Join Sara and I as we take our puppy, Denali, on his very first overnight backpacking & camping trip. GPS Data at www.Sintax77.com
For this adventure, we were joined by a brand new hiking partner - our 7 month old puppy dog, Denali...
For an easier read, check out the full trip report and blog post here: wp.me/p2ReUQ-fx
While Denali is no stranger to walking and hiking (we've tried to make that a regular part of his life since we adopted him at 2 months old), this will be his very first foray into an overnight backpacking trip. Or to put it in terms from his perspective; his first time sleeping out in the woods, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, nary a shred of carpet or plush dog bed to be seen.
Our chosen destination was a 14 mile loop comprised of several trails in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. I was made aware of this trip via the super-helpful website called "Hiking Upward". For those of you hikers along the mid-Atlantic who haven't heard of this site before, I highly suggest checking it out some time. Since this was a bit of a last minute trip, coupled with the fact that it was our pup's first time backpacking, I wanted everything to go nice and smoothly, and their detailed trip reports were a welcomed asset.
The first half of this circuit was of the higher elevation variety, consisting primarily of a ridge walk along a the Neighbor Mountain Trail, as well as a section of the Appalachian Trail. Day two would be mostly along the Jeremy's Run Trail. As the name would suggest, the Jeremy's run trail closely follows the contours of Jeremy's Run, a stream that we would traverse 14 times before returning to the metallic confines of our car. Below is an overview of our route, along with trail head parking location and other points of interest. For those of you interested, I recorded full GPS track data during this backpacking trip. along with campsites and other notable POI's which can be downloaded on my Trip Data page.
Trailhead and Parking: Jeremy's Run Trailhead N38° 44.456' W78° 18.716' (by Elkwallow Picnic Gound and the Wayside Store)
Trails Used Day 1 (in order)
Starting from the Jeremy's Run Trailhead,
Take the Appalachian Trail (south)
Turn right (west) on Neighbor Mountain Trail
At intersection, turn right (east) on Jeremy's Run Trail
Set-up camp along Jeremy's Run at N38° 42.629' W78° 21.913'
Day 1 Total Mileage: 9 miles (This is the mileage to the actual campsite. My solo mileage for the day, including scouting and backtracking, totaled 13.5 miles)
Day 1 Total Elevation Gain: 1,785'
Trails Used Day 2 (in order)
Continue on Jeremy's Run Trail
At intersection, continue north on Appalachian Trail
back to the Jeremy's Run Parking Trailhead and parking area.
Day 2 Total Mileage: 16 miles (This is the mileage to the actual campsite. My solo mileage for the day, including scouting and backtracking, totaled 13.5 miles)
Day 2 Total Elevation Gain: 1,391'
Total Mileage for Trip: 15 miles
Total Elevation Gain for Trip: 3,176'

Best Hiking Dog Parents Ever. Thank you so much for showing how it's supposed to be done. A special video on this should go viral. Really appreciate how you conditioned him, consideration for his growing bones, kept him hydrated, pre- hike training, keeping him under control with consideration of other hikers, giving him his own bed, consideration for his exposure to spiders and snakes. I have seen food for sport dogs ( possibly organic?) and of course there is post hike doggie massage. That is one lucky boy with 5 star parents! You guys are AWESOME!

Got a simple tick tip for you. *Permethrin* and you shouldn't have a problem with them anymore. Works like a charm. It can stay in your clothes for up to 45 days, depending on the number of washes. So for me, I apply in twice during my camping season and I'm good to go throughout.

Pitbulls are excellent hiking companions. My bully always comes to me if I trip, or can't get across something. He always pulls away branches or lets me hold his leash and pulls me over a slope. He finds the best path to follow. I never thought an untrained dog would do that and understand so much.

My pittie loved being in the hammock. He'd curl up and stay in there as long as he could. I'd put him in at dark while I got a fire going and make supper. He'd stay in there until I went to bed. I'd have to get him out so I could get in. He hated that! A ground cover under the hammock was a must to help keep the paws clean. Love the videos with all you guys in them!

Nice! Amazing how dogs adjust so easily to living their lives with us. Have been taking my pup on trips for a long time. She knows Dolly Sods wilderness better than most people. Last year, there was a short trail relocation on Blackbird knob trail. She kept stopping and looking towards the old trail and then at me. She knew that we were on the "wrong" trail and let me know about it. Glad you two have a pup for your trips. Maztrain (on the hammockforums) did make a dog hammock and underquilt for their dog Momo. She loves it!.

Great video, loved watching Denali have fun! You are absolutely right about adding in the topical tick prevention on top of the flea/tick pill (which I assume is NexGard or Bravecto). I recommend K9 Advantix since it repels and kills ticks since it has permethrin (not all topicals repel ticks). For best protection, you probably want to apply it 1 week before camping so it has time to cover his entire body. I also love the "insurance policy" that the pill provides because the ticks that do end up biting will die before they have a chance to transmit their gross diseases. Tick diseases are no joke for dogs. I sure hope Denali's vet likes the channel and hiking as much as this vet does! haha.

Great video. First time I took my dog Scout backpacking we ran into the same issue at night and she ended up in my Blackbird XLC which wasn't all that comfortable since she is at 50 pounds. She did not want to sleep on the ground alone. Now I ground dwell when backpacking with her which isn't fun for my back but makes her happy.

Beautiful dog. I take mine out hiking camping and mountain biking too. She is a great camping dog and gets excited when we start pulling out the gear. I actually taught my dog to heel on the right. So when we pass people on the trail I am between them and my dog, I felt this was not only safer when biking, but would make no- dog-loving people feel even better as I am between them and they dont have to pass close to the dog.

Awesome dog, seems really calm. We do a lot of hiking down here in SW VA and I've really liked Chacos for day hikes, treks with a lot of river crossing, and don't need to bring a second pair sandals for camp. Not bad for $30ish from STP. It takes a few to adjust it for good fit, but well worth it.

Cool video! My pup isn't quite ready yet but can't wait. I've seen some people make a small hammock that hangs under your....I mean Sarah's hammock for the pouch. I have been making my own bug spray and it works great. The main tick killer is Cedarwood essential oil along with others. I'd be happy to share the recipe if you re interested. Safe forth pup too. Effective for the gnats also.

super interesting vid! And cute pup! :) Agh, ticks! They always get us... grrr! Something I found that works wonders is Rose Geranium and Lemon Eucalyptus essential oils. I put a drop around the neck, usually on a bandana/hankerchief and tail area and it really deters them from sticking to the dogs/or me. :) (be careful which other essential oils you use as some need to be diluted before using on dogs.)
