@@jonsnow5518 He made his career off being a prick, trashing on America and flying a flag while doing so. Thumbs up for making the poster from 7 years ago have to click on this video, dig down and find what they said :P
Watching Leary's dumbfounded expression afterward, it felt like the rhetorical equivalent of the sword being spun right out of his hand before he realized what'd happened.
@@tejasnair3399 you wouldn't expect a joke thief would have the balls to try and rip a guy for writing jokes. That is definitely a definition of irony buddy there are several.
@@ARCoventry Leary doesn’t understand the concept of writing jokes. He just steals them. Just see how much he stole from Bill Hicks. Plus the I’m an Asshole bit from Louis C.K.. You can tell Greg (like all comedians), already knows the thief stories and doesn’t like Leary.
When Greg says "Maybe there's a nonviolent way to solve the problem" he's CLEARLY setting up a bit. But then oblivious Leary interrupts like it's a serious political discussion! As a comic he should have see that and not stepped on the joke.
One thing we have to acknowledge; Dennis commented on this moment in the documentary honoring Greg. He flat out said that he "looked like a real asshole" in that moment and was very complimentary towards Giraldo. Gotta give the guy props for owning it after the fact and eating some humble pie.
He had no other choice he knew he looked bad plus he looked like one of those comedians who thought since they made it they had to be treated like royalty while they bullied everyone else
Oh man. I remember being in high school and watching this in the darkened living room of my childhood home when it first aired. It was the moment Greg Giraldo, for me, transformed from a comedian I really liked to a kind of a personal hero- standing up to the loud mouthed bully who talks shit, but can't back it up. Giraldo's death was one of the very few celebrity deaths that personally affected me and I just want to say RIP Greg. We miss you.
+Ron Respect bro; same here. Greg would have gone the distance too. He may not have had the fame that a lot of the shills (Leary... for example) get from following the "hollywood formula", but he had the respect of the comedy world. Not a lot of people knew about Greg Giraldo (comparatively speaking, of course), but other comedians seemed to be in awe of his wit, preparation, and overall comedic talent. That says everything that need be said. A lot of people seem to think that since he didn't live some big, crazy, very public, reality-tv-worthy life that he doesn't deserve to be recognized as one of the greats. I would choose respect from my peers over attention from the masses any day. That man was a true talent. I wish he could be here to shit on all of the stupid stuff that has happened since he died, he would have a field day and we would all be better off for it. RIP Greg. We miss you.
Absolutely. He never got the attention that the "greats" got but his stuff was incredible. When he died it was all "insult comedian dies" but he really wasn't. He was an honest comedian. He was willing to call people on their shit regardless of how politically incorrect it was and I loved him for that. I miss Robin Williams but I miss Greg Giraldo more. If you only remember him from the Comedy Central "roasts" I highly encourage you to check out some of his other material, it will blow your mind.
Ron really well said. I had no idea he passed away. In fact I just found out about this guy today. I was watching Netflix the other night and I noticed Leary's No Cure For Cancer was on there. I hadn't watched it in years. I remember hearing that he was a huge rip off of bill hicks. Started to look into it and sure enough he was. This led me to this video today. Greg was such a bad ass in this. Really put Dennis in his place. Was awesome Very sad to hear he passed away
If you liked that...he also stole that "I'm an asshole" bit from Louis C.K. He didn't care cause he writes new material all the time. And this is like the best bit that leary has and even that is stolen.
He didn't even go nuclear! It's not like he attacked Leary. He just made a joke. I can't imagine how insecure you have to be to take that shit personally... on a comedy show.
Giraldo was the quickest wit in the game. By far the most under underappreciated comedian in years. He was the only reason I watched the roast on comedy central.
"That big Russian War." I will remember that forever. It is so sad that Greg had to leave and stick us with Denis Leary. Greg was one of the best comedians ever. Leary is just a hack.
@Harry Snothead A vast amount of people dont have brains that comprehend at those speeds, those tend to be the same people that fail to understand that their are different kinds of people in the world; they tend to subject others to their own limited capabilities.
+jon Q lol well said. the thing is if Bill(rip best comic ever) had been sitting where Leary was, I don't think he would've been such a donkey raping shit eater about it. they're comedians for Christ sake. but obviously, G struck a nerve. this was my introduction to Giraldo. Leary must get tired of being called out by every comic with a conscience. The thing is Leary can't think on his feet! he takes shit personal then loses his fucking grip. goddamn thief.
Thanks for pointing that out, even though Its been common knowledge about the dude since before this show was new. I understand that people like to point out facts to feel smart, so I hope it worked.
That "that's kind of what we do here Denis, as a comedy writer" was frigging gold! Everything about it: the way he just sat there calmly, with the line in his mind, waiting for Leary to stfu with his babbling, delivered it calmly with perfect timing.
The irony is that Greg's response was improvised. There's no way he could've written that before the show and even if he had, that's his job (like he said).
Leary got so flustered he actually said “this guy writes so many jokes before the show it’s not even funny” like it was an insult. He’s such a d bag he forgot what a comedian is
+RedB Ben Too bad he's dead or he could represent both Louie CK and Bill Hicks while they collect all the money Leary made from stealing their fucking jokes. Leary is a fucking hack.
Michael Burke A bachelors from Columbia and a law degree from Harvard according to his wiki. If I remember his opening into stand up was actually meeting and representing Jeff Ross.
When Denis Leary said, "You're the guy in school that did all the homework and then asked if there was any more that needed to be done," Geraldo should have replied by saying, "and you're the kid who never did his own homework, you just copied Bill Hicks'"
@@CJW0056 But why did he take it so seriously, he just made a good point and we're here many years later, I have no idea when this was aired but its 2022, the us and North korea have had some issues but never been to war, even trump managed to meet Kim, Greg was 100% right, why did Denis take it so seriously
Ross is funny, but Giraldo was on another level. We freaking need him today, badly. Norm, Rickles, Rodney, Johnny, Sam, we need them all back to stop this sensitive nightmare era we’re living in.
@@brettbaratheon9776 it's nice to see there are others out there who feel the same as me.i couldn't agree more, R.I.P. legends and Americas sense of humor..
@@dimebagdave77 oh, brother, you’re not alone. I am quite sure you noticed that comedy has died. I’m almost 40 and I know our best days are behind us regarding comedy, free speech, I could go on. I was arguing with some softie the other day, I told him to watch Rickles during a Martin roast. Just so he could see that people of all walks of life used to have a sense of humor, laughed, and gave it back just as hard. You’d think kids grew up without proper parenting and teaching. It’s no shock we are where we are.
@@brettbaratheon9776 I'll give them this, it'll be real interesting to see what kind of insanity all this will lead too😆I took things for granted in the past, back then progressive meant being even more bold than the smartass that came before you.and the freakin horror movies RULED..
I always liked how Denis said, “you started it, I’ll finish it.” No. You started it. He finished it. He bodied that Bill Hicks wannabe. That’s why Giraldo is a legend and Leary is just a self-involved sellout.
Powderfinger stardom didn't pass Giraldo...he's a legend...#1 roaster of all time next to Jeff Ross and all Giraldo's stand up specials were BADASS too
I love the look on Giraldo's face...he had that comeback ready. You could see he was just waiting for the quiet before he induced the storm! lol Love that guy, and the comedy world misses him badly. I don't think the comedy world even noticed when Leary was gone from it.
Dennis bit off way more than he could chew against of the most clever comedians that has ever graced comedy. I'm thinking the last thing anyone would ever want to do against the late, great, Greg Giraldo was have a battle of wits with him.
fuck leary that worthless unfunny bill hicks rip-off copy cat parasite! rip giraldo, one of the fucking greats!!! he woulda fuckin' pounded leary into the ground with insult jokes like atomic bombs ...man i miss giraldo, mitch and patrice so fucking bad!!!
I love how Dennis says "let's go in" the guy has never been in the army or done any form of public service and says "let's go in" like war is no biggie
He's is the 90s early 2000s equivalent of modern right-wing comedians complaining about "cancel culture" when they slightly criticize for saying racist shit.
3:27-4:28 is the best part of this clip. I watched this show often when it aired in 2002-2004. I miss Greg. He deserved more recognition and success than he received. Respect to you, Mr. Greg Giraldo. You left this earth way too soon in 2010.
I forget who it was, but one of the cellar comics summed up this entire ordeal perfectly. Greg didn't even have to use the the nuclear stuff - the joke thievery. He was smart enough to riff circles around Leary.
The thing that really bugs me about this is that Greg was setting up a joke. Leary shit on his set up. Like what kinda comedian does that? Obviously there is a joke coming it's FUCKING COMEDY CENTRAL!
Interrupting jokes was kind of a hallmark of this show and one of the reasons I liked it so much. There's plenty of set-up punchline content out there. This show required strategy.
What's interesting about this is that Greg's "written" jokes that got the biggest laughs on the show, didn't get as big of a laugh as his improvised jokes! He didn't actually need to write anything. He could've just showed up one minute earlier and still be the funniest person on the show. RIP
At 3:38, Leary has this look on his face like "how did Greg flip this around on me." His expressions every time Greg says something funny are priceless.
Denis Leary deserved this every time he stepped in the spotlight. The man ripped off America's GREATEST Comedian, who unfortunately was censored and ultimately passed away from Cancer. Bill Hicks was the best...and always will be.
I put bill hicks alongside George Carlin, as they were both very wise, but as comedians ehh... When I watch their specials I hear more clapping than laughing.
I might come of like a douche here but on my oppinion Hicks never struck me as funny. It just feels like he has no punchlines just rants. Not saying he isn't talanted the number of people that love his comedy speaks for itself.
I just noticed how Colin put his leg up in between them on table, not that a leg would stop them in reality, but as a signal that the didn't want it to escalate anymore. What a great show.
Damn... Leary got stomped *hard*... and he had nothing... just a pissy little "did you ever have a show?" What a failure of a comedian. It's no wonder he bailed on stand up comedy as soon as he got big.
I still think No Cure for Cancer was complete genius, I laughed through the whole show. Why can't we love everyone and not pick sides? I find certain things funny with Giraldo and certain things funny with Denis. I am not going to hate one just because the other one said a better joke on a topic. Example I watched a stand up video with Kat Williams, though I wasn't amused I am not going to say I hate him and call him a failure. Look at it this way he has accomplished more then you have. You know who he is and no one knows who you are. How can you fail when still alive? Anyone can rebound if in the slums of life. My truth.. -Mark Merin
e3IZrZ or if a better comedian dies and you're able to steal part of his schtick to boost your own comedy routine. I found his specials to be funny, but there not completely made up of his material I've come to find/notice. You got a little overly philosophical there for a youtube comment defending Dennis Learly lol.
I saw his the entire vide of all the roasts he was ever in. Without a doubt, you could tell how smart and brilliant he truly was. Not to mention he was a lawyer. He was incredible in every sense of the word. He is and always will be missed 🙏🙏
Giraldo was trying to set up his Korean nail salon joke and Leary f'd it up by getting all serious. The "Big Russian War " was a brilliant & witty comeback.
If Denis Leary knew history or thought a little bit harder about Giraldo's comeback, he could have said, "Oh, you mean that Big War where millions of people were bombed or shot up in proxy wars?" Giraldo was trying to set up a joke, but I don't think Denis knew that.
I watched this live and was a huge Denis Leary fan at the time. Denis was a GIANT and it felt like he was giving to charity by appearing on a Comedy Central show that came on at 11:30. Not to sound condescending, but it was kind of a big deal that he was on Colin's little show. (BTW, I loved Tough Crowd and CQ), and this was appointment television. What happened next was a comedy disemboweling we have never seen since. When it was clear Denis came in to perform off-the-cuff and was willing to survive off wit alone (which I did think he had clever moments), Greg went in for the kill. Leary was no match for a smarter and more prepped Giraldo. Greg allowed Denis to stumble over his own feet and executed him standing. This is brutal, and hilarious, to watch.
I just love how Giraldo is IMMEDIATELY ready to fire back whenever Leary makes a comment- dude has the look in his eyes of a prizefighter who knows he's about to land a knockout.
