Has Leone’s actual cut ever been released on home video? Just curious as I’ve only seen “extended cuts” that range into the running time of the Leone cut, but scenes were being restored as recently as 2012.
@@AirmanRugby6 Interesting question, Aaron. YES... the Long version is indeed Leone's cut. The American version cut the film down by over an hour, and re-edited it to where the scenes were chronological. What was marvelous about the original were the cuts back and forth in time, so you see how events of the past influenced the future. That long version is now readily available everywhere - I don't know that they're even selling that bastardized short version anywhere.
“You see, Mr. Secretary, I have a story also. A little simpler than yours. Many years ago I had a friend, a dear friend. I turned him in to save his life...but he was killed. But he wanted it that way. ..It was a great friendship. It went bad for him and it went bad for me too.”
The scene is a dream. Noodles betrayed and had his friends killed. The whole movie he’s in the opium den reminiscing of his past and dreaming of a life where he didn’t ruin everythiny
For me, Once Upon a Time in America, is one of the best films in the cinema's history and the best historic fresco of the America. Thank you Sergio Leone for this awesome film..
This film in my opinion was on a different level to other great films. It has an undefinable quality that is mostly lacking in other films . The deer hunter had it too. These are once in a lifetime films.
The CGI they used in the Irishman to make him look young. He still looked old in the parts that he was supposed to be young. He's pushing 80 if he isn't already so i guess it's kind of hard to make someone that old look young.
So captivated by this scene. Never has a flashback/flash forward sequence been shot so masterfully. And the music is just perfect. Movies need to use more Beatles instrumentals. Absolutely fantastic.
Something about this cover is a lot nicer with just the words "Suddenly..." and then the instrumental instead of the rest of the lyrics. I love this scene
Yes i know. I was checking the internet many times for the extended edition. I finally found and downloaded. I am sure it will be much better than the short version. 251 minutes but definitely worth watching !
i ove this movie as much as Godfather, but we have to remember he came 12 years later. The Godfather is a turning point in Gangster movie, " Once upon a time in america " is " juste " a masterpiece of this genre
Yeah, great movie. Wonderful scene. Loved how he flashbacks and the use of incomplete vocals on Yesterday, makes the viewer finish the lines and reinforce the subject matter. Really a cool scene.
@@linusaxelsson3940 So True. Words cannot explain the Calibre of this film.It sits up there alongside The Godfather. The soundtracks that run through it including the Beatles “Yesterday” however is what elevated it to a totally different level🙏🏿
In a beautiful film, this always starts me crying. It's such a heart hitting sequence. The years passing signified so economically. And with a Beatles song. Cinematic nirvana. Stop making movies, you've hit the top.
It's not a mafia movie non of them were made guys they was Jewish and Irish immigrants I think deniros character may of been Italian but it wasn't a mafia movie
Sergio Leone always said that his movies were almost like silent films and this scene proves it, very little words are said in this scene but it still manages to be very impactful by De Niro’s acting and Ennio Morricone score.
This film gives me a lump in the throat and makes my heart pound every time I watch it, that's just the physical changes, mentally this film takes me on a fucking trip every time. Sergio Leone was probably my biggest inspiration for going to University to study Film Production. Say what you will about the modern University system, I know it's not perfect, but it was this or join the Army for me. I just wish filmmakers made them like this today.
I have pressed the replay button so many times down the years to this scene, and still i'm amazed that i still get the chill running down my spine, the scene is impeccable, the music and setting pierce your heart. I try to hold back the first flow of tears, failed again. MAGNIFICENT
Yep. I have that on repeat for 6 minutes now. And I replayed it for about that when I first saw it 2 hours ago. I'm an editor, and realizing they didn't even have a digital editing tool these days just moved me to tears when it hit me, the work of art they've created and how gently and accurately they had to work to get to that emotional place we see on screen. I've never heard that song like this before and it's just mindblowing. Incredible. Just pure magic.
Very beautiful film by Sergio Leone. This is a very underrated masterpiece that should have more recognition... everything about this movie is perfect. The movie score by Ennio Morricone is... I don't have words to describe it's beauty... Though I do have a problem with the movie. The movie ends...
The only 4 hour movie I wish was even longer. I wanted to know more about Bugsy and whether or not they set him up which is why he wanted to kill them. And I want to know more about Pesci’s character and why there’s that mysterious scene where he’s spying on Noodles.
@@ajbahus well in the movie joe pesci character is stacking Robert De Niro character because Noodles and his gang were suppose to give him diamonds but did him dirty and killed everyone so...
@ajbahus Leone thought to make 6 hours of footage and divide in two parts (as Ford Coppola did with _The_ _Godfather_ in the 70s) but he ended making a 269 minutes version. The studio claimed to him cut it a little and he made the "European Cut".
Yes cannot understand why probably the best film I have seen in my 64 years. Closely followed by the deer hunter. When films are deeply emotional I think for many people it is lost on them. A masterpiece in my opinion
One of the greatest movies of the last 50 years with unparalleled actors and actresses at an age that gave the rolls not only believability but enabled each to personify their characters in a way rarely seen in films. A truly great script, great sets and fantastic soundtrack. What more can be said ? A MUST SEE !
Remember renting this out at my local video shop. Knew nothing about it but it blew me away, the story line, the acting ,the acting and especially the music. Though it was nearly 4 hours it didn't feel like it. Compare this masterpiece to movies of today and you see the difference.
I reckon the movie to be a glimpse of everyone's life. The scene brings tears to my eyes. Will all those moments be lost in time, like tears in the rain?
@@Gma00001 are you joking? Al Pacino is not on that level, he is definitely on the level or even the level above. He is without a doubt the greatest actor to ever live.
@@johncodee9175 that's not the reason why, it's because the American producers shortened the film and cut more than an hour and re edited it chronologically. It did pretty well in Europe. How can you understand it like that? People who saw the extended cut loved it enough with the elitism
In a way this film is as good as the Godfather. It is about deeply tied friends who are united through crime, born of poverty. In the same way, Godfather is about the survival of the family under the same circumstances of poverty. DeNiro and James Wood are spectacular her. Very underrated film.
I agree,I,me a very strong Beatle fan ,but this arrangement of yesterday surpasses it,the arrangement with the strings and no vocals is a by pass to the emotion, have tried the internet for full version but to no avail, the nearest I came to was matt munro,if anyone out there can steer me in the right direction please do.
The past and its pull of nostalgia is both somehow always with us and forever beyond our reach. A brilliant song and a brilliant movie working to demonstrate this bittersweet truth of our existence. A gorgeous scene. Amazingly, The Irishman has much of the same emotional power. Wow
***** 17 dollars would still be a good deal. A bus ticket from NYC to Buffalo now costs 55 dollars (Greyhound Lines). Of course not many people in the US travel by bus anymore, that's why it's expensive.
Such a great film u have to think what on earth the film studio was doin reducing the length of it so much ruining the film. Leone's true film is a masterpiece
I remember that everyone in the cinema startet whispering when the old Noodles appeared to "Yesterday".It was such an emotional moment and the mask work was extremely extraorinary for that time ( 1984 ) without animation by IT. Absolutely masterpiece!!!
I went into this film knowing it was almost 4 hours long. I wasn't sure I'd get too far into it before leaving the rest for another day. After this scene I watched the whole thing right through.
I only just finished it and even though I was forced to take a break in the middle, the whole thing only felt like a 90 minute movie. I was that engrossed
The singer is Douglas Meakin, originally from Liverpool, he moved to Italy in the ‘60 and had great success with a group called “The Motowns”. He then did an incredible career and worked with prominent Italian artists.he did several movies with Morricone. ( Meakin cooperated in at least 80 movies, wrote and sang many songs). A versatile Artist much loved from his colleagues and from the people. He is 79 years old and still rocks as he still holds concerts with the Superobots group, mainly in Rome, as he also did iconic anime’s songs in Italian. A living legend.
Real masterpiece full of magics of intersecting the past and the present to make the scenes more emotional and dramatic by using surreal sounds, not to mention Morricone's.
The BEATLES это революция.
Every year there are masterpieces, some of them being emotionally powerful. No movie for me ever matched once upon a time in america, but it's not everyday you see a film this great. But, who knows? A film released this year or next may turn out to be my new favorite. If there is still passion for filmmakingm there are still great films being made.
It's a great movie. I've watched it full only two times, recognizing every time how a masterpiece is. Sometimes I want to see it again, but it's not the running time but the emotional feel of sadness, joy and betrayal that take me in my inner hopes and fears. it's something about life, what you expect from friends and love and the disillusion, the loneliness of being estranged by the force of destiny. Very great and deep movie
Just imagine surving the Roaring 20's into the depression. You either survived or died. There were NO welfare programs, no federal support, you were on your own. Forget about going to the Department of Human Services it didn't exist. If you were poor you either found stable employment, hustled or relied on charity. If you couldn't make it, the last stop was the poor house, yes the poor house was an actual place. Its fun to fantasize being a part of that era but most people today wouldn't make it if they had the chance to go back.
beautiful scene and great transition piece..sergio always took his time with dialogue and movements... as noted before this is shot in the beginning and all we know is deniro ran away and is now back many years later as a broken man
when i heard this version of Yesterday I had literally a lump in my throat this is the best instrumental orchestra version that i heard sorry for my english
Robert deNiro is the best actor there ever was. He goes onto the platform as a young man, returns 30 years later as an old man. He watches into the mirror for 20 seconds, thinks about the old days and then goes to the car rental counter like an old man. Brilliant acting.
