this is quite simply the greatest work of art ever put on film, emotional. violent. touching. beautifully filmed with an astoundingly beautiful soundtrack it is a work of absolute perfection,
@@billybarnell1996 Well not sure about that. There is Leonard Lowe from Awakenings, Max Cady from Cape Fear. Let's not forget MICHAEL VRONSKY in THE DEER HUNTER.
"Once upon a time in America" it's not just a simple movie, it is something higher, it's a truly life experience that can't be explained by words...in my humble opinion The absolute best movie of all time. Masters like Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone make me feel proud to be italian every single day of my life.
Make that "between 1973 (Mean Streets) and 1995 (Heat)". He delivered quality work before and after that period, but in these 22 years, who was at his prime.
Once Upon a Time in America = Greatest Film Ever. Not even kidding, I prefer this to the likes of The Godfather Films and Goodfellas. Such an overlooked masterpiece.
The best movie ever. There aren't other films which can describe what Once Upon a Time in America is. The feelings of regret, lost occasions and memories can't be represented better, also because the acting of Robert DeNiro is the definition of acting. He's the best actor ever. This motion picture is also better than another Sergio Leone masterpiece "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly", even though they're totally different things.
u both guys do know the fact that there are ppl are out there in this world who only think of him as an actor who can only play the gangsta role. Man, what brainless shitheads those ppl are. Full of hate, they cant accept the fact this guy is better than all the actors there have ever been and better than their fav ones. Pacino fanboys are out there who think Pacino is better than Robert, they must be kidding right? Guess what, DDL worshippers now think that DDL is the best actor ever nd he is better than Bobby. My god, give me a break ffs. What knuckleheads these ppl are. These guys need to watch all Robert movies and even then if they cant accept he is the best ever and they are not helping themselves at all, no brains detected then.
In my opinion this is the greatest movie of all time. Its by far my favorite movie ever!! Deniro was absolutely amazing in this film. Classic Story telling Classic gangster. I have watched this movie over 100 times and i could watch it 1000 more.
This is one of the greatest under-rated films of all time. The movie is an epic and keeps you watching from begining to end with a fantastic soundtrack that is so hauntiing. Years and years after seeing this film I still find myself whistling cockeye's song.
The Sound Track will haunt me til the day I close my eyes and never hear it again. I love to the point that I have driven my family crazy cuz I can’t stop whistling it. The stair scene where the little boy has to choose between the attention of the girl or his love of the taste of the sweet treat is diabolical and so wonderfully torturous.
Always liked that moment where Noodles is stirring his coffee: he knows everyone's watching him, getting ready to tell him the next bit of big news & he's aware of it, wondering where the next verbal shot from one of the guys is coming from next.
I haven't got enough words to convey how superb this film is. Every actor. Every scene. Every note of a magnificent score. The nuances of each relationship. The tragedy of an unrequited love. The deep sense of time and place and just the whole thing from start to finish... An utter privilege to watch (for the third time) and a film for all time. Does masterpiece do this heartbreakingly gorgeous film justice...? It's the best I can do. It wont be beaten in my lifetime. Quite sure about that. ❤️
It's amazing how the one of the greatest actor's talking about one of the greatest director. He's picking every single word looking for the best way to convey his point. De Niro exposes his deep understanding of directing a motion picure and what makes him the great as well as his acting skill.
I like te little things Sergio does in his movies. Like letting side characters stare intensely at what a main character is doing. (for example the guy that sells tickets at the station)
This is one of the most vivid memories of my childhood..went to see it back in Russia w my mother..she told me to go home after the 1st act bc of nudity so I didn't get to see the movie in its entirety till years later..though it affected me in the way that no other movie ever has....not just the sex, but characters, story soundtrack.... I learned about love, friendship, loyalty and betrayal. I think about it every time I'm in Dumbo...an epic and the only saga comparable to Heat.
I know it’s been like 6 years since you wrote this but just thought you’d like to know if you didn’t already that it’s now available on Amazon Prime. The 3hrs 49 min version
We should all enjoy Pacino and DeNiro...two living legends..all time greats...enjoy their work while you can. Guys like these two dont come around but once in a lifetime. Both are still at the top of their game and able to play characters 20 years younger than their real age...what acting is all about.
It is one of the best movies of all time. And the greatest crime movie of all time. i saw 251 minute edition. Each and every seen is incredibly moving. Sergio Leone was overlooked on each and every occasion. He deserved every directors award that is in existence, for this movie. Long live Sergio Leone's art, talent and directing skills.
In fact Sergio Leone and his westerns were looked down upon until after he died. Everyone recognizes his genius today, but back then he was sneered at. Sad.
This movie is the real deal. It seems like a bit of a history film mixed with a love story and drama. The score was incredible. Maybe the greatest film ever
Best movie that I have seen the music was beautiful and I watch it sometimes I cry my parents loved it they have passed but when I listen to the music 🎶 I feel my mum and dad are with me 😢🍀🍀
Would have been an even greater film had Leone been able to do the film the way he intended for it to be finished. Many people were furious when the film came out because of the way it was chopped up during editing...many great scenes were left on the editing room floor from what I have read. Yes,great, great film that should have been Leone perfection.
I tried to watch this movie countless times and I watched it for the first time last week I’m 42 and my whole life I thought the movie was something completely different than what it is.
my parents were relatively old and this amazing movie was one of those special occasions that brought them and me and my brother together on the same level for the duration of the film
Just finished watching it, what an incredible film, loved every 3 hours and 50min+ of it lol, just amazing, all i can say is thanks to Sergio for creating such a masterpiece.
every thing about this movie, direction, acting, soundtrack, script, storyline, characters etc, is brilliant. i have lost count of the number of times i have watched it, but it still grips me from start to finish. a masterpiece.
I love Robert DeNiro one of the greatest actors that ever lived and also Al Pacino have watched so many of their films ❤❤❤❤ Also the music from once Upon a time in America and Once Upon a Time in the West was so beautiful ❤❤❤
A movie that has grown on me since I first watched it, there is always something new to it everytime I see it, never fail to enjoy watching it. Like Shawshank, never got the credit it deserved when first released, but has turned into one of the great movies of all time. This is up alongside the Casablanca's and Brief Encounters, a movie I actually rate as better then The Godfather.
I hope that within my lifetime I am able to see the film the way that Sergio Leone intended. Even the "extended" version is extremely cut down. They had over 18 hours of film and the story was meant to be told through two films that were 6 hours long. Imagine how much of this masterpiece we are missing. You can find some of the scenes online but most of it never made it to the internet. I truly hope before I die I am able to see it.
I saw a lil documentary about this, that the way it ended, how he smiled, possibly indicates that all that happened after he left the Chinese theater and lived to an elderly age was all A DREAM.
That seriously messed me up lmao. But now that I think about it, I think that maybe once he hit that stupid thing he recollected the pieces of info he needed in his mind to realize Max wasnt dead! Remember how at the beginning hes trippin hearing the phone and seeing the dead bodies and remembering how Max was acting shady the night of the prohibition funeral. That smile is Noodles being ahead of the game, while Max thinks he os
In 2011 in Cannes a 'rebuld' of the directors cut was shown. It was 4,5 hours with scenes that where never shown before. I saw the Europe version of nearly 4 hours in 1984 in a theater and have the 'uncut' (or should I say unmolested) version. Anyway, I'm waiting for a release of the recent 2011 version ever since. Where can I get it? And please folks, stop comparing it with The Godfather. This are two different master pieces that bring a lot of different emotions. Go compare Pepsi with Coke if you like.
The restored, 251 minute version is going to be released on September 30th. 2014. It contains 22 min of cut scenes that were not on the 2011 blu-ray; 229, minute version. It seems for now, this is as close as we'll get to seeing the original 269 "unmolested" version of the film.
This film is masterfully done and you will never see a film like it again. Not just the plot, but the acting, direction, sets, themes, emotion and just sheer brilliance of the film. Movies today just don't compare, and that is what I meant by you won't see a film like this again. Obviously there are some good movies in the modern era of cinema, but I genuinely think nowadays is the worst it has ever been for cinema, I have yet to see a film really blow me away like this and other classics did.
I think you have to live a life of neglect, lost love, loyalty and love..most of all humility. this film I've seen several times the American version, it's time I read the book if it's out there, Robert DeNero broke my heart with his acting, I loved it backed with Debra's theme it hit my heart and soul with memories only I could feel.
FINALLY, DE NIRO SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT MR. LEONE!! Why he never talk much about Leone on interviews?? That's the official first interview that i saw him talkin' about Sergio. Anyway, Once Upon a Time In America gotta be my favorite film of all time. It's too perfect! I mean, Robert De Niro, James Woods, Joe Pesci, William Forsythe, Danny Aiello, Jennifer Connelly, James Russo, Tuesday Weld, Burt Young, Treat Williams...what else you can ask for??
Once Upon a Time in America is one of my favorite movies. It is a true story about life and trusting people. I think Robert DeNiro wasted his whole life mourning the loss of his best friend because he was loyal and thought he was responsible for his death. He was a true friend then in the end he was very blindsighted for 40 years to find out his best friend was not dead and took the love of his life. and all his money. James Woods had been living a very wealthy lifestyle for years and Robert DeNiro lived a poor lifestyle. Love Robert DeNiro, James Woods and lady who played both men's love interest. I love the theme yesterday it is so appropriate.
But the ending also has this moral conclusion that everything you do, will one day or another come back at you. Max has it all, but in the end he lost it all: his soul, dignity and selfrespect. Noodles instead walks away and lives on as a man, with no material wealth but his dignity and integrity intact.
It's definetly one of my favourite movies wouldn't want to just put it into one of the best gangstar movie genre because it's one of the best films you'll see no matter what genre you want to clasiffy it in.
OUATIA is better than both Godfather films. Yes I said it, it's my opinion. Respect it as I would respect yours. I think OUATIA is a Flawless Masterpiece. Come on its Sergio Leone and it was his last film, he went out with a Bang! One of the greatest directors to ever do it! I think all of his films also did critically very well. He doesn't have 1 bad film under his belt.
That is a very powerful, clear and succinct interpretation: "For every dreamer, there's a doer." This is a theme which appears throughout the movie. And under this idea, you can indeed say that Noodles' tragedy is his opium dreams. In other words, it is his addiction to unreality that keeps him from achieving Max's (albeit illegal) success. But I think the movie also frowns upon this kind of illicit action, because Max's crisis at the end is very real indeed.
once upon a time in america is de niro's best acting effort. i haven't seen many actors acting better than him. maybe al pacino in godfather 2 equalled him.
