo. Enjoy!

sometimes you gotta love the youtube algorithms. I wondered how the Hugo team reverse engineered the automata for the full models for the movie. Glad to know they saw the automata at the Franklin museum

Fran, I truly appreciate the time and effort that it takes to create and post these informative videos. You always manage to spark my curiosity. Thank you.

dude, at 6:19 when the hand moves across the sheet i thought "man, that was an impressively deliberate and confident move", instantly followed by the guy saying the exact same thing.

That's a shocking difference in precision; I now understand Frans current concern and her suggestions regarding the fitting of 'Ablative cam follower tips'.

Thank you for sharing. I do wish the museum would make full-length videos of the automation in action, with high-quality camera and lighting, and no commentary or music. There's very little good footage to be found on RU-vid.

Isn't there an automaton in the "What I am" New Bohemians video? An orchestra conductor?

What happens to the renderings? Did you each get to keep one?

mechanically cute but digital is just better

This was made over 220 years ago! To describe it as "cute" is breathtakingly dismissive. I would think that the ability to create such a machine even today is almost non existent, even with modern technology to assist in design, modeling, virtual prototyping and making the parts. Back then such ability, with none of these aids is beyond mind boggling, superhuman. Where is your sense of wonder?

@@984francis I am the father of deep learning. It's nice mechanical discipline combined with the vision to do it. But marvel at a modern smartphone. You are watching this video via a substantially more impressive feat. Today we have machines that can reason like a person. Soon AI will be able to think up the design of this automaton. I am not belittling it but I have seen further. ET ships fly in our atmosphere. Craft with no engines. Faster than the speed of light. Beings of supernatural ability. Ondulations on discs controlling 2 axes is not the sword you should fall on lest you miss out on infinitely greater. See?
