DX Galaxymega! DX ギャラクシーメガ
Megaranger was basically a turning point in Super Sentai. After only a handful of episodes, the series was moved from an evening timeslot to the current Sunday Morning slot. So out with that tradition, why not ask "Hey, who says each character needs their own mecha anyway?". OK, maybe that wasn't the real thought process...but what we got was this two-piece robot: Galaxymega!
Galaxymega is the first primary Sentai mecha since Chodenshi Biorobo to be made up of only two pieces. Likewise, it also has a blue color scheme reminiscent of Daidenjin from Denshi Sentai Denjiman. Are you seeing the theme here? Denshi Sentai Denjiman...Chodenshi Bioman...Denji Sentai Megaranger. Galaxymega is retro indeed.
The two pieces that make up Galaxymega are...
1. Megaship
2. Megashuttle
1. メガシップ
2. メガシャトル
Likewise, you can form various combinations with the interchangeable pieces from Galaxymega. Powered Mega Ship (パワードメガシップ) is a combination of the components of the Booster Rifle (ブースターライフル) and the Mega Ship. There is also the Mega Shuttle Booster Mode (メガシャトルブースターモード) which was used to launch the Mega Shuttle into space.
Galaxymega also includes a few accessories. First we have the Mega Saber (メガサーベル) which was used in several different attacks. There is also the Booster Rifle (ブースターライフル) which was used as both the Boost component of the Mega Shuttle and as a Rifle. Lastly there is the Mega Shield (メガシールド) which is a large blue shield that attaches to the bottom of the Mega Ship when not in use.
Later in the series Galaxymega has the ability to combine with Delta Mega (デルタメガ) to form Super Galaxymega (スーパーギャラクシーメガ).
Galaxymega is certainly a toy that holds up very well. Despite it's somewhat plain appearance, it's still a hot collectible from Sentai past. At the time, however, there was pretty much an overload of Tech-based Sentai Mecha. It's biggest landmark has to be that it is the first primary Sentai mecha to feature electronics. Previous mecha to have electronics were limited to either sixth characters or special auxilary mecha.
Bandai America released it's own version of the Galaxymega for Power Rangers in Space as the Astro Megazord. Aside from some coloration differences, the Astro Megazord is basically the exact same toy as the Galaxymega. It even features the electronics. So if you're into the "white sword" and a much less condensed box, go ahead and check out the Astro Megazord. If you're into better quality and different paint, Galaxymega is for you.
