Denis and Mencia seem to do the same thing. They yell and rant the jokes quickly so it seems like a stream of consciousness hoping you won't notice.

Leary's joke theft backfired on him, Hicks's legend has grown over time and he's influenced scores of younger comics while Leary's stuff is almost forgotten. In a weird way his plagarism may have contributed to attracting more future fans to Bill's original routines. Either way he knows what he did and can never live it down. Sad.

It's so cringey when you see the real comedian do it first then see the lame attempt from the one stealing. I bet every great comedian had someone like Dennis that ripped them off.

Supposedly Leary had a rule in Boston during the 70's and 80's; the joke wasnt officially yours unless you told it on TV. Hicks is the most well known comic he stole from, but guaranteed there were a hundred others that he took jokes off of as well. Also when Comedy Central roasted Leary awhile back, there were atleast two jokes that referenced him ripping off Hicks that Leary wouldn't allow in the show itself. Dude was/is spineless and a thief.

Louis CK also accused Leary of stealing.

Denis Leary lifted segments of Bill Hicks act, re-worded it and perfomed it at a faster tempo which led to people referring to him as Bill Hicks on speed. Material such as "jim fix, cigerette warnings, and heavy metal records backwards are just a few examples of entire segments he lifted from Bill Hicks act - he simply re-worded it. He also lifted the mock shooting of himself at the end of his show directly from Bill Hicks shows aswell as hick's "famous people dying" segment. I remember a few years ago a few friends came round to my house for a meal. Afterwards we sat down and played xbox. We got into a discussion and they happened to mention by pure chance Denis Leary's stand up show called "no cure for cancer". When i told them that Denis Leary had stole alot of stuff off Bill Hicks they wouldn't believe me. So i started playing them my private collection of Bill Hicks stand up dvds and bootleg vhs tapes and i skipped to the parts that i knew Leary had stole. Being die hard Denis Leary fans they knew his material off by heart. When they saw Bill Hicks performing Learys act they thought the shows must have been done afterwards. I then showed them the exact dates the Hicks shows were performed as its written on the inside sleeve of the dvds and bootleg vhs tapes that i own. I proved to them that Hicks shows were done years before Learys. They were forced to admit i was right. (Grudgingly).

Just recently, I was considering giving Dennis Leary some time as I didn't really care for him and his show when I was younger, but I am glad I am seeing this first.. I might give Rescue Me a shot but I will keep in mind where he came from and how disappointing this is

in all honesty, I grew up in the 80's when Leary rose to fame. I loved his stuff and he became one of my favorite comics. I'd never heard of Bill Hicks. Moved to Germany in 1990 and missed out on all of the American comedy scene until '04 and didn't pay much attention after that. Cut to today and I'm learning about this for the first time. Heartbreaking.

Man, what a great ending to his set that was. And of course Hicks was playing big venues in the UK first, before America, that makes so much sense somehow. Actually, that's probably the first time I heard/saw his name: reading the liner notes to Radiohead's album "The Bends", which is dedicated to him

Denis was always going to be the bigger comedian in the 90s, the jokes similar or stolen are funny to two different types of people and Leary's concept was clearly what sold in that era.

We have known about leary steaking from hicks for years. This video was published in 2018. While I don't put it on the same caliber as Leary and Hicks, I still can't help but feel like this concept was stolen from lots of other videos and blogs.

It is strange from my perspective. Being in Scotland as a teenager in the early 90s Denis was bigger in the imagination with the MTV skits etc. That said I have found really old footage of DL from 1984 and he isn’t like that at all. He came across as a sort of nice kid (he did smoke through it) who was warmly funny with the odd genius line rather than a trailblazing social satirist. It is sad that they fell out so close to Hicks illness and death.
