I spent almost a year cycling in Canada on this trip and took a detour onto the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Ocean. Dempster Highway is the only road in Canada that takes you past the Arctic Circle. It is a 900 km unpaved road in Yukon and Northwest Territories, crossing the tree line onto the rolling moonscape north of the tundra and ending up at the Arctic Ocean.
The Dempster Highway passes through one of the world's last wildest places. As I cycle the Dempster, I feel as if humanity has disappeared from the face of the earth. The biggest town for the first five hundred kilometers, Eagle Plains, has a population of only nine. For several hundred kilometers, the gravel road is the only sign of human intervention in the land mainly inhabited by bears, caribous, foxes, and other wild animals.
HOW I FILMED THIS SHOT?
I took the drone as high as it could go-500 meters from the take-off position. Then I hit the record button and brought it down. It took about three minues for it to complete the descent. When the drone was about two meters above the ground, I entered the frame with my bicycle to complete the shot. I was lucky that I got the desired image in the first try. In the post, I sped up the video by 1000%. Hence you get the timelapse-like effect and see the clouds moving across the land.
