I grew up in Hungary in the early 90s. Hardly anyone had a console then. Most people played their C64s and the big thing was to buy a disk system. I was that kid who had a family member (my Dad) in Australia. So I was sent a Mega Drive and some games. Which was almost foreign to the kids in my school. And my grandparents would buy me out of date British and American gaming magazines, to practice and learn English. I had no patience on loading C64 games. I was surprised to never hear of the Dendy. we drove Ladas and Moskvich cars, and our TV had that wolf and bunny cartoon. So lack of Russian bootleg console was strange. We had TV shows dedicated to people playing games. And Nintendo and Sega were both represented OK, but they were considered more like Neo Geo was in the west. A super expensive awesome console that was out of reach for the average kid who didn’t have parents sending them stuff from Australia.

Great video, comrade. I'm from Brazil but I live in St. Petersburg now. I've loved video games my whole life, and I was really surprised when some years ago my Russian friends told me all about Dendy. It was funny that they didn't know the name Nintendo, all they knew was Dendy. I've wanted to buy a Dendy since then, and I think your video will finally push me into actually buying one. So this grayish Famicom is Dendy. Now it makes sense. I mean as I live in Finland and I've visited occasional to the towns near our eastern border (which is right next to Russian) and raided some of second hand stores & flee markets, sometimes this console happens to be appear here and there, sold as NES. Usually I've pass the deal but after I saw this video, I might not do that again.

Doki! Yuuenchi, Mickey Mouse 3 (хотя и не было игр с сохранениями). А еще, хоть это очевидно, у нас всегда были турбо кнопки...

Bootleg stuff from around the world always interests me. I live in Costa Rica (Latin America) where famiclones were also extremely popular and for many the only option due to cost for a while, so I have tons of nostalgia for this kind of stuff. Great video!
@Arbteron
@Arbteron 3 года назад
I found your channel by watching John's NES Bootlegs video, and have to say, you really deserve more subscribers. I just finished watching all 4 of your videos, and they're all very informative and interesting. I've grown a bit tired of the whole western retro game culture over the past few years, just because to me it seems like everyone's just repeating the same things over and over. Shigeru Miyamoto based Zelda on his memories of exploring the forest when he was a kid, Michael Jackson worked on the soundtrack for Sonic 3, LJN makes shitty licensed NES games, yada yada you know the drill. I thought I pretty much knew all there was to know about retro games, because I just heard the same things over and over from western youtubers, but then I found out that things were actually much, MUCH different over here in Europe, mainly in the Eastern Bloc, which is where I'm from (specifically Czechia). I actually noticed a lot of similarities between what you said gaming was like in Russia and what I've read about it being like in Czechia. Cheap famiclones, pirated PC games, chipped PS1s and all that stuff applies to many eastern european countries as well. We just didn't have it as extreme as you guys, because you could still get original hardware and software if you wanted to, it'd just cost you a pretty penny. We even had things like the the Mega CD and Mega 32X, just in really limited numbers. NFKRZ (and a bunch of other youtubers) actually made a few great videos about videogames in Russia as well, so people definitely can learn about it if they want to, but the same can't be said for Czechia (or rather Czechoslovakia at the time). You can't even imagine how hard it is to find any new info on the distribution of games/movies in the 80s and 90s over here, it's just not properly documented at all. (and of course, I don't have any personal experience from that time at all, since I'm only 16 years old, lol) But that actually does somehow add to the fun of learning about it, because the info is so rare, you're happy when you learn something new. Anyways, great video, I look forward to seeing more.

In Russia, instead of Mario, Sonic has always been more popular, instead of the Zelda series, the Gothic series on the PC, Zelda seemed simple, until the moment when one girl wrote a book with the plot of Zelda posing as her own, then people began to be interested in the Zelda series.

I'm an American who started gaming in 1986 with the Nes and Master System (divorced parents). I have never seen a Dendy before, but I really love the color scheme. It looks incredibly cool in black and white. Thank you for sharing this with us. Addendum - You, my friend, are a good guy. The honesty you show when you talk about sellers on Ebay is both genuine and awesome. The world needs more people like you. I also think you're being a little hard on yourself when talking about your personal sales online. It's perfectly reasonable to expect to make a little from a sale. You're not price gouging here, so no big deal. Subbed!

Very good video, very interesting. Similar to videogames history in Argentina, here came a taiwanese clone called Family Game at early 90s. Some popular games were of course Mario, Megaman, Castlevania, etc, and among others Captain Tsubasa Vol. II: Super Striker a sport-JRPG in JAPANESE and also all the games in 99999 in 1. Also were very common bootleg games that were any other game with the main character replaced by Mario lol, and some original bootleg games like a Street Fighter II version and Somari, Sonic version for Family Game but instead of Sonic it was Mario lmao.

We have a Micro-Genius famiclone that’s identical to the Dendy Classic model shown. Micro-Genius also made bootleg Famicom games that were sold in Canada, and Montreal was the center of that importation circle. We got Super Mario 3 before it came out officially in the West. Another popular title was Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, renamed Baby Mario. You could find them easily in flea markets and independent video stores.

Dendy is just a misspelling of Dandy. It means nothing in Russian. The producer was probably either an Oscar Wilde fan, or a fan of the Kinks song "Dandy", and forgot how to spell the word. There was a great Dungeons-&-Dragons-style videogame called Dandy (DnD, lol), but that probably had nothing to do with the name of this console.
