Dengue (break-bone fever) is a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people. It is more common in tropical and subtropical climates. Most people who get dengue won't have symptoms. But for those that do, the most common symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea and rash

One of the advantages of living in East Africa is the prevalent use of mosquito nets. All boarding school students must bring nets to their schools. I use a net every night in all seasons. It does help and I wish I knew about mosquito nets when I suffered from bad bites in Colombia. Anyway this presentation is very good. There is a lot of dengue where I am.

You should discuss the four strains of dengue and the consequence of getting sick a second time, with a different strain. That’s the real danger of dengue.

What happens the second time?
@Axiomatic75
@Axiomatic75 10 месяцев назад
@@EarthsGeomancer There's a chance that your immune system gets confused. It thinks it has got the right antibodies to deal with it but because it's a different strain these antibodies are actually ineffective. So people get really, really sick before their immune system finally realizes its mistake.
@patriciabosch9499

@@EarthsGeomancer if you get stung by the mosquito with the same strain, then it turns hemorrhagic...or severe dengue...Thera are four strains : den-1, den-2, den-3 , and den-4....the most dangerous one is 2 and that’s the one we are being hit with
@eldee1628
@eldee1628 8 месяцев назад
@@EarthsGeomancer As far as I'm aware, if it's the same strain, you are immune. If it's another of the four strains you could get internal bleeding (hemorrhagic fever), more likely if it's the third strain you pick up and as said here it can then be life threatening. I had dengue about five years ago - it was scary.

Dr. Mike, even the CDC says you can safely use permethrin ("Sawyers") to treat your clothing. That repels and kills mosquitoes and ticks. Doesn't go on your skin, doesn't melt plastics. A synthetic version of a natural chrysanthemum bug repellant. Makes a great alternative to deet!

I've had Dengue twice--once three weeks after arriving in Northern Thailand in 2013 and the second time 4 years later in Northern Laos. Among MANY other symptoms, I was hallucinating what I was hearing (I heard conversations in English, but no one spoke English at the rural hospital) and I saw an aura around the body of a man who died in the bed across from me. There's a reason it's referred to as break-bone fever. When the second bout hit I knew what it was, but not as difficult. Navigating stairs was exhausting and everything in nature seemed to be in black and white. It's a powerful experience.

It’s not endemic in Hawaii. But in 2016, We had an outbreak start spreading when a sick tourist brought it in and spread it at a campsite. You have to actively avoid getting bit and scour your property for breeding spots. Any stagnant water. Mosquitoes can breed in just a teaspoon of water. The flying range of this mosquito is 200 feet, so if there were confirmed cases in our area we really had to be careful. Eventually it was eliminated from Hawaii Island.

I got dengue fever when I was 13 years old (back in 2002) while I was living in Puerto Rico with my grandma. I remember looking up the statistics and at that time, it was incredibly rare in the U.S. only 1-2 cases/year. Every time I've looked it up since then, it's been more and more. I am lucky that I was a healthy teen with a strong immune system. Another girl at my high school, who had a lot of medical issues already, got dengue not long after me and died because of it.

I got Dengue in Thailand during the covid outbreak because with fewer travelers and Thailand started to fall into disrepair. It was pretty terrible and I spent about a week in the hospital. My platelets got really low and just when they couldn't go much lower, I started to recover. I pretty much just spent a week sleeping in the hospital. They say Papaya leaf juice helps increase platelets and is the local "treatment". The hospital refused helping me get some. I got the typical bumps and rash all over my skin right at the end also.

Please be warned that young people are especially vulnerable to dengue. Here in Indonesia several of my students have died. It's critical that if you get it, not to do any activity, even if you start feeling better, since it can rapidly take a turn for the worse. (One student felt well enough to play basketball, and he died shortly after.) The conventional wisdom is to drink lots of guava juice, which is high in vitamin C and appears to have a positive effect on white blood cell count.

I had bite wounds for a month or so and a low grade fever day or so after the bites. I am assuming I may have been exposed to dengue or some other mosquito virus, however my symptoms were mild ( I'm lucky for a 63 year old). Now I take precautions whenever I go.
